Separate connect-address from bind-address; add opencode drift check - #5
Conversation
BONSAI_HOST is the address llama-server BINDS (start-server.sh:39 passes it
to --host), but .env.example documented it as "host/IP of the llama-server"
with a tailnet IP as the example, and setup-opencode.sh used it to build a
CONNECT url. Those are different facts and cannot share a name:
- put a remote IP there and this machine tries to bind an address it does
not own. Measured: bind 100.x -> "Can't assign requested address"
- leave it unset with a remote client config in place and re-running
setup-opencode.sh rewrites a working remote target to 127.0.0.1
So clients now read BONSAI_SERVER_URL (where to connect, default this
machine) and BONSAI_SERVER_KEY (that server's key, default BONSAI_API_KEY).
BONSAI_HOST keeps its only real meaning: the bind address. BONSAI_HOST is
still honoured as a fallback for configs written before the split, except
0.0.0.0, which is a bind wildcard and never a connect target.
Also in setup-opencode.sh:
- --check compares the rendered config against .env, writes nothing, and
exits 1 on drift. This found real drift immediately: a config pointing
at one server carrying another server's key.
- the baseURL no longer hardcodes port 8080; it honours BONSAI_PORT, which
stack.sh, start-server.sh and the menu bar app all already do.
- context defaulted to 8192 while start-server.sh uses 32768 on macOS,
though .env.example says the two must match. Now mirrors the platform's
server launcher, and --check reports a context difference as a note
rather than a failure unless .env states BONSAI_CTX — a remote server's
context is not knowable from here.
- non-interactive runs take the localhost default instead of dying on EOF
from `read` under `set -e`.
- no hardcoded IPs remain in the script or in .env.example.
tests/test_opencode_config.py: 12 tests against a fixture .env and a
throwaway config dir, so the real .env and ~/.config are never touched.
Covers default-is-localhost, 0.0.0.0-is-not-a-connect-target, server url and
key precedence, port propagation, drift detection for url/key/context, and
that --check never writes.
42/42 tests green. shellcheck reports only the pre-existing SC1090.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Escape BONSAI_SERVER_URL before writing .env.
Line 73 writes terminal input as shell syntax. A reply that contains command substitution executes when Line 58 sources .env on a later run. This requires a user to enter or paste malicious input, so it is local same-user code execution.
Use Bash %q when persisting the value.

Resolve an SSH target when only BONSAI_SERVER_URL is configured.
When BONSAI_SERVER_URL is set but both key variables are absent, this block runs. The SSH command at Line 81 expands unset BONSAI_HOST. set -u then exits before the fallback prompt runs.
Derive the SSH host from BONSAI_SERVER_URL, or skip SSH and prompt when no legacy BONSAI_HOST exists. Add a URL-only, keyless configuration test.
