Dev Engineer Review

The inspected worktree has no changes relative to its current HEAD, so it does not provide a diff to verify the reported implementation changes. The supplied change summary reports conversion of Responses API image and text parts, multimodal request submission, and updated documentation. Source-level correctness and test execution results cannot be verified from the available diff.

QA Engineer Review

The supplied change summary reports changes to three test files: test_responses_input_preprocess.py, test_chat_template_dispatch.py, and _test_openai_chat_multimodal.py. It describes coverage for input conversion and rejection, text-only and multimodal token preparation, and typed and untyped image requests. The preprocessing test is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml; the image integration test was not found in the inspected CI or manual-QA lists. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up because the worktree contains no test diff, and no test results were supplied.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • docs/source/commands/trtllm-serve/trtllm-serve.rst — The supplied summary reports documentation for multimodal Responses API image input and unsupported file_id and input_file cases. The inspected worktree has no diff to verify those changes.
  • tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_server.py — The supplied summary reports passing multimodal_server_config to Responses preprocessing. Verify this behavior against the intended branch; the inspected worktree has no diff.
  • tensorrt_llm/serve/responses_utils.py — The supplied summary reports image-part conversion and multimodal prompt construction. Verify supported input shapes and rejection behavior; the inspected worktree has no diff.
  • tests/unittest/inputs/test_chat_template_dispatch.py — The supplied summary reports separate text-only and multimodal token-preparation tests. Its test-list status was not established.
  • tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/_test_openai_chat_multimodal.py — The supplied summary reports typed and untyped image-request tests. The image test was not found in the inspected CI or manual-QA lists.
  • tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_responses_input_preprocess.py — The supplied summary reports conversion and rejection tests. This file is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml.

Description

Fixes https://nvbugs/6613027: /v1/responses never delivered an image to the model.

  • Typed message items ({"type": "message", ...}, the shape Codex CLI sends) kept only the text of their content parts, so an input_image was dropped silently. The request returned 200 and the model answered as if it had seen the image.
  • Untyped message items ({"role": "user", "content": [...]}, the shape the OpenAI SDK sends) reached the chat parser with input_text / input_image parts it does not know, so the request failed with 400 Unknown part type: input_text, even for plain text.
  • The multimodal data was discarded. _create_input_tokens gathered mm_data, but request_preprocess dropped it (input_tokens, _ = ...) and the request was always submitted as token ids.

Changes in tensorrt_llm/serve/responses_utils.py:

  • Both item shapes convert Responses content parts to chat parts: input_text to text, input_image to image_url (URL string, or the chat-style {"url": ...} object; detail is kept), in their original order. Text-only content still collapses to one string, so text requests render exactly as before. Media parts already in chat form, including input_audio, which has the same shape in both APIs, pass through.
  • An input_image given only by file_id, and input_file content, are rejected with a 400 instead of being dropped, since this server has no Files API.
  • A request that carries media is rendered to a text prompt and submitted with multi_modal_data (and mm_item_order), as the chat completions route does, so the model's input processor expands the image placeholders. Text-only requests are still rendered straight to token ids.
  • The server's multimodal_server_config (--media_io_kwargs) now applies to Responses requests, as it does to chat completions.

A text-only model that receives an image fails the same way it does on chat completions (400 Unknown modality: image) instead of silently answering. docs/source/commands/trtllm-serve/trtllm-serve.rst now lists the Responses API as supported for multimodal models and shows the input_image shape.

Not in this PR: usage.output_tokens_details.reasoning_tokens is still reported as 0, which the bug also mentions.

Test Coverage

  • tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_responses_input_preprocess.py (CPU-Generic-x86-1, CPU-Generic-arm-1): conversion of typed and untyped items with images, the text-only untyped case, the URL object form, chat-style passthrough, rejection of file_id images and input_file, and a full ResponsesRequest validation round trip with and without detail.
  • tests/unittest/inputs/test_chat_template_dispatch.py (CPU-Generic): _create_input_tokens returns token ids for text-only input, and an untokenized prompt carrying multi_modal_data and mm_item_order when media is present.
  • tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/_test_openai_chat_multimodal.py::test_responses_image_input[message|untyped] (A10-PyTorch, through test_e2e.py::test_openai_chat_multimodal_example, Qwen3-VL-2B-Instruct): an image sent to /v1/responses raises usage.input_tokens above the same request without it.
  • Locally (no build), the shipped conversion code was run on the bug's request shapes after real pydantic / openai validation. On main, untyped items are rejected by the chat parser and typed items lose the image; on this branch, both reach the chat parser as text + image_url.

…imodal models

/v1/responses never delivered an image to the model. A typed message
item kept only the text of its content parts, so input_image was
dropped and the model answered as if it had seen the image. An untyped
message item, the shape the OpenAI SDK sends, reached the chat parser
with input_text and input_image parts it does not know, so the request
failed with "Unknown part type: input_text", even for plain text. The
multimodal data the chat parser did build was discarded as well: the
request was always submitted as token ids.

Responses content parts are now converted to chat parts, input_text to
text and input_image to image_url, in their original order; text-only
content still collapses to one string. An image given only by file_id
and input_file content are rejected with a 400 instead of being
dropped. A request that carries media is rendered to a text prompt and
submitted with its multi_modal_data, as the chat completions route
does, and the server's media IO configuration applies to it.

Walkthrough

Responses preprocessing now converts supported image and text parts into chat content and builds multimodal prompt inputs. The Responses endpoint passes multimodal configuration to preprocessing. Tests and documentation cover image input and rejected file content.

Changes

Responses API image input

Layer / File(s) Summary
Convert Responses content parts
tensorrt_llm/serve/responses_utils.py, tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_responses_input_preprocess.py
Text parts are joined, image URLs become chat image parts, and recognized media parts are preserved. Missing image URLs and input_file parts raise ValueError. Tests cover typed and untyped messages, URL objects, chat-style content, and whole-request conversion.
Construct multimodal prompt inputs
tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_server.py, tensorrt_llm/serve/responses_utils.py, tests/unittest/inputs/test_chat_template_dispatch.py
The Responses endpoint passes multimodal configuration into preprocessing. Text-only requests return tokenized prompts. Requests with media return multimodal prompt inputs with media data and optional item order or embeddings. Tests cover both prompt forms.
Document and exercise image requests
docs/source/commands/trtllm-serve/trtllm-serve.rst, tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/_test_openai_chat_multimodal.py
Documentation shows image input by URL or base64 data URL and describes rejection of file_id images and input_file content. API tests cover typed and untyped image requests and compare input-token usage with text-only requests.

165-175: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Use an image-dependent oracle for test_responses_image_input.

The test uses an external seashore.png path and has no expected response fixture. It checks only non-empty output and token usage. Adding with_image.output_text != text_only.output_text would not reliably detect a dropped payload because placeholder tokens can change the prompt and produce different generic output.

Add two same-size fixtures, such as solid red and solid blue squares. Ask the same question for both: Answer with one word: red or blue. Assert that each response contains its fixture's color. A dropped payload then receives no pixel distinction and cannot satisfy both assertions reliably.

Re CodeRabbit's nitpick on test_responses_image_input (review 5509296603): I'm keeping the token-count check and not switching to red/blue fixtures.

  • The images come from the shared llm_models_root()/multimodals/test_data store, not from this repo, and that store has no solid-color squares.
  • A one-word colour answer from a 2B model is a less stable oracle than the prompt length.
  • The failure this PR fixes is an image that never reaches the model. A dropped image leaves the prompt exactly as long as the text-only one. A delivered image adds its vision tokens, which for seashore.png on Qwen3-VL is hundreds of tokens. So with_image.usage.input_tokens > text_only.usage.input_tokens separates the two cases.
