Do not pass SingleProcessGroup to torch.distributed collectives.
When a single-rank mapping is used inside a larger distributed job, cfg_group can be a SingleProcessGroup. pipeline.py passes it to dist.all_gather, which requires a real ProcessGroup; rank() and size() are not sufficient. This path can fail at runtime. Create a real one-rank process group for collective consumers, or bypass the collective when the mapped group has size one.

Not reachable, and the new behavior is the safer of the two. SingleProcessGroup is handed out only when no device mesh exists and the mapping has one rank. The CFG all-gather in pipeline.py runs with cfg_size >= 2, i.e. a multi-rank mapping, and a multi-rank VisualGen mapping always resolves its groups through the mesh (_group() in visual_gen/mapping.py). The cache's own one-rank Mapping never hands a group to a collective. Before this change a one-rank mapping inside a larger job got dist.group.WORLD, a real process group of the wrong size, so a collective on it would have run on the whole job; now it gets an object that fails at the call. The comment at this line now says so (9637e9b).

Leaving it on H100 only, on purpose: l0_h100.yml asks that tests without a Blackwell dependence run on Hopper to spare B200 capacity, and the cache lifecycle test has none (no attention kernel; only the paged pool and the two small ops, which are themselves listed on B200). test_kv_causal_attention.py, which does depend on the trtllm-gen cubins, runs on both.

Re the nitpick on empty shapes: added (3, 0) and (0, 4) to this shape matrix in 9637e9b. The op returns before launching when there are no rows or at most one column, so both are no-ops; all 198 resulting cases (dtypes × shifts) pass on B200.

Re the nitpick on the missing torch.cuda.synchronize() here and in test_extreme_shift: not needed. assert_close reads the tensors on the stream the op ran on, so ordering is guaranteed; the explicit synchronize in the other tests only serves to surface a kernel fault at the right line, which these two cases do not need. Leaving as is.

Check that empty inputs do not launch a kernel.
The (3, 0) and (0, 4) cases check the result against torch.roll, but they can still pass if the operation launches a zero-work CUDA kernel. Add an assertion that detects launches for these cases. This follows the PR objective that empty inputs must be no-ops without a kernel launch.

Deferring this one. What callers can rely on is that an empty input returns the right (empty) result without raising, and that is what these cases check. Whether a zero-work kernel is launched on the way is an implementation detail of the op's early return (rotateRowsOp.cpp: if (rows == 0 || cols <= 1) return;), not a property anyone depends on; pinning it would need a profiler hook in a unit test to guard a guarantee the interface does not make.

This replaces the single-thread sort over edge pages. Page arithmetic is shifts and masks; the op requires a power-of-two page size. The kernels live in kernels::causalLayout with their constants under constants::. The vocabulary is pages, slots, visible ranges and segments: "region" is now "private pages" throughout the kernel, the op and the cache, and the once-per-commit work is two named functions, writeStagedHomeSlots and writeFixedTailRefill. Signed-off-by: Igor Shovkun <ishovkun@nvidia.com>
Main moved the VisualGen attention backends to attention/backends and the Attention module to attention/attention.py; the cache's changes to the cuDNN and TRTLLM backends and to Attention follow them there, and the tests and the benchmark import the new paths. KVCacheManagerV2's lender hook on free runs inside _remove_kv_cache. Signed-off-by: Igor Shovkun <ishovkun@nvidia.com>

| ``seq_len`` is derived from ``q.shape[1]`` and overrides any caller value, | ||
| except with a ``kv_cache``: then the caller must pass it, as the number of | ||
| real tokens of this forward, because the rows may carry padding from the | ||
| sequence-parallel exchange and the backend writes this forward's K/V into | ||
| the cache. Only the caller knows where the real tokens end; a padding row | ||
| written as history would be attended by every later forward of the rollout. |

In the future, we may want to always respect seq_len if its passed (regardless of KV cache presence). But for now, let's keep it as-is.

Non-blocking: Maybe we can move this restriction to backend wrapper? Just in case we want to support unaligned page size in the future.

The power-of-two requirement is the cache’s own now, not a backend’s: the commit-time layout kernel (causal_layout_) computes page and slot with shifts and masks, and its op rejects other page sizes. Backends add their limits on top (trtllm-gen needs 32-token pages, cuDNN takes any power of two).

Same reasoning as above: the requirement comes from the cache’s commit-time layout kernel, not the backends, so it stays at construction. The comment here was out of date, fixed to say so.

Sorry I'm still learning from your code and design doc: IIUC, from your design doc, the 3 types of non-fully-visible pages:
- where the fixed region ends (evicted tokens can follow it) -- this doesn't need to count here as it's the same value for all blocks
- where the blocks window starts -- counts here. contributes to the additional tokens a block needs to hold in its private page
- where the block starts (also where the blocks window effectively ends) -- counts
Max possible value from 2 and 3 forms self._start_entries. Is that correct? If so, would it be better to name the variable as something like:
| # Staged tokens a block's private pages hold besides its own: at most two | |
| # partial pages of earlier blocks, where its window starts and where it starts. | |
| self._start_entries = 2 * (tpb - 1) | |
| # A block's private pages need to hold non-fixed tokens besides it's own staged tokens: | |
| # these type of tokens come from at most 2 pages: where the block's window starts and | |
| # where the block itself starts. | |
| self._nonfixed_private_entries = 2 * (tpb - 1) |

The 2 × (tpb − 1) bound is right, but it covers only tokens written by the same forward. Committed tokens on partial pages are copied once per commit instead, up to 3 × (tpb − 1) per block.
To make that split explicit, I coined two names for these regions in private pages and update both the code and the design doc:
- committed_private: copies of committed tokens, made at commit;
- current_private: copies of earlier blocks' tokens of the same forward, written every forward.

Agreed it read awkwardly.
…d_private and current_private A block's private pages hold copies of the tokens it attends to on its partial pages. Copies of committed tokens, made at commit, are committed_private; copies of earlier blocks' tokens of the same forward, written by every forward, are current_private. The kernel, op, cache, tests and comments use these two names in place of "pieces" and "extras". The power-of-two page size check says why: the commit-time layout kernel computes pages and slots with shifts and masks. Signed-off-by: Igor Shovkun <ishovkun@nvidia.com>

cudnn.py LGTM.
Token copying & paged attention is consistent with the API & doc. For cuDNN, input structure is flat Q + paged KV, so the flat KV needs to be copied to the KV cache before attention.

…aphs The paged K/V cache forward describes its graph with the same _CuDNNProblemShape as the dense forward: b is the number of causal blocks, s_q the causal block size, and the page table's geometry (num_pages, table_len, tokens_per_page, page_strides) rides in fields that a dense forward leaves at their defaults. Verify the reference window boundaries against the cache’s pinned-prefix and rolling-history semantics.Description
Autoregressive video models generate a few latent frames at a time. Every chunk
attends to a fixed prefix (the text prompt), a sliding window of finished frames
and itself, through several denoising forwards and one frame-causal "clean" forward
whose K/V become history. Finished frames never change, so their K/V should be
computed once and kept. VisualGen has no K/V cache today; this PR adds one, plus
the attention paths that read it. No model uses it yet; the first consumer is a
follow-up PR.
Cache.
CausalKVCacheManager(visual_gen/cache/kv_causal_cache.py) is asubclass of
KVCacheManagerV2, driven as one long-lived sequence:[fixed region | rolling history window | staged tokens], where the staged tokensare what forwards have written and not yet committed. The constructor owns the
pool (
pool_tokens);open()owns a rollout's geometry.layer, so eviction is one decision, not one per layer.
open(pin_tokens, window_tokens, max_staged_tokens, causal_block_sizes)starts arollout with its geometry inside the pool; the first
pin_tokenscommitted tokensbecome the fixed region and are never evicted. A geometry's kernel-facing tensors
are allocated the first time it is opened and kept at fixed addresses, so a graph
captured over it replays when it is opened again (a new resolution is a new
geometry on the same pool).
write_rangewrites K/V at a logical position;commit(n)turns thenstaged tokens into history and slides the window.Eviction is an in-place rotation of the page table on the device (new op
trtllm::rotate_rows_), not a reallocation. Commit runs entirely on the device:a layout kernel (
trtllm::causal_layout_) reads the table and rewrites everyper-block tensor in place, and one pool-to-pool copy (
trtllm::copy_kv_slots_)fills the private pages; no bytes cross from the host, no sync. The K/V pool and
the cache's device tensors are reused across forwards.
that run as one ragged batch over the same table, each with its own key count.
Block sizes are declared with the geometry (
causal_block_sizes).each causal block gets a few private pages at the end of its row holding the
visible slots of the up to three partly visible pages (fixed-region tail,
window-start page, earlier blocks' tokens in the block's start page), then the
block's own tokens. Both kernels read exactly the window in one launch, no mask,
no duplicated key: reading the page-aligned resident window instead deviates from
the fp32 exact-window reference by up to 0.006 (denoising) / 0.016 (clean pass);
this layout shows an observed 0.0002, at the scale of bf16 rounding. The layout
works for both backends because each block's new tokens stay the last keys of its
row, which trtllm-gen requires (it writes them itself right after the cached
length); cheaper layouts that end a row on prefix tokens work for cuDNN only.
rewritten in place at commit; device state survives
close()/open(). The hostkeeps a mirror of the table for host-addressed edits and never reads the GPU back;
commit itself uploads nothing. A captured
forward is keyed on the cache, the geometry, the real token count and the causal
block size besides tensor shapes; commits change device contents and reuse the
graph, so the staging offset and the commit count are never part of a key.
trtllm::scatter_kv_slots_, reads the sourceonce with any token/head stride (no copy for K/V sliced from a fused QKV
projection) and writes each token to one or two pool slots.
pool_tokens_for/pool_bytes_for(static) andpool_bytesgive the pool ageometry needs and the device memory it takes, before anything is built, so a
caller can size the pool for its largest geometry or against a memory budget. The pool asks V2 for no resume headroom (nothing is ever
suspended), and the figure includes the allocator's chunk rounding; a test
measures the real allocation with the driver's free-memory counter.
zero_valueszeroes V of a logical range. Edits throughwrite_range/zero_valuesto committed tokens also update the private copiesthe block rows read, so an edit takes effect on the next forward, not the next
commit.
with the K/V heads this rank holds).
Attention.
_run_paged): cuDNN paged SDPA over the per-block rows. Any power-of-twopage size.
_forward_with_kv_cache): trtllm-gen paged context kernel over the samerows; accepts separate q/k/v or one packed QKV tensor (no split copies). 32-token
pages only: every shipped paged context cubin is P32. Its attention metadata is
built once per (cache, geometry, blocking) and bound to the cache's own tensors
(the rows in the op's block-offset encoding, the per-block key counts), so like
cuDNN it needs no refresh between a commit and a graph replay.
seq_lenon the cache path is the global number of real query tokens of thisforward, before sequence sharding, and the caller must pass it. The Attention
module otherwise derives
seq_lenfromq.shape[1], which under Ulysses is onerank's shard and may carry padding rows the sharder added so the sequence splits
evenly. Without a cache those rows are attended and their outputs dropped; with a
cache the backend writes this forward's K/V into the cache, and a padding row
staged as history would be attended by every later forward of the rollout. The
tensor carries no marker of where the real tokens end; only the caller knows. So
the module keeps a caller-supplied
seq_lenwhen a cache is present, padding rowsare neither staged nor attended and come back zero, and after the clean pass the
caller commits the real count. The meaning matches the engine's attention
metadata:
seq_lensis this step's input tokens; the key count is a separate, growing quantity held in device tensors.
support_kv_cache(); theAttentionmodule and Ulysses refuse acache on any backend without support instead of silently dropping it through
**kwargs.seq_lenis passed through untouched; thecache path and grouped-query models use the per-tensor all-to-all (the fused path
stacks q/k/v and needs equal head counts). Async Ulysses refuses a cache.
attention/attention.py: the fused packed QK norm + RoPE wrapper passes therank-local head counts, so it runs under tensor parallelism with per-head norm
weights. Full-dim norm weights under TP raise.
KVCacheManagerV2._remove_kv_cache(request_id): the counterpart of_create_kv_cache. V2's request teardown and guard-page bail-outs call it, and sodoes the causal cache for its rollout sequence; a repeated call is a no-op.
device_mesh.py: a one-rankMappingmust not borrow adimension of the job-wide mesh). The cache hands
KVCacheManagerV2a one-rankMapping; without [None][fix] Keep a one-rank DeviceMeshTopology off the job-wide device mesh #20021, rank 1 under Ulysses with MPI disabled read pipelinerank 1 from the job's mesh.
Performance, B200, CUPTI with L2 flushed, bf16, 32 query / 8 K/V heads of 128,
1576 query tokens over 39,912 keys (prompt 512 + 96 frames of history, the
benchmark's default, + chunk; the model's window is 95 frames plus the chunk's own
frame), K/V write included. Error is max |out - fp32 exact-window reference|.
Commit is six launches and no host-to-device traffic (before the device-side layout: 12 launches and copies, 0.46 ms first to last kernel, 0.47 ms host wall).
For reference at the same geometry: one contiguous buffer + cuDNN dense 961 µs;
concatenating history per forward + dense 1040 µs.
