"Hello Sky" notebook

@drphilmarshall @SimonKrughoff and @kadrlica walked through some of the features of the JupyterLabDemo setup. It looks like we can create a "Hello Sky" tutorial based off of the existing demo notebooks.

Before you start

• Get add to github DM Stack Club org
• Direct your browser to https://jupyterlabdemo.lsst.codes
• Sign in with github (enter username and password)

Q: Why did it take so long
A: Starting up pod starts time

• Open terminal from launcher (change text size with Apple+)

• Change directories from terminal

• To open a new launcher go to File -> New Launcher

• Choose LSST Stack New Notebook

• Navigate to the new notebook that was created

• Click on left hand side vertical tab bar to start remove navigator

• Edit your notebook as you would normally

• Setup terminal environment

> cat /etc/motd
> source /opt/lsst/software/stack/loadLSST.bash
> setup lsst_distrib
> eups list afw

• Hotkeys are a question (emacs users).

• Editors that exist: vi, emacs,

• Command-W could be a problem for emacs users

• Can't provide atom or sublime

• There is a graphical editor on the launcher

• ~/notebooks is the home directory for your file browser

• File browser programs will be opened in the current file browser location

• Like having a mac with a Finder windown and terminal open at the same time.

• You can split screen by grabbing a tab and dragging it

• Where does shared data live in the jupyterlab demo?

• There is none yet...

• "Little House Button" takes you to the file browser home (~/notebook)

• Click on cluster.ipynb can get an image from the web

• notebook-demo is a git repo!

• make changes

• restart and clear outputs

> git checkout -b star-galaxy-axis-labels
> git commit -am "add axis labels"
> [git push....]

• Right click on a file on the left pane

• There is a download button to your local machine

• There is also an upload button

• bokeh-WIP (WIP = work in progress) for using bokeh as a plotter

• Can save a png to local machine directly

• We may want all stack club participants to be able to see each others home directories

• This would be a chmod dm-stack-club-users

• We need to find a small amount of data to get started from

• Simon suggests twinkles (currently being supported for the commissioning team)

• Phil is nervous that this might be to big for travis

• Much head scratching ensued

This issue has been addressed by the Firefly.ipynb. @drphilmarshall do we need to duplicate that notebook here?

We are trying not to duplicate sqre notebooks in the stack club.
