Error when compiling when using Hapijs

I am using hapi instead of express and I am getting the following error when compiling:

node_modules/webpack-hot-server-middleware/index.d.ts:1:32 - error TS2307: Cannot find module 'express'.

1 import { RequestHandler } from 'express';

The types explicitly import 'express' so you may have to require the module rather than import for now.

I've never used this middleware with hapi, how does it work, do you pass a custom requestHandler?
