Bug :azure-ai-projects==1.2.0b1 will pointing to azure-ai-agents==1.1.0 latest version which is causing the Cannot import name "RequiredMcpToolCall" from "azure.ai.agents.models" #42381

Description

@UtkarshMishra-Microsoft

Describe the bug
Installing azure-ai-projects==1.0.0b11 or higher version and checked its pointing to azure-ai-agents==1.1.0.
The latest available beta version of azure-ai-agents is 1.2.0b1, which contains important fixes and new features such as updates to RequiredMcpToolCall.

  • Package Name: azure-ai-projects
  • Package Version: 1.0.0b11 or higher

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:
Create a clean Python virtual environment.

Run:

pip install azure-ai-projects==1.0.0b11
pip show azure-ai-agents

Observe that the installed version is azure-ai-agents==1.1.0, not the latest 1.2.0b1.

Expected behavior
azure-ai-projects should specify a flexible dependency range for azure-ai-agents (e.g., >=1.1.0) so that users automatically get the latest compatible version. This would ensure access to the most recent bug fixes and features without manual dependency overrides.

    UtkarshMishra-Microsoft , thank you for your feedback!! azure-ai-projects specifies dependency on azure-ai-agents in the following way:

    install_requires=[
    "isodate>=0.6.1",
    "azure-core>=1.30.0",
    "typing-extensions>=4.12.2",
    "azure-storage-blob>=12.15.0",
    "azure-ai-agents>=1.0.0",
    ],

    So it's up to the developer to decide which version of azure-ai-agents they want. It will use an existing installation of azure-ai-agents as long as its version is greater than 1.0.0 (stable or beta releases). It does not require a particular version. If there is a particular issue with installing azure-ai-agents version 1.1.0, then it should be addressed by fixing azure-ai-agents. Please open a separate GitHub issue on that.

    UtkarshMishra-Microsoft note that stable releases of azure-ai-agents (including 1.1.0) do not yet include the Agent MCP tools. Please install latest beta version of azure-ai-agents, since MCP is still a preview feature. So if you start with a clean environment, first install azure-ai-agents 1.2.0b1, then install azure-ai-projects (stable or latest beta).

    Note the changelog for 1.1.0b2 of azure-ai-projects: "File setup.py was updated to indicate the dependency azure-ai-agents>=1.2.0b3 instead of azure-ai-agents>=1.0.0. This means that in a clean environment, installing via pip install --pre azure-ai-projects will install latest beta version of azure-ai-agents (which has features in preview) instead of latest stable version (which does not include preview features)."
