Stack 6/8. Depends on #176. Merge in order, retargeting to j5/main as predecessors land.

Full stack:

Testing: scripts/j5/pr-env.sh <pr> --peer (#255) serves this PR's build as two peered servers, Local and Remote. Rebased onto j5/main on 2026-09-30, after the Effect rc.115 upstream sync and the Playbooks and Crews migrations landed; peer migrations are now 023–027 and the FORK.md case is 48. A test state directory that ran an earlier cut of this stack recorded the peer tables under other ids, so rerun pr-env.sh with --fresh for such environments.

Stack 5 of the cross-server peering build, the last. Base: #176 (return path). Builds cross-device AC12, AC14, and AC15 on the client side.

Problem

Peering existed only as routes and a CLI. The definition says the client, which alone is connected to both servers with administrative scope, performs the introduction.

What this adds

  • Peer servers section in Settings → Connections (web and desktop), shown under the same access:write gate as pairing links and sessions. It lists this server's recorded peers with their origin and a Remove action that confirms first and also revokes the credential the peer held here.
  • "Peer with…" dialog. Choose another connected environment. Both origins default to what this client uses, each with a loopback warning, because the address that works for the laptop is not the one two servers use between themselves. Labels default to the environment names. The Peer button is disabled with a stated reason until the other environment is connected, this client's session there can manage access, and both origins are valid.
  • Mutual introduction in one act. introducePeers in client-runtime issues a credential on each side for the other, then records each side on the other, proving the credential at the origin. It stops at the first failure and reports every step as done, failed, or skipped, so the person sees exactly what stands and can retry.
  • Client helpers in client-runtime (j5/http.ts, j5/state.ts, new j5/peering.ts subpath) so mobile can reuse them.

Surfaces

  • Web and desktop: this PR.
  • Mobile: not supported here yet. Mobile has no Connections management surface for pairing links either; the helpers are in client-runtime for when it does.
  • CLI: j5 a2a peer from stack 1 remains the headless path.

Upstream touch

One mount in ConnectionsSettings.tsx, recorded in FORK.md case 36. Nothing else in the file changes. The lint warning at line 2096 of that file is pre-existing memoization advice unrelated to this change.

Verification

peering.test.ts covers the origin default, the loopback warning, readiness, and the four-step sequencing with a failure mid-way. http.test.ts gains a case driving all four peer routes with each server's own credential and one surfacing a peer refusal code. tsgo --noEmit clean for apps/web and packages/client-runtime. vp lint clean on the new files. Not exercised in a browser; I did not launch a dev server for this.

After the 2026-09-30 rebase: the Add peer header action uses main's ghost-muted button variant, as Add environment does, to satisfy main's Button no-restyle lint rule.

Astra review (2026-09-20): two judgment calls, neither changed in code.

  • A failed introduction leaves the steps that succeeded standing (a credential issued, a peer recorded). The dialog reports each step, and re-running it is the recovery: issuing again rotates the old credential out, and re-adding a known peer rotates its origin and credential. That is deliberate; cleanup on failure would make a transient network error undo a half-finished pairing the person may want to keep.
  • The upstream-edit list in FORK.md case 36 now names every touched file, including this package's ./j5/peering exports entry and the already-J5-modified registration.test.ts, and describes the runtime-layer wiring as it is after feat(a2a): deliver to agents homed on peer servers #175.

The Connections integration is small and the step-by-step outcome reporting is nice, but removal and re-peering need work before this is safe to use, and a few surfaces are missing.

Should fix

  • PeerServersSettings.tsx: the "Remove peer" confirm falls back to true when no confirm host is mounted. (inline)
  • PeerIntroductionDialog.tsx: the dialog never resets on close, so reopening "Add peer" shows the last run. (inline)
  • PeerServersSettings.tsx: removal is one-sided, but the confirm text says both servers stop messaging each other. (inline)
  • packages/client-runtime/src/j5/peering.ts: re-peering a pair that's already peered rotates the old credential out before the new one is recorded, and nothing is rolled back when a step fails. (inline)
  • Surfaces: the section only renders when primaryEnvironmentId != null, so hosted app.t3.codes or any client without a local backend can't peer two remote environments, even though AC14 and the runbook say "from a client connected to both environments". There's no mobile surface and no recorded "not supported on mobile" decision. There's also no docs/user/ entry, only the operations runbook. I'd either support these or write down the decision.

Nits

  • peering.ts: run returns Promise<unknown>, which forces the as { credential: string } casts. Making it generic (<A>(step, action: () => Promise<A>) => Promise<A>) removes them. PeeringSide.environmentId is string, which forces the as EnvironmentId casts in the dialog; typing it EnvironmentId fixes that. (inline)
  • PeerIntroductionDialog.tsx: the local/remote PeeringSide objects get built twice with slightly different fallbacks; I'd build them once. When no remote is chosen, the otherId ?? primaryEnvironmentId session subscription is harmless but misleading. (inline)

The fork touches are minimal (one import and mount in ConnectionsSettings.tsx, one ./j5/peering export in client-runtime) and they're recorded in FORK.md case 40.

`Remove ${peer.label} as a peer? Agents on the two servers will no longer be able to message each other, and the credential ${peer.label} holds for this server is revoked.`,

{ confirmLabel: "Remove peer" },

When no confirm host is mounted, requestConfirmDialog returns nothing, and this falls back to true, so the peer gets removed and its credential revoked without asking. For a destructive action I'd fail closed with ?? Promise.resolve(false), which is what FleetPage, ArtifactsPage and the upstream Sidebar already do.

This only removes the record on this server. The other server keeps its record and its live peer:<us> session, keeps reading our roster, and keeps sending messages we then reject and alarm on. That contradicts "Agents on the two servers will no longer be able to message each other." When this client is connected to the other environment with access:write, I'd call removePeer there too, mirroring introducePeers. When it isn't, the confirm and the result should say the other side still has to be removed on that server.

The dialog stays mounted and none of this state resets on close. After a successful peering, opening "Add peer" again shows the previous remote, any edited origins and labels, and the old "Done" step list. I'd reset the state when onOpenChange(false) fires, or key the dialog on an open counter in PeerServersSettings so each open starts fresh.

Re-peering a pair that's already peered breaks the existing link if any later step fails. issue-local rotates and revokes the credential the remote currently holds (PeerHttp revokes sessions for that subject on issue), and the remote only gets the replacement at record-remote. If issue-remote or record-remote fails, remote-to-local delivery is dead. More generally, a failure leaves issued credentials in Connections and possibly one side recorded. The failure is reported, so it isn't silent, but nothing gets cleaned up. I'd issue a fresh credential without revoking, record both sides, and only then revoke older sessions for the subject. Failing that, revoke the credentials this run issued when a step fails, and say so in the dialog.

Since #173 (2593545) issuing revokes nothing: a server retires a peer's older sessions only when the peer first presents the newer credential at record time. So re-peering an already peered pair leaves the existing link working if a later step fails. What a failed run leaves is at most an issued, unused credential; the dialog now says so (dfad144) and points at Connections, where it is listed and can be revoked.

Nit: because run returns Promise<unknown>, the callers below need as { credential: string } casts. const run = async <A>(step: PeeringStep, action: () => Promise<A>): Promise<A> infers the types and removes the casts. The same goes for PeeringSide.environmentId: string on line 13: typing it EnvironmentId removes the as EnvironmentId casts in PeerIntroductionDialog.tsx.

Nit: this rebuilds local/remote after peer() already built them, with slightly different fallbacks ("this server" here vs. the environment id there). I'd build them once and use them in both places so the preview and the actual request can't drift. Separately, the otherId ?? primaryEnvironmentId subscription on line 69 is harmless, but it reads as if it means something when no remote is chosen.

Done in dfad144: the two sides are built once and used for both the titles and the request; the subscription has a comment saying why it takes the primary id until a remote is chosen.

Peering existed only as routes and a CLI. The client is the one party
connected to both servers with administrative scope, so the introduction
belongs in the client.

Adds a Peer servers section to Settings → Connections on web and desktop,
shown when the connection to this server can manage access. It lists the
recorded peers with remove, and a "Peer with…" dialog picks another
connected environment, offers each server's origin as a starting point
with a loopback warning, lets the person confirm the address each server
will actually use, and then runs the mutual introduction: a credential
issued on each side for the other, and each side recording the other
after proving the credential at its origin. The steps are reported one
by one, so a failure shows exactly what stands. The client helpers live
in client-runtime so mobile can reuse them; mobile has no surface for
this yet.

… server

The dialog read as an undifferentiated list of four fields. It now names
this server up top, takes the remote server beside it, and shows two
mirrored columns: this server's address on the remote and its name
there, and the remote's address here and its name here. The columns
stack when the dialog is narrow. Requested by Jackson while testing
two servers on one host.

"Peer with…" read as a truncated label next to "Add environment". Use the
same verb form as its neighbour; the dialog title still says what it does.

…start every introduction fresh

Review of #177. Removing a peer used to delete only this server's record
while the other server kept its record and live session, contradicting
the confirm text. When this client is connected to the other server with
access:write, removal now runs there too, as the introduction did; when
it is not, the confirm and any failure say the other server still lists
this one. The confirm fails closed when no dialog host is mounted.

The introduction dialog is keyed per opening so a previous run's remote,
edits and step list never carry over, builds the two sides once for both
the step titles and the request, and, after a failed run, says what was
left behind: nothing undone, the existing peering intact, and at most an
issued credential listed under Connections. Peering sides carry a typed
environment id and the step runner is generic, so the casts go.

The product definition records that removal is mutual when it can be and
that peering is managed from web and desktop, not the mobile client.

…contract now requires

The registry review added credentialExpiresAt and inboundSession to
PeerRecord; the client-runtime peer-routes test still answered with
the older shape and failed to decode in CI.

Cancel was disabled during a run, but Escape, the backdrop and the
close button still closed the dialog. The run kept going and wrote its
per-step report into a dialog nobody could see, and the next Add peer
mounted a fresh one, losing the report and the recovery guidance.

…ironment does

Main's shadcn no-restyle lint rule forbids restyling a Button's
typography or color with classes. The peer-servers header action now
takes the ghost-muted variant that main's own Add environment action
uses, instead of overriding ghost with muted text classes.
