I've been thinking that an interesting crisis could be solar inhabitants. Scientists discover that there's something alive and responsive inside stars, where nothing can get at it, and depending on your own ethics you might befriend them (and trade minerals and stuff via special projects for something of theirs), destroy them (are novas a thing?) or maybe worship them (spiritualist?)
