Fixes #2050. Allows archive's root-containment guard to accept a direct child directory that is a project-owned symlink (e.g. openspec/changes -> shared docs repo), without weakening canonical checks for nested paths. Build and archive tests passed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Archiving now works when the managed changes directory is a symlink to a project-owned location, provided its path is within the OpenSpec root. The archived change is moved into that directory’s archive folder and removed from its original location. Symlinked archive directories that fail containment checks remain blocked.

📝 Walkthrough

ArchiveCommand.run checks textual containment before canonical path containment. If canonical containment fails, it permits changesDir and mainSpecsDir, but still rejects archiveDir. A POSIX-only test verifies archiving through a symlinked openspec/changes directory.

Changes: Archive path validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Managed path validation
src/core/archive.ts, test/core/archive.test.ts
ArchiveCommand.run rejects paths outside the OpenSpec root based on the textual check. If canonical containment fails, it permits changesDir and mainSpecsDir, but rejects archiveDir. A POSIX-only test checks that archiving through a symlinked openspec/changes directory places the archive in the target and removes the original change directory.

The archive behavior has two uncovered regression cases: archiving with a project-owned symlinked specs directory and rejecting escaping paths with native Windows separators. The implementation is not shown to fail, so the remaining merge risk is limited to protecting these behaviors with focused tests.

The project-owned symlink exception applied to every direct child, so openspec/changes/archive could point outside the root and archive succeeded. Limit that exception to the changes and specs directories.

The archive symlink exception treated every direct child as a project-owned link. openspec/changes/archive is a direct child of changes, so a symlink from that path to a directory outside the root was archived instead of rejected.

c1c9d0c limits the exception to the changes and specs directories themselves. openspec/changes can still be a symlink to a project-owned directory.

Docker node:22-bookworm, pnpm 10.34.5, vitest run test/core/archive.test.ts -t symlink: 15 passed, 253 skipped, exit 0. That set includes the outside-archive rejection and the new project-owned changes symlink case.

Add coverage for a project-owned openspec/specs symlink.

Removing the mainSpecsDir exception makes ArchiveCommand.run() reject a project-owned openspec/specs symlink before archive processing. The added test does not cover this path because it sets skipSpecs: true. The existing symlink test calls retireSpec directly and links within the project, so it does not detect this regression.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add required Windows-separator coverage.

test/core/archive.test.ts:623 skips this path test on Windows. The changed archive containment guard uses path.sep, so the test guidance requires coverage that exercises the native separator. Without it, a Unix-only regression can pass the test suite.

Thanks for digging into #2050 — and for spotting that the containment guard was the thing in the way. I reviewed this against #2052, which fixes the same issue, and I'm recommending we land #2052 instead. Two reasons, both of which I reproduced locally rather than read off the diff.

1. It doesn't fix #2050 for a change that carries spec deltas

With openspec/changes symlinked outside the repo and the change holding one specs/<cap>/spec.md delta — the reporter's layout, since theirs is a shared docs repo:

Applying changes to openspec/specs/linked-cap/spec.md:
  + 1 added
Specs updated successfully.
✖ Error: The archived delta for 'linked-cap' changed during the final move.

The same layout with --skip-specs succeeds. That's the flag the added test uses, which is why CI is green here.

The cause is at src/core/archive.ts:2225: path.join(archivePath, path.relative(changeDir, proposed.update.source)). update.source is canonical (symlinks resolved) while changeDir is still the symlinked path, so the relative path is garbage and the fingerprint check fails. #2052 fixes exactly this with a canonicalChangeDir. Good news is it rolls back cleanly — the change directory is intact, archive/ is empty, and the main spec isn't left written — so it's a hard failure rather than data loss.

2. The relaxation isn't bounded the way the description says

The body says it accepts "a direct child directory that is a project-owned symlink … without weakening canonical checks for nested paths." In the code at src/core/archive.ts:1387-1389:

const projectOwnedDirectory =
  managedDir === changesDir || managedDir === mainSpecsDir;

managedDir is the loop variable, so for the changes and specs entries that condition is tautologically true. The net effect is that canonical containment is skipped for those two paths entirely — there's no depth check, no symlink check, and nothing that establishes "project-owned." path.relative(root.path, changesDir) is always openspec/changes, two segments, so the directChild test in the first commit was never true for changes/specs and always true for archive; the second commit removed it rather than correcting it.

The textuallyInside block above it (13 lines) can't fire either: makeRoot (src/core/root-selection.ts:117-131) builds all three paths with path.join, so a lexical escape is structurally impossible.

Credit where it's due — the second commit does close the escaping-archive/ hole the first one opened, and that leg keeps the full check.

A question for the maintainers that outlives this PR

Both this and #2052 let openspec archive --yes write outside the repository with nothing on screen about it. git clone preserves symlinks, so a repo whose openspec/changes points at $HOME gets $HOME/archive/<date>-<name>/…, and a specs link writes <target>/<capability>/spec.md over whatever is there. main refuses this today.

Worth noting the codebase already treats this exact silence as the defect one level down, at src/core/specs-apply.ts:87-96:

the write was silent: the CLI reported the in-project path while writing somewhere else entirely … Name the real destination instead

and emits OpenSpecExternalSpecWrite. Neither PR extends that warning to a symlinked changes/specs root, which is the bigger case — in my run the CLI printed Applying changes to openspec/specs/linked-cap/spec.md while writing to a different filesystem location. That's a follow-up on whichever PR lands, not something to pin on you.

Closing in favor of #2052 — but the diagnosis here was right, and the escaping-archive/ catch in your second commit is a real contribution. Sorry for the duplicated effort; #2052 was open against the same issue.
