…ansfers A survivable forward error must not free request resources while async work can still touch them: - _handle_errors waits for the model engine's input H2D copy before releasing anything on the non-fatal path, so the copy cannot read host page metadata that the frees rewrite in place. - A failed request whose KV blocks an unpinned transfer still reads or writes (a generation-side receive, a pipelined chunk before the final send) keeps its blocks until the transfer completes: the failure is parked and applied by a sweep that runs after the disagg polls and before scheduling can reuse the blocks. - _terminate_request defers the free whenever the async transfer manager still holds a claim (previously only with KV manager V2 under a connector); the claim-release path re-enters _terminate_request, so freeing early also double-freed on the V1 transceiver path. Also wires tests/unittest/executor/test_forward_error_survival.py into l0_a10.yml (it was never collected by CI) and adds unit coverage for the new behavior. … paths The deferred-cleanup change made _handle_errors, _terminate_request and the parked-failure sweep read executor state that tests building PyExecutor shells via object.__new__ never set, failing sibling suites (test_disagg_inflight_cancel_gate, test_cache_transceiver_single_process) with AttributeError. Route every touch of the parked-failures dict through a lazy accessor and read the kv-manager/transceiver flags with getattr defaults, matching the existing tolerance for the connector and transfer manager in _terminate_request. Also pin has_inflight_transfer to False in the benchmark fill-gate harness: its requests model "waiting for KV" and "generating", but the bare Mock transceiver answered with a truthy Mock, which made the error path defer them as transfer-owned and broke the fail-fast contract the tests assert. @coderabbitai summary
Description
_forward_stepcatches a non-fatal forward exception, fails theaffected requests via
_handle_errors(which enqueues — or buffers, under attention DP — their error responses) and returns
None. But noexecutor loop checked for that
None: the next statement dereferencedbatch_outputs['logits'], crashed the event loop on every rank, andthe hang detector tore down the whole server. The client saw a
correct-looking error response while the engine died behind it.
Two layers of fix:
MultimodalModelMixin.validate_multimodal_request_datahook, called from
PyExecutor._validate_request, lets a model rejecta bad multimodal payload before it is ever scheduled (request-scoped
error, engine untouched). A forward-time failure is handled
batch-wide and fails every request scheduled alongside the bad one,
so anything a model would reject inside
forwardshould be rejectedhere instead.
Noneforward result. Theoverlap and non-overlap loops fall back to their empty-batch
bookkeeping for the iteration (the failed requests already got their
error responses), keeping rank-symmetric flush collectives in place;
the overlap loop also returns the dropped previous batch's pooled
timing events. The PP loop raises an explicit fatal instead of the
opaque
TypeError, since inter-PP peers cannot skip a microbatch inlockstep.
Reviewer note (attention DP): on a failed iteration the error
responses may sit in the attention-DP buffered-response path rather
than being enqueued directly; the survival path deliberately keeps the
per-iteration flush collectives running so those buffered responses
still drain symmetrically across ranks.
Also included (same root investigation): warn when the admitted decode
concurrency (
max_batch_size) sits far above the range covered bycaptured CUDA graphs — decode batches above the covered range run
eager, whose per-iteration latency is far higher than a graph replay,
so the extra concurrency can cost throughput instead of buying it
(measured ~5x output-throughput collapse at admitted ~86 vs covered
32). Without
enable_paddingthe covered range is the dense{1..n}prefix of the capture set, not the largest capture.
This refresh rebases the PR onto current main (the previous head
predated the
gather_context_logitsremoval and the KVCacheManagerV2Python-backend removal) and squashes the review-response commits; net
content is unchanged.
Test Coverage
tests/unittest/executor/test_forward_error_survival.py(new,synthetic,
cpu_only): loop-levelNonehandling for the overlap /non-overlap / PP loops, the
_validate_requestadmission call site, the mixin hook contract, and the previous-batch timing-event release.
tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_budget_split.py::TestGraphCaptureConcurrencyWarning(11 cases): warn/no-warn across padding modes, capture-set gaps,
warn-factor boundary, and real-vs-estimation builds.
