Description

Fixes #17753.

The AutoDeploy import-discipline checker returned an empty violation list when an in-scope Python file could not be read or decoded. That made an inspection failure indistinguishable from a clean file. This change reports the read/decode error as a violation so the checker fails closed.

Test coverage

Adds a CPU-only regression test that makes Path.read_text() raise OSError and verifies _check_file() returns a diagnostic violation.

Checklist

  • Minimal checker behavior change
  • Regression test added
  • DCO sign-off included in commits

Dev Engineer Review

  • _check_file() now reports OSError and UnicodeDecodeError as diagnostic violations.
  • The violation uses line 1 and includes the underlying exception message.
  • The change preserves the existing import-discipline behavior for readable files.
  • No public or exported declarations changed.
  • No configuration or test-list files changed.
  • Verdict: sufficient.

QA Engineer Review

  • Added parameterized _check_file() coverage for OSError and UnicodeDecodeError.
  • Added parameterized main() coverage for unreadable AutoDeploy files.
  • The tests verify that read failures return a violation and exit status 1.
  • The modified test functions are not listed in tests/integration/test_lists/ based on the provided changes.
  • Verdict: sufficient.

Walkthrough

The AutoDeploy import checker now reports file read and decode failures as line-1 violations. CPU-only tests verify both failure types and their messages, including main returning status 1.

Add type annotations to both new functions.

The repository guideline requires annotations on every function. Add -> ModuleType to _load_module and tmp_path: Path with -> None to test_check_file_reports_read_errors.

As per coding guidelines: “Annotate every function.”

Cover the UnicodeDecodeError branch

Add a UnicodeDecodeError case to test_check_file_reports_read_errors. CI registration exists through unittest/scripts in l0_cpu.yml and l0_a10.yml. No manual QA registration exists.

Run pytest tests/unittest/.

Coverage verdict: insufficient until the decode-error case is added.

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.

Fail-closed behavior here matches how SyntaxError is already handled two lines down at [scripts/check_auto_deploy_imports.py:48](https://github.com/NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM/pull/17754/files#diff-897ac0011eb1bbf4882628e13cd16dc56a94303ab23e0824de5eaf089815a86fR48), and main() filters out paths outside AD_ROOT before calling _check_file, so the new violation can't fire for out-of-scope files pre-commit passes in. Description matches the diff; no docs or release-note surface (internal pre-commit hook), so nothing owed there.

Two test-side follow-ups in the inline comments; neither blocks merge.

Closing as obsolete after #19028 removed AutoDeploy from TensorRT-LLM, including scripts/check_auto_deploy_imports.py. The target checker no longer exists on current main, so this fix has no remaining code path to merge.
