Several rules here are checked only against MemoryDriver, so a real store's driver never meets them: no raise once an operation is recorded, NOT_READY for a key another writer still holds, DECLINED for a row with no room while the other rows go on, and a get blocked in the store delaying neither another get nor poll, access_ended or drain. A driver that holds its own lock across the store call fails none of the 18 shared checks. Could these move into DriverConformance behind staging hooks that return None to skip, as make_blocked_probe does?

Nothing checks that an operation leaves the rest of its registration alone. A get that also overwrites every slot of its region it was not given passes every check here and in test_memory_driver.py. Could a check register three slots, get into the middle one, and assert the other two and the canaries are unchanged once access ends? Holding back only a stuck operation's own slots depends on this.

Each check registers fresh buffers, so a driver whose store takes its memory once, when built, cannot run the suite: KVCR receives its framework memory at construction. Could endpoints get their memory through an overridable hook that defaults to HostBuffer, so such a driver can hand out slots of memory it registered up front, with the register and unregister checks skipping when it cannot register more?

Four checks require MISS for a key nobody published (here and at lines 341, 355 and 368). A driver whose store reports a failed fetch without a reason can only answer FAULT for such a key, so it fails these even with one row per operation. Could drivers declare, through a capability that defaults to unsupported, that get answers MISS for an absent key, with these checks asking for MISS only from drivers that declare it and otherwise only for a row that is not READY? MemoryDriver would declare it, so the broken drivers keep their bite.

This check reads a 4-byte object into an 8-byte slot. Mooncake answers that case with TRANSFER_FAIL, which can also mean a transfer is still running, so its driver never proves access ended and the check fails in cleanup. The other direction is unchecked: a driver that copies the head of a larger object and reports READY passes the whole suite. Could the check read a larger object into a smaller slot, and the smaller-object case accept an access end that stays unprovable while the row is FAULT? Also, FAULT promises nothing about the destination, so asserting it untouched needs the contract to say a size mismatch never lands.

Real stores are meant to run this suite outside CI, including in the CI of the teams that own those stores, so it has to import from an installed wheel. Could the suite, the broken drivers, MemoryDriver and HostBuffer move under tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/testing/, with thin wrappers left in tests/ and a check that no engine module imports testing?

_ProbesWithoutLimit drops the fourth probe's worker from _probes while it is still running, so join_probes() never joins it. With the repo's threadleak = True (tests/unittest/pytest.ini), test_each_memory_driver_check_fails_the_driver_breaking_its_rule[probes in flight are capped] fails with leaked [Thread(memory-driver-probe)] in about 1–8% of local runs, depending on scheduling. Jenkins reruns usually hide it, but it is a flaky case in both pre-merge CPU stages.

Every harness uses the same partition and A/B/C keys. Fresh clients of a persistent store therefore inherit earlier test objects. With conformant drivers sharing one MemoryStore, the round-trip test passes, then the size-mismatch and duplicate-key checks fail.
Shall we give each harness an isolated key namespace and test fresh clients against one persistent store?

The driver boundary can only describe host memory, one span per row: Span is host memory, RowIO has a single payload, and neither RegionLayout nor DriverCapabilities can say that a region is device memory. A store that registers the cache's own pools cannot be expressed. Could it take this shape before merge:
RowIO(key, spans: tuple[Span, ...])instead ofpayload: Span. The stored object is the spans back to back, so keys do not change. A span is any non-empty range inside a registered region and need not be a whole slot: a staging row has one span, a row lent in place has one span per pool of its pool group in pool order, and a row may also cover only parts of slots, for example when the two sides of a transfer are sharded differently.positioncan go.Spandescribed as a range in a registered region rather than host memory.RegionLayoutgainsmemory_kind: MemoryKind = MemoryKind.HOST, with oneMemoryKindshared with the backend contract rather than a separate enum.DriverCapabilitiesgains two fields, both defaulting to False:device_memory, which lets a driver register DEVICE regions, andmulti_span, which lets it receive rows of more than one span. A row lent in place needs both; a host-only driver can declaremulti_spanalone.- The suite's size checks compare an object with the total bytes of its row's spans rather than with a slot.
- A test-tree example driver that declares both and reads and writes multi-span rows.
Host-staging drivers stay unchanged, while a device-capable store can register the cache's own pools.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Three parts of this are still open at e153916:
RegionLayouthas nomemory_kind, so a driver that declaresdevice_memorycannot tell fromregister(address, nbytes, layout)whether a region is host or device memory, and registering memory with a transport needs to know (NIXL registers DRAM and VRAM segments differently). CouldRegionLayoutgainmemory_kind: MemoryKind = MemoryKind.HOST, reusing the backend contract'sMemoryKind? Until the contract PR ([TRTLLM-16186][feat] Define backend contract for KV cache transfers #20117) lands, this PR can carry a byte-identical copy ofdisaggregation/base/memory.py; whichever of the two lands later keeps main's copy, and the blob package docstring's line about not importing the contract changes with it.- No driver declares
device_memoryand no check registers a DEVICE region.MemoryDrivercould declare it and run the multi-span checks over regions registered as DEVICE (plain memory in-process). - The size checks still use one-span rows, so a driver that, for multi-span rows only, scatters as much of a larger object as fits and reports READY passes every shared check. Reading an 8-byte object into a row of two 3-byte spans would catch it.
… widen rows to spans Rows are a key plus disjoint spans; DriverRejected stands apart from store errors; NOT_READY, DECLINED and CANCELLED are not faults, and new capabilities (absent_is_miss, device_memory, multi_span) default to unsupported. The conformance suite, harness, in-memory driver and broken drivers move to tensorrt_llm._torch.disaggregation.testing with scenario and memory hooks, per-harness key prefixes, and cleanup that retains memory it cannot prove released. This check never asks about the stalled get itself, so two rules are checked only by MemoryDriver's own tests: unregister refuses a region an operation may still access, and the non-blocking calls on an operation that is inside the store answer at once with access_ended still False. A driver that unregisters a busy region, or one whose poll waits on the stalled transfer, passes all shared checks. While the get is stalled, could this check also assert that unregistering its region raises DriverRejected (when endpoints register on demand) and, if get has already returned its handle, that poll, access_ended and access_unprovable on that handle return at once with access_ended False? Running the suite also against a MemoryDriver variant whose get returns once the operation is recorded would keep the second part exercised, and _UnregistersBusyRegions could pair with this check.

Three places disagree on what a driver without absent_is_miss answers for an absent key: line 72 says it reports FAULT, this line says it may conclude FAULT, and assert_absent accepts anything but READY. Could both docstrings state one rule, for example: any driver answers MISS only when the store reported the key absent and FAULT for any failure, and absent_is_miss adds that an absent key always concludes MISS? Also, "the backend's fault accounting counts misses too" describes what the backend does with such FAULTs; that is for the backend to decide and need not be fixed in the driver contract.

Some rejections that put and get promise go unchecked for some drivers:
- This check needs
registers=True, so a driver whose memory is registered up front skips it, and a pool driver that never checks registration passes all its shared checks. The stray-buffer half registers nothing and could run for every driver. In the same mode the unregister-idempotency and close-ordering checks are skipped too. - Every span tried lies wholly outside a registration; a driver that checks only where a span starts accepts one that runs past the end of its region, and passes every check.
put's Raises lists a two-span row for a driver withoutmulti_span, but no check hands one over; a driver that takes it and moves only the first span passes all shared checks. Since the caller already guarantees not to send such rows, making that rejection optional, as for an unexpected hint, would also settle it.

When a driver reports this get unprovable, nothing checks what that implies: drain returns False at once rather than waiting out its budget, and the reader's region stays registered. A driver whose drain waits out its budget in that state passes all shared checks. Could a scenario hook stage a get whose end of access the driver cannot prove, with a check that drain then returns False well within its budget and, when endpoints register on demand, that unregistering the reader raises DriverRejected?

The in-memory driver counts its background workers in drain and concludes an operation whose thread cannot start. Signed-off-by: Tingfeng Xian <289617005+nv-xtf@users.noreply.github.com>

Dev Engineer Review
StoreDriverprotocol and versioned blob-key encoding. The public backend contract remains unchanged. The changes do not add production store wiring or a store SDK.DriverRejectedindicates that no effects escaped; other failures can require callers to keep memory protected.e153916was not supplied. KV reuse through a byte store (Mooncake, KVCR, ...) needs a seam between the blob
backend and each store SDK. This PR adds that seam, a driver that stands in for a
store in tests, and the tooling that proves any driver honours the seam. It adds no
backend and no real SDK; those are follow-up PRs.
The boundary (
_torch/disaggregation/blob/store.py, private)StoreDriveranswers two questions separately per operation: each row's logicalresult (
poll) and whether the operation may still touch the caller's memory(
access_ended, withaccess_unprovablefor a store that lost the evidence).Neither answer implies the other.
DriverRejectedis the only raise that certifies nothing escaped; it is not aStoreError, so store-trouble handlers never swallow it. Once an operation isrecorded, every failure is a row result.
DriverCapabilities: grants are declared explicitly, later fields default tonot supported (
hints,absent_is_miss,device_memory,multi_span).RowIO(key, spans);RegionLayoutcarriesmemory_kind. Memory kindis verified at
register; hint and multi-span mismatches are the caller's toavoid. A hint is an opaque immutable snapshot handed only to a driver that
declares
hints.is any failure; CANCELLED only for rows that never started. Cancel is best
effort. Object format and integrity are each driver's own.
blob/keys.pyholds the key encoding (prefix/v1/hex(name)).base/memory.pyis a byte-identical copy of
MemoryKindfrom #20117; whichever PR lands seconddrops its copy.
The test tooling (
_torch/disaggregation/testing/, ships in the wheel so adriver's own CI can import it; no engine module imports it, and a test guards that)
driver_conformance.DriverConformance: the checks every driver must pass, observed through the protocol alone. A driver's test module subclasses it,
provides
make_driverand whichever scenario hooks its store can stage. Theharness keeps memory alive when a driver never proved its access ended.
memory_store.MemoryDriver: an in-process store and driver, in blocking, background (handle before completion) and controlled (test releases each
stage) modes, with a trailer and CRC32 as its own integrity mechanism.
broken_drivers: drivers that each break exactly one rule. A pairing test runseach check against the sound driver (must pass) and the broken one (must
fail), so a weakened assertion is caught before a real driver meets it.
Test Coverage
All CPU-only, under
tests/unittest/_torch/disaggregation/blob/(inl0_cpu.ymlthrough the directory):
test_memory_driver.py: the conformance suite run five ways (blocking,hint-free signatures, background, shared persistent store, pre-registered
pool); controlled-mode tests for result/access independence, cancel, probe
limits, drain/close ordering and harness retention; 39 pairing tests, one per
broken driver.
test_blob_format.py: keys, value types, capability defaults, trailer.test_testing_isolation.py: AST scan that nothing outsidetesting/imports it.Local run with
pytest-threadleak: 229 passed, 37 skipped (skips are hooks agiven suite does not stage).
