Pull Reference Values in App Service Environment Variables Not Working #1155

Description

Summary

When using App Configuration references with App Service environment variables, the "Pull Reference Values" button is not refreshing the environment variables provided to the App Service. When you click the button, it does state:

This will query Key Vault and App Configuration to update any values referenced by the app. Your site will restart in order to apply the new configuration.

However, nothing indicates that the app was restarted and the environment variable values within the App Service remain the same. I also tried manually restarting the app service after pulling the reference values, but there was no change.

Steps to recreate:

  1. Use references to App Configuration in an App Service's environment variables. Example: @Microsoft.AppConfiguration(Endpoint=https://redacted.azconfig.io; Key=app:debug; Label=poc)
  2. Update a referenced value in App Configuration
  3. Navigate to the App Service's Environment Variables tab and choose "Pull Reference Values"
  4. Check activity log to see if app service has been restarted
  5. Observe environment variable values within the application and confirm no change

Hi Chase Martin (@chasestech) , can you please confirm if you are able to resolve any references from AppConfiguration? What value do you see in the environment variables for AppConfig references?
Also, is this a new issue, i.e., did refresh work previously?

Hi Avani Gupta (@avanigupta) when looking at the App Service's environment variables, I do see the reference to the App Configuration with a green checkmark indicating the App Service is able to reach App Configuration correctly. When debugging my App Service, I can also confirm that the environment variable is set to the value in App Configuration.

This is my first use of App Service with App Configuration, so I cannot tell you if this previously worked. I just expected it to based on the description of the "Pull Reference Values" button.

Thanks for confirming. I was able to do a quick test and here's what I observed:

    • "Pull Reference Values" button did not update my AppConfig reference values.
    • Manually restarting the app did update the AppConfig references after a few seconds.

It looks like the "Pull Reference Value" functionality may have an issue. And manually restarting the app should work. Please create a support ticket for App Service team to investigate this further.
