[https://nvbugs/6801229][fix] Fix NVFP4 gather test references and skip empty FP4 quantize launches - #19761
Conversation
WalkthroughThe FP4 and MXFP8 quantization entry points now return for nonpositive dimensions. The MoE test references add an FP32 NVFP4 quantizer and update gathered buffers and Rubin row handling. ChangesEmpty-dimension quantization guards

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winUse routing metadata for the output-validation mask.
The corrected gather loop accepts expanded index zero at any valid row. This mask still excludes that row unless it is row zero. If routing places expanded index zero later, the test does not compare its output and can pass despite an incorrect result for that row.
Build
valid_token_maskfromtile_idx_to_mn_limit, as the gather loop now does. Remove the unconditional row-zero override. As per path instructions, flag “missing, incorrect, overly weak, or non-observable assertions.”

…ize launches - Zero-initialize the CPU reference padding in the NVFP4 gather act-fusion and SiTU tests; uninitialized padding could poison the output scale. - Gather small-token reference rows by the tile mn_limit, including expanded index zero. - Use an FP32 reference for the Rubin ReLU2 epilogue. - Return early from invokeFP4Quantization and invokeMxFP8Quantization on empty inputs instead of launching a zero-size grid, which left a pending CUDA error for the next launch. …lackwell gather test The Relu2 reference fix was applied only to the Rubin variant. The Blackwell test is parameterized over the same [Swiglu, Relu2] set, so it kept computing c_ref in bfloat16 and quantizing with fp4_quantize, adding a rounding step the fused FP32 epilogue does not perform. A small population of elements then falls outside rtol=1e-4. Mirror the Rubin branch: request a float32 reference for Relu2 and quantize it with _nvfp4_quantize_fp32_ref. The test seeds no RNG, so the failure depends on the draw and surfaces as intermittent CI flakiness. Verified on GB200 (SM100) with a seed-injecting fixture: at seed 4 the unfixed test reports 66 passed / 6 failed with "Mismatch percentage is 0.050473 for rtol 0.000100", and the fixed test reports 72 passed. Both repeated twice with identical results. CI hit the same failure at 0.050049 on DGX_B200-PyTorch-9. Signed-off-by: Chulian Zhang <851104+zhangcl@users.noreply.github.com>

Description
Fixes intermittent NVFP4 gather failures in
test_cute_dsl_moe.pyon Rubin and an invalid empty launch in the FP4/MXFP8 quantize kernels.invokeFP4Quantization/invokeMxFP8Quantizationlaunched a zero-size grid for empty inputs, leaving a pending CUDA error that failed the next unrelated CUDA call. They now return early.Test Coverage
On Rubin: the affected NVFP4 gather tests pass in all runs with the test fix and fail without it.
test_cute_dsl_nvfp4_quantize_empty_input_rubinnow checks that no CUDA error is left pending.PR Checklist
Dev Engineer Review
invokeFP4QuantizationandinvokeMxFP8Quantizationnow return when a launch dimension is nonpositive. This avoids zero-size CUDA grid launches. Verify that callers expect a no-op for empty inputs and that positive-dimension inputs retain the existing launch behavior.QA Engineer Review
tests/unittest/_torch/thop/parallel/test_cute_dsl_moe.pyupdates NVFP4 gather references, corrects small-token valid-row selection, and adds an FP32 reference quantizer for the ReLU2 epilogue. It also adds an empty-input test that checks for a pending CUDA error.test_count_native_cutedsl_matches_legacy_sort_bitwise. The new NVFP4 tests are not listed in the supplied search results. The author reports that the affected gather tests pass in Rubin runs with the reference fixes, and that the empty-input test checks for a pending CUDA error. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up because the new tests are not listed.Per-File QA Perspective
cpp/tensorrt_llm/kernels/quantization.cu— Empty inputs with nonpositive batch or matrix dimensions now skip kernel launches in both quantization functions. Verify this no-op behavior and confirm positive-dimension inputs still launch as expected.tests/unittest/_torch/thop/parallel/test_cute_dsl_moe.py— Updates NVFP4 gather references and adds empty-input quantization coverage. The CI list contains a different test from this file; the new tests are not listed in the supplied search results.
