What this is

The modeling_v2 refactor: a target's forward is assembled from catalog ops whose contracts are executable, and routed through a target layer that separates what runs a step from what a model statically is. Proven end-to-end on two targets — gpt-oss-120b / sm_103 / tp1 and deepseek-r1-0528-nvfp4 / sm_103 / dep4.

It removes more than it adds, and the two models share no code beyond the catalog ops and one validate flag. There is deliberately no shared base class for a model's core, its targets, or its weight table: each is the model's own code, written to be read in isolation. An earlier revision of this branch had a Target base, a ModelWeights base and a two-call op binding layer; all three were dropped once they held nothing every model actually needed, and so that a future model is never constrained by an abstraction it did not ask for.

The pieces

Two-layer model: core and targets

The core (<Model><Parallelism>ModelingV2, e.g. DeepseekV3Dep4ModelingV2, deriving DecoderModel) is the static structure: the weight registry, the derived tables a forward reads (rope tables, MTP operands, per-rank padding), and the parallelism identity baked into the class name. It builds its targets once in post_load_weights — when the weights are real — and its forward does nothing but route: _select_target(md).forward(...).

A target (PrefillTarget, DecodeTarget) is one way of running a forward over the core's structure. It is a plain class: it holds the core by reference, takes the per-layer weight views it reads once in __init__ (a _LayerWeights row per decoder layer, built by _layer_views), projects the engine metadata onto the attention op's batch state in step_args(md), and runs one step in forward. Targets share no code — each is a hand-written specialization, not a branch inside a shared body.

Routing is num_contexts == 0: one host-side integer read, nothing else. A mixed batch goes to prefill, so prefill is the general case and decode the specialization that may assume it has no context rows. How many targets a core has and on what condition it picks between them is open — the phase today, but equally a batch-size bucket or a sequence-length regime.

A target also owns the opt-in step-contract probe (TRTLLM_MODELING_V2_VALIDATE): calling its own step_args projection is the check, so the metadata surface the probe guards cannot drift from the one the forward consumes. The accuracy gates turn it on through env_overrides, so it runs on the ranks, where the metadata is.

OpWrapper — executable catalog contracts

Every trtllm op a target calls is a catalog entry: an OpWrapper subclass that carries both the op and its contract. The torch-mirror modules are gone — __call__ dispatches to torch.ops.trtllm.* directly. An entry is a stateless callable:

  • __call__(...) — the certified surface and the hot path. Takes every argument explicitly and reads nothing off self, so what it computes is a pure function of its arguments. A claims gate enforces this.
  • reference(...) — what the op is supposed to compute, in plain torch.
  • is_valid(...) — raises on an input the op accepts but computes wrongly. Never on the way to the kernel; the test tree interposes it.
  • CELLS / ARCHS — the exact shapes, dtypes and SM the entry is proven at. A test drives every cell through __call__ and reference, through a validating() fixture that refuses a cell the entry never certified.

How close __call__ and reference have to be is the test's business: each entry's test carries a _compare with the band and its derivation, and the certifying fixture refuses to finish unless the entry's own reference was the one checked against. Nothing on the production path needs a tolerance, so the wrapper does not carry one.

A target passes the weights, the per-step batch state and the configuration scalars at every call site, so the call site shows exactly what the kernel receives:

for i, L in enumerate(self._layers):
    qkv = cublas_mm(x, L.qkv, L.qkv_bias)
    qkv = fused_qk_norm_rope(qkv, num_heads_q=heads_q, ..., position_ids=pos, ...)
    attn_out = thop_attention(q=qkv, output=attn_out, local_layer_idx=i,
                              attention_sinks=L.sinks, **step, **_CALL_CONSTANTS)
    o = cublas_mm(attn_out, L.o, L.o_bias)
    o, residual = flashinfer_fused_add_rmsnorm(o, residual, L.norm2, eps)
    ...

In-place ops return what they wrote, so every call site reads out = op(in) rather than hiding the output in an argument.

Weight table

Each model's weights.py is the one authoritative statement of what its parameters are. Each W row states a weight once: name, shape, checkpoint source, dtype, load-time transform, and the layers that carry it. The model's own table class runs three passes over it — declare (allocate the registry), manifest (map checkpoint keys to parameters), load (fill them) — with declare and manifest sharing a single "which parameters exist" decision, so they cannot disagree about a weight. deepseek's load is its own: multi-key rows, 0-dim scalars, and coverage asserted in both directions.

class GptOssWeights:
    WEIGHTS = (
        W("norm1", shape=lambda d: (d.hidden,), src="{p}.input_layernorm.weight"),
        W("qkv", shape=lambda d: (d.q_width + 2 * d.kv_width, d.hidden), src=...),
        ...
    )

The core builds the registry once in __init__ (self.w = MODEL_WEIGHTS.declare(MODEL_WEIGHTS.dims(self))); a target never touches the table or the checkpoint — it reads the realized weights off core.w. Each table was proven equivalent against the hand-written code before that code was deleted, with the transcription kept in the unit test.

MTP / speculative decoding

deepseek's multi-token-prediction module — layer 61 of the same checkpoint, live only under a speculative_config — is expressed in the same core/target shape as the trunk. Each target has a mtp_forward that runs the draft step over core._mtp, the layer-61 operands the core derives after load; the prefill target runs the context path, the decode target drops it.

MTPLayer is neither a core nor a target. It is a thin worker-facing router, held by a DraftModel container, that borrows the core's targets: its forward is core._select_target(attn_metadata).mtp_forward(...), re-evaluated per draft call because the worker rewrites attn_metadata in place between draft step 0 and steps 1+. The one thing it keeps is shared_head — the module's own output norm and head — because the worker calls that entry point directly and it reads no phase.

A production bug fixed along the way. The first-forward derivation that grows the rope table to the engine's resolved max_seq_len and fixes _cached_ctx used to hang off the validation-only probe, so a served engine never ran it. Under a speculative config this is load-bearing: the draft chain inflates max_seq_len past max_position_embeddings, and a too-short rope table is read out of bounds. It is now an unconditional _derive_first_step on the core.

Op ownership

Ops only one model calls live in an ops/ subtree under the owning model (deepseek 8, gpt_oss 3); 8 stay shared in catalog/ (the multi-model ops plus SiLU, the two collectives, and the generic NVFP4 GEMM).

Rebased onto main

The branch sits on top of #20077, the LLM-arg switch: the accuracy gates pass modeling_v2="require" to LLM, the targets are no longer registered in the zoo (route returns the class), and the TRTLLM_MODELING_V2_VALIDATE flag is the one environment switch left, reached through env_overrides.

Verification

All on 4×GB300 (sm_103), on the tip of this branch after the rebase:

Gate Result
every entry's cell test, 25 files, one process each all green, including both 4-rank collective matrices and the claims suite
gpt-oss-120b / tp1, gsm8k 89.46 (reference 90.30, one-sided tolerance)
deepseek-r1-0528-nvfp4 / dep4, gsm8k identity vs mtp3 paired 94.62 / 95.07 (reference 94.24), delta +0.45
deepseek mtp3 acceptance, modeling_v2=require 2.943
deepseek mtp3 acceptance, stock (modeling_v2=off) 3.033, measured this morning on the pre-rebase base; on the rebased tree the stock engine faults at autotuner warmup (cudaErrorIllegalAddress), and an unmodified origin/main checkout faults identically on the same node, so this is an upstream stock-path issue rather than this branch's -- tracked separately

The cell tests used to seed their operands from hash(cell.why), which Python salts per process, so a cell drew different operands on every run and fp4_quantize's tie-window bound tripped about one run in six; the seed is a CRC now and six consecutive full-file runs pass.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to cfc10

The MTP draft path may build generation metadata from the wrong head width. The MoE padding helpers no longer catch a mismatched row basis. The GPT-OSS path no longer rejects unsupported LoRA or speculative inputs. Resolve these before merging. Several test-reproducibility issues should also be addressed.

The why text claims swizzle-tile coverage, but the cell uses the linear layout.

The cell sets swizzled=False. _swizzle only runs when swizzled_layout is True. This cell therefore does not cross the 128-row swizzle tile. The only swizzled cell has 160 rows. Fix one of these:

  • Change the why text so it describes linear-layout prefill rows.
  • Set swizzled=True if the intent is to cover several 128-row swizzle tiles.

Neither matrix runs the MPI-session symbol that the certified dep4 target calls. Both rank bodies bind process_group=PG_BOXED. Every check therefore runs the _pg symbol. The entry docstrings name the MPI-session symbol (process_group=None) as the symbol "a dep4 serving world calls". The checks that ran that symbol were removed. A regression in the MPI-session path now passes both suites, and check_certified_cells certifies a different symbol from the one CELLS describes.

  • tests/unittest/_torch/modeling_v2/comm/_allgather_op_matrix.py#L948-L949: add an MPI-mode run with process_group unbound, at least for check_certified_cells and the cold-capture check. Alternatively, change the docs to state that only allgather_pg is certified.

568-638: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add focused tests for DeepseekV3Dep4Weights.load().

The current unit tests cover manifest declarations, MTP row selection, shapes, and dtypes, but they do not call load(). The new bidirectional coverage checks and multi-key loading path therefore lack focused tests. A wrong _offwindow_expert_keys() or _mtp_keys() result may only be detected by a full checkpoint load.

Add tests in tests/unittest/_torch/modeling_v2/test_modeling_v2_deepseek_weight_table.py with a tiny fake model and checkpoint. Use two layers, one dense layer, four experts, moe_ep_size=2, and set the fake core's mtp_layers value. Patch torch.cuda.empty_cache() and torch.cuda.synchronize() because load() calls both unconditionally on the CPU path. Stub the trtllm.block_scale_interleave operation used by the transforms.

Cover both MTP-disabled and MTP-enabled cases:

  1. A complete checkpoint loads successfully.
  2. Removing an in-window key raises AssertionError with checkpoint key missing.
  3. Adding an unexpected key raises the final checkpoint-coverage assertion.

Add a CPU test for the base ModelWeights.load coverage asserts.

The weight-table tests cover declare, manifest and dims. No test covers load. A regression in load can go unnoticed in these cases:

  • The missing-key assert breaks.
  • The shape or dtype assert breaks.
  • The leftover-key assert breaks.
  • expected_unconsumed is no longer subtracted.

Any of these can let a partially loaded model boot. Add a small test in tests/unittest/_torch/modeling_v2/test_modeling_v2_weight_table.py. Use a toy ModelWeights subclass with two W entries, a dict of CPU tensors as weights, and a fake model that has model.w and lm_head. Assert that the copy succeeds. Assert that a missing key, an extra key, and a wrong dtype each raise AssertionError. Monkeypatch torch.cuda.synchronize to a no-op, because the test has no GPU.

Add a test for the _check_step_contract gate and its error translation.

test_modeling_v2_target_layer.py covers phase_of and abstract-method enforcement. No unit test covers _check_step_contract. A regression can go unnoticed in three places:

  • The flag never clears.
  • The AttributeError is not translated to AssertionError.
  • The check runs when TRTLLM_MODELING_V2_VALIDATE is unset.

The only coverage today is the GB300 integration runs. Add a CPU-only test in test_modeling_v2_target_layer.py that uses monkeypatch.setenv(MODELING_V2_VALIDATE_ENV, "1") and a Concrete target whose step_args reads md.missing. Assert that pytest.raises(AssertionError, match="drifted") fires on the first call. Assert that a good metadata object clears _contract_pending. Do not run is_valid twice in certifying, and do not leave the double count in seen.

If a test uses both certifying and validating on the same entry, raw_call is wrapped twice. is_valid then runs twice. The harness still works, so the impact is low. The real gap is in the staleness check. certifying skips the generation check that validating performs, so a certified-cell run does not detect stale bindings. If the omission is intended, state it in the docstring. Otherwise, move the stale-generation check into a shared helper and call it from both wrappers.

Place the CPU-only test in the CPU test list.

This module is import-only and allocation-free. If it is intended for CPU-stage CI, add the cpu_only marker and register the file in l0_cpu.yml. The existing l0_b300.yml entry already provides CI selection, so the missing-coverage claim does not apply. Without the marker, CPU-stage collection ignores this file.

check is no longer measured, the guard check leaves the communicator usable, and
check_cuda_graph_captures_a_cold_first_call covers capture without prior
communicator warm-up. Remove stale claims that a later collective is poisoned or
that the communicator must exist before capture.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fix the deleted quantizer import in the GEMM test.

The documented directory workflow collects this file. The CI list also targets unittest/_torch/modeling_v2 and ignores only comm, not gemm. The stale import therefore fails collection before the GEMM tests run. The current l0_b300 bridge is waived, but direct and unwaived suite runs remain broken.

🟡 Minor · Base mtp_enabled on the checkpoint's MTP layers as well as spec_config. · weights.py:766

tensorrt_llm/_torch/_experimental/modeling_v2/models/deepseek_v3/r1_0528_nvfp4__sm_103__dep4/weights.py:766
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Base mtp_enabled on the checkpoint's MTP layers as well as spec_config.

dims sets mtp_enabled from spec_config is not None alone. _trunk_layers, _moe_layers, and _mtp_only then declare weights for layer num_layers. Consider a run where spec_config is set but the checkpoint has num_nextn_predict_layers == 0. In that case declare allocates parameters for a layer that does not exist, and load fails with checkpoint key missing: model.layers.{num_layers}....

The leftover helpers are also inconsistent. _mtp_keys and _offwindow_expert_keys use core.mtp_layers, which can be 0 or larger than 1. The table always assumes exactly one MTP layer. Gate the value on both conditions, spec_config is not None and num_nextn_predict_layers > 0. Alternatively, assert num_nextn_predict_layers == 1 when spec_config is set, so this case fails with a clear message.

Proposed fix

235-235: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a routing test for _select_target.

DecodeTarget.step_args hardcodes num_contexts=0 and num_ctx_tokens=0. That is only correct if _select_target sends every batch that has context rows to PrefillTarget. If the predicate is wrong, decode attention reads context rows as generation rows and returns wrong output without any error. The weight-table test does not cover this. The bounded search found no dispatch test.

Add a small CPU unit test in tests/unittest/_torch/modeling_v2/ (for example in test_modeling_v2_target_contract.py):

  • Build a GptOssTp1ModelingV2 with object.__new__ and set _prefill / _decode to sentinels.
  • Assert that num_contexts=0 selects _decode.
  • Assert that num_contexts=1 (context-only) and a mixed batch (num_contexts=1 with generation rows) select _prefill.

Per the tests/** instruction, include the test in l0_cpu.yml if it should run in CI.

As per path instructions: "For each new or materially changed observable behavior, determine whether this PR adds, updates, or clearly identifies an existing test that meaningfully exercises the change."

…to carry it

The deepseek target now states each weight once, as a W, like gpt_oss: a
75-line hand declaration block in the core's __init__ becomes one declare()
call, the hand-written _manifest goes, and __init__ loses the sixteen local
dims whose only reader was that block -- dims() derives them now, once.

W keeps its field count; two existing fields widen instead. `src` gains a
callable form `(d, i) -> [(key, index), ...]`, whose two old forms are special
cases: it exists for sources that are not a fixed template -- this rank's
expert window (the checkpoint key contains expert_offset), a prefix that
differs between layer families, and multi-key rows whose tensors feed one
transform together. `per_layer` becomes `layers`: ALL_LAYERS, None, or a
callable saying which layers carry the weight, because deepseek's dense and
MoE layers do not carry the same set. declare and manifest now share
_targets(), so they cannot disagree about whether a weight exists.

Two findings the table forced into the open:

The MTP module is layer 61. Eleven of its weights match a trunk layer's
exactly -- shape, key template, transform -- and the checkpoint names them
model.layers.61.*. The trunk entries now extend one layer when MTP is live,
and the mtp_* parameter keys become l61_*; only enorm/hnorm/eh/head_norm and
the bf16 expert family are the module's own.

The dense MLP and the shared expert share a parameter key and nothing else:
different intermediate width, different checkpoint prefix. Two table entries
over disjoint layer ranges, same name, rather than one entry pretending they
are one weight.

deepseek overrides load: multi-key rows hand their transform several tensors,
the 0-dim NVFP4 scalars reject `[:]`, lm_head is asserted whole (attention DP
replicates it), and coverage is asserted in both directions, with the expected
leftover -- this rank's off-window experts plus the MTP layers -- supplied
through the expected_unconsumed hook.

Proven before the hand-written code went: with both still present, the
generated manifest was compared against _manifest per key and per source, MTP
on and off, and declare against a transcription of the init block -- 12 passed
(SLURM 1081689), after which _manifest, its helpers and the comparison tests
were deleted together and the suite rerun green (1081889, 293 passed with the
two pre-existing comm failures). The declare transcriptions stay in the tests.

gpt_oss: per_layer=False becomes layers=None on two entries; its own dead
_manifest and the test that had proven it go the same way.

Not yet verified: both models' accuracy runs are in flight.

Signed-off-by: Fred Wei <20514172+WeiHaocheng@users.noreply.github.com>
The MTP module's forward carried the same `if tc:` / `if gen:` branch the trunk
had before its target split, and the same reason to lose it: MLA serves
context_only or generation_only, never mixed. Each target now carries its own
mtp_forward and binds the module's ops in its own __init__, from core._mtp,
under the same _mtp_-prefixed names on both.

DecodeTarget's copy binds 23 of the prefill side's 27 -- the context attention
instance, the kv_b projection and the two paged-KV helpers serve a path its
routing guarantees never runs -- and its body loses the context block, the
three per-call splits and the attn_ctx rebind: 118 lines against prefill's
174. Every draft step past the first in an engine forward takes this shorter
path.

MTPLayer stays, as the object the spec worker holds across calls, and shrinks
to the two things that are genuinely its own: shared_head with its norm --
that entry point is called directly by the worker and reads no phase -- and a
forward that is now one routing line. The routing runs per call, not per
engine forward, because the worker rewrites attn_metadata in place between
draft step 0 and step 1+: one engine step's N draft calls can cross from
prefill to decode, and each one asks _select_target again.

Both bodies were cut from the D2a source rather than retyped, with the same
statement-level tooling as the trunk split, and checked the same way: the
prefill op set equals D2a's bindings minus the head norm, decode's differs by
exactly the four context names, and each tc-elimination rewrite asserted a hit.

Verified on 4xGB300: modeling_v2 suite 293 passed with the two pre-existing
comm op-matrix failures unchanged; deepseek accuracy require leg 2 passed
(gsm8k 95.07, acceptance 2.912 -- the mtp3 case drives both targets'
mtp_forward, draft step 0 through prefill and steps 1+ through decode), stock
leg 1 passed (95.07, acceptance 3.018).

…re class name too

The same change deepseek's core already had: tp1 is not incidental to this
target -- every expert is local, the quantizer pads for a single rank's
operands, and there is no collective anywhere in its forward. A second
strategy over the same checkpoint would be a different core, so the name
carries the tag, matching the shell (ModelingV2GptOss120bSm103Tp1) and the
directory (gpt_oss_120b__sm_103__tp1).

Name-only; five references, one file.

3fafe99 committed the deepseek accuracy gate's SLURM script to the repo
root while fixing its exit-code handling. It is developer scaffolding -- the
in-tree gates are the tests it drives -- and does not belong in the package.

Signed-off-by: Fred Wei <20514172+WeiHaocheng@users.noreply.github.com>
The target split removed deepseek's phase branch by routing: DecodeTarget's
body lost `if tc:` because its routing guarantees no context rows. The prefill
side kept its body verbatim -- including the now always-true guard. A target is
not a second line of defence against its own routing: `phase_of` sends a batch
here exactly when num_contexts >= 1, so tc >= 1, and the guard goes, along
with the two `if tc else 0` expressions it justified. Both forward and
mtp_forward, since the draft step routes the same way per call.

`if gen:` stays in both, and is not a phase branch: prefill is the general
case -- context rows and possibly generation rows beside them -- so gen may be
zero, and that is batch composition, not routing.

Verified on 4xGB300: modeling_v2 suite 295 passed / 0 failed, deepseek gsm8k
identity 94.69 / mtp3 95.00 (reference 94.24), acceptance 2.954 against stock
2.998.

…he layer loop

The trunk forwards passed seven metadata projections to _mla_gen at every
layer -- sequence lengths, host lengths, the three KV-pool handles,
num_contexts -- values that cannot change within a step. They join the
per-step bind_const at the top of forward, as an explicit subset rather than
**step because the MLA helpers' raw_calls do not take the projection's
engine-bookkeeping keys. Prefill's _mla_append and _mla_load get the same
treatment, guarded by the cached-ctx flavor whose ctx_* fields are the only
place those metadata attributes exist.

The attention scratch moves out of the loop: eight tensors (nine on the
prefill side, which also owns the context K buffer) were allocated per layer,
488 empties per decode step for buffers whose sizes depend only on step
constants. One set now serves all layers -- safe because each layer's producer
fully rewrites a buffer before that layer's consumer reads it and the whole
attention path runs on the main stream, so layer i+1 cannot overwrite what
layer i still reads. Six of them ride the per-step bind of _mla_gen and
_attn_gen together with predicted_tokens_per_seq.

The call sites keep only the data flow:
_mla_gen(fused_q=..., q_pe=..., latent_cache=..., layer=i).

The two mtp_forwards are deliberately untouched: the draft step runs a single
layer per call, so there is no repetition to hoist, and the same change there
would scatter one call across three binding sites for no reuse.

Verified on 4xGB300: modeling_v2 suite 295 passed / 0 failed; deepseek gsm8k
identity 94.69 / mtp3 94.69 (reference 94.24), acceptance 2.942 against stock

…ut = op(in)

gpt_oss's targets follow one form -- a call site always binds what the op
wrote, even when it also passes the buffer (attn_out = self._attn(q=...,
output=attn_out)). deepseek still had op(in, out) statements, which read as if
their tensors were only consumed when some were being overwritten.

The root cause sat in the catalog, not the call sites: three deepseek-only
in-place entries -- bmm_out, mla_rope_generation, mla_rope_append_paged_kv_
assign_q -- had raw_calls that returned nothing, so there was nothing to bind.
They now return what they write (out, fused_q, q), the same move the three
norm entries got when gpt_oss adopted the form.

All four forwards convert, both trunk and draft:

    fq_nope_t  = self._absorb(a=torch.transpose(q_nope, 0, 1), out=fq_nope_t, layer=i)
    fused_q    = self._mla_gen(fused_q=fused_q, q_pe=q_pe, latent_cache=latent_gen, layer=i)
    lat_out    = self._attn_gen(..., output=lat_out, layer=i)
    attn_gen_t = self._expand(a=lat_out_t, out=attn_gen_t, layer=i)
    q_ctx      = self._mla_append(q=q_ctx, latent_cache=latent_ctx, layer=i)
    attn_ctx   = self._attn_ctx(..., output=attn_ctx, layer=i)
    o, residual = self._norm2(o, residual, layer=i)
    mlp_out, residual = self._next_norm(mlp_out, residual, layer=i)

The transposed scratch views (fq_nope_t, lat_out_t, attn_gen_t) become named
step constants beside the buffers they view, which also collapses the absorb
and expand call sites from nested-transpose blocks to one line each. Checked
structurally: zero bare-expression op calls remain in any target forward of
either model.

bmm_out's unit test pinned the old contract -- `assert op(a, w, out) is None,
"the op writes in place"`. It now asserts the stronger version of the same
fact: `is out` proves the op wrote this very buffer and returned it, not a
copy that happens to match.

…log into the model

The catalog is meant to be the shared vocabulary; an op only one target ever
calls does not belong there. Eleven move into an `ops/` subtree under their
owning model, keeping the category layout (attention/moe/gemm/quantization):

  deepseek (8): load_paged_kv_cache_for_mla, mla_rope_append_paged_kv_assign_q,
    mla_rope_generation, bmm_out, fp4_block_scale_moe_runner, fused_moe,
    noaux_tc_op, fp4_quantize
  gpt_oss (3): fused_qk_norm_rope, mxe4m3_mxe2m1_block_scale_moe_runner,
    mxfp8_quantize

Eight stay shared: thop_attention, cublas_mm, flashinfer_rmsnorm,
flashinfer_fused_add_rmsnorm (multi-model), plus flashinfer_silu_and_mul,
allgather, reducescatter, nvfp4_gemm (deepseek-only today but kept in catalog
for generality -- SiLU is a ubiquitous activation, the two collectives are
distributed infrastructure any TP/EP model needs, and nvfp4_gemm is the generic
NVFP4 GEMM beside cublas_mm).

Each moved op is wrapper + GPU test (no .md contracts exist despite the index's
aspiration). Both move via git mv, preserving history. The wrapper's one import
-- `from .._op import ...` -- becomes the absolute catalog path, since _op
stays in the catalog; modeling.py imports the op through a relative `.ops.<cat>`
path. The test keeps its `__extra_import_path__` mechanism, widened to reach
_validating from two directories deeper.

index.yaml drops the eleven moved entries (now 8). The CI lists collect
`unittest/_torch/modeling_v2` by directory, and the moved tests stay under that
tree (models/<model>/<cat>/), so they are still collected without a list change.

Import closure checked statically across all model files; ruff clean. Accuracy
verification in flight.

The allgather and reducescatter op matrices spawned their own 4-rank mpirun,
which inside a SLURM-launched container picks the slurm launcher (shells out to
srun, absent in the container) and sizes its slot budget from the outer
allocation (refuses -n 4). The tests were correct -- CI runs them -- but they
could not run anywhere else without three OMPI env vars, and they looked like
known failures for weeks.

They now spawn one torch.multiprocessing worker per device and rendezvous
through torch.distributed's env://, so they run on any 4-GPU box with a plain
pytest and no environment at all. Each worker scrubs the inherited PMIx/PMI/
OMPI namespace from its children, or the first hard exit trips srun's pmix
errhandler and SIGKILLs the whole step.

Running under torch.distributed means the ops take the ProcessGroup path the
product uses when mpi_disabled(): the entries gain a `process_group` argument
that selects the `_pg` op symbol (None keeps the MPI-session symbol), and the
matrices bind a boxed c10d group once, so every call site keeps its certified
shape. A rank subset is now a real sub-ProcessGroup, not just a shorter group
list. The host-side engine-sync check uses a gloo group rather than
constructing the engine's TorchDist, which needs ray importable.

Three kinds of check changed because the PG path's behaviour differs from the
MPI path's, none of them the wrapper's own contract:
- the wrapper guards (non-contiguous, 0-d, wrong-length sizes, uncovered split,
float8) drop the "the bare op silently corrupts" demonstration and keep only
the assertion that the wrapper rejects the input -- the PG op raises instead
of corrupting, and the guard is what the test protects.
- the cold-first-capture check inverts: the PG communicator exists before any
op runs, so a group's first call captures into a graph straight away rather
than failing; replay correctness is what it now certifies.
- the two checks that measured the MPI op's corruption-on-misuse (byte-pattern
float8 sum and poison / mispaired) are removed: they asserted MPI
implementation detail, the PG path does not reproduce it, and neither carries
a wrapper contract. The launcher's wedge sub-job and its helpers go with them.

The per-batch-size graph capture copies each op output into a persistent buffer
outside the shared graph pool: the ops' pooled outputs alias across graphs, so
a burst of replays with no sync between them left them all holding the last
writer's result. The copy, ordered after the op on the one stream, reads the
right value before the next graph overwrites the pool, which is what lets the
burst pass test the collective's ordering rather than die on pool aliasing.

Verified on 4xGB300: allgather 21 checks, reducescatter 28 checks, all ranks,
with no mpirun and no OMPI env; the modeling_v2 unit suite is green.

… passed at the call

A catalog entry is a callable and nothing more. `bind_const`,
`bind_layered`, the per-key step-generation stamps and `raw_call` are
gone; the certified surface is `__call__`, it reads nothing off `self`,
and a target passes the weights, the per-step batch state and the
configuration scalars at every call site, the way the forwards did before
the binding layer existed.

Targets now take their per-layer weight views once in `__init__` -- a
`_Layer` row per decoder layer, built by `_layer_views` -- and the
forward loops read `L.qkv`, `L.fc1_w`, ... straight into the calls. The
deepseek draft step reads `core._mtp` directly, so `MTPLayer` no longer
has a post-load hook of its own. The gpt_oss MoE runner's `bind_glu`
becomes `glu_vectors`, a helper that returns the three per-expert
epilogue vectors for the target to hold and pass.

Tests follow: `validating()` interposes `is_valid` on `__call__` and
drops the stale-binding check, the claims gates are renamed for the
surface they guard, the comm matrices hand the boxed process group
through a `functools.partial` and arm the guard on the entry itself, and
`test_modeling_v2_op_bind.py` is removed with the interface it tested.

…ses into each model

A model's targets and its weight table are its own code, not instances of
a shared abstraction. `_target.py` and `_weights.py` are gone: each
`PrefillTarget` / `DecodeTarget` is a plain class that holds its core,
owns its step-contract flag and check, and the core's `_select_target`
reads `num_contexts == 0` directly. Each `weights.py` carries its own `W`
row type and the three passes over its table -- `declare`, `manifest`,
`load` -- with no base class deciding their shape.

The two models therefore share no code beyond the catalog ops and the
validate flag, so a future model is free to run a step or load a
checkpoint however it needs to.

Tests: the target-layer test file, which tested the base class, is
removed; its gpt_oss decode-literal gate moves into the claims suite.

gpt-oss's weight table still called the deleted ModelWeights base's
expected_unconsumed from load; every key in that checkpoint is one the
table names, so the coverage check compares consumed against the
checkpoint directly. The comm matrices read reference, compare and CELLS
off the functools.partial that replaced the bound entry, which has none
of them; they read them off the entry now. The nvfp4_gemm test imported
fp4_quantize from the catalog path it moved out of.

… op and into its test

compare was a member of OpWrapper that nothing on the way to the kernel
ever called: it stated how close __call__ and reference have to be, which
is the test's business. Each entry's band now lives in that entry's test
as a module-level _compare, docstring and derivation intact; the entries
that used the base default call torch.testing.assert_close directly, and
the comm matrices gate bitwise in their own _assert_bitwise. ULP and
assert_within_ulp, which only those bands used, move to the test tree's
_validating alongside the fixtures, and the e4m3 band constants the two
MLA rope entries carried for their gates move to the tests that apply
them. certifying arms __call__ and reference, the two members that
remain. The op wrapper is now __call__, reference, is_valid, CELLS, ARCHS
and note.

…name the layer rows _LayerWeights

The rope-table growth and the cached-context flavor are decided on the
first forward; a one-call helper named _derive_first_step said less than
the two statements do in place, so forward carries them now. The per-layer
weight view tuple both models build is _LayerWeights: it holds nothing but
the views the ops read, and _Layer read as if it were the layer.

…e current tree

catalog/index.yaml described a catalog of .md contracts with receipts,
19 entries all under catalog/, and a hand-synced listing nothing read.
None of that is the tree any more: an entry is one OpWrapper subclass
whose test re-proves its cells on every commit, and the entries only one
model calls live under that model's ops/. The two catalog packages the
move emptied, moe/ and quantization/, go with it. The README's layout,
status, and ownership sections now say what the tree is rather than
what it was, and no longer carry gate numbers that drift with nothing to
notice.

… off route

Every cell test seeded its operands from hash(cell.why), which Python
salts per process: the same cell drew different operands on every run,
and fp4_quantize's tie-window bound tripped on roughly one run in six.
The seed is a CRC of the same string now, so a cell is one fixed input.

The two target gates in the claims suite still walked a TARGET_MODULES
table the routing modules no longer carry; they read the targets off the
route import the way the rest of the file does, and the deepseek carve-out
from before its target split is gone. The two entry gates (no instance
state in __call__, every cell list driven by a test) now cover the entries
a model owns under ops/ as well as the shared catalog.

…ayout: OpWrapper entries, a target's own ops/, phase targets

Brings the workflow onto the modeling_v2 conventions of NVIDIA#19977, which this branch sits on.
Catalog entries are OpWrapper classes whose ARCHS and CELLS are the executable contract:
the survey reads certification from them, delivery checks them (and a target's own
ops/<category>/ entries with their tests), and the smith and kernel skills write them, in
the shared catalog or the target's ops/. Delivery checks the target as Prefill/DecodeTarget
over a ModelingV2Core with a ModelWeights table, the modeling skills and the role prompts
describe that target, the gates turn on the step-contract check, and the capacity audit
leaves a target's ops/ to their cells.

Squashed from user/williamj/staircase-polish @ c8109d6f90 (11 commits):

…merged

The delivery audit still checked the pre-merge NVIDIA#19977 contract: entries
defining raw_call, targets deriving from Target, a ModelWeights table,
every entry listed in catalog/index.yaml, and routing naming the target
by its absolute module path. As merged, an entry's op call is __call__,
targets and weight tables have no base class (a class with a WEIGHTS
table, exposed as MODEL_WEIGHTS), there is no catalog index, and routing
imports the target relative to its family package. The real gpt-oss and
DeepSeek targets now pass every check (25 and 43).

…apper contracts

Convert the 23 K3 catalog entries this branch adds from a function plus a prose .md contract to the executable OpWrapper form main adopted in NVIDIA#19977: __call__ keeps each function's signature and dispatch behind a module-level instance of the same name, and reference, is_valid, CELLS, ARCHS and note carry what the .md pages stated. Their GPU tests now drive the entry's CELLS under validating() against its reference, keeping the existing graph, replay, bitwise and rejection cases.
