Description

Adds PyTorch-backend support for pplx-decider (perplexity-ai/pplx-decider-v1.1-27b, PplxDeciderForDecision), a text-only decision model built on the Qwen3.5 hybrid backbone with a 255-way last-token readout. It consumes a prompt over the encode-only path and returns 255 raw decision logits per sequence instead of vocabulary logits.

  • New PplxDeciderForDecision model: Qwen3.5 hybrid backbone plus readout head, no lm_head; single packed prefill from a zero recurrent state with FULL (non-causal) attention on the full-attention layers.
  • Flattens the composite Qwen3.5 VLM config to Qwen3NextConfig and drops the vision tower, selected via an explicit architecture override (model_kwargs.architectures).
  • Weight mapper handles the prefix-less language_model.* backbone weights and the separate readout.safetensors.
  • trtllm-serve embeddings auto-detects the checkpoint; Python LLM.encode callers pass model_kwargs.architectures = ["PplxDeciderForDecision"].
  • Registers the architecture in architecture_allowlist.py and supported-models.md.

Fixes #20237

Test Coverage

  • tests/unittest/_torch/modeling/test_modeling_pplx_decider.py (cpu_only): config flattening and num_labels, architecture registration, non-generation detection, and weight-name normalization (vision tower dropped).
  • tests/unittest/llmapi/test_embedding_arch_routing.py: serve-side checkpoint detection and architecture routing.
  • tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_args.py: model_kwargs propagation through the early config load.

Dev Engineer Review

The config loader now honors model_kwargs.architectures when selecting a model config. For PplxDeciderForDecision, it flattens the composite Qwen3.5 config into Qwen3NextConfig and sets the 255-label count. The embedding-serving route detects matching decision_config.json fields and selects the decision architecture; unreadable or non-matching configs do not trigger that route.

The changed-file list also includes import-formatting changes in model_config.py, the checkpoint package initializer, modeling_qwen3_next.py, model_loader.py, and parts of test_llm_args.py. No additional behavior change is evident in the inspected formatting-only hunks. The inspected model implementation requires context-only input with sequence lengths and returns final-token readout logits. Test execution results are not provided.

QA Engineer Review

The changed test file is tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_args.py. The supplied change summary describes a regression test for forwarding model_kwargs through config loading and applying the resolved model’s attention-backend default. No changed PPLX-specific test file appears in the repository’s reported modified paths. No matching test-list entry was found in tests/integration/test_lists/; applicability to CI or manual-QA lists is not established for these unit tests. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. The available evidence does not show test results or execution of the decision model against a checkpoint.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/model_config.py — The inspected diff changes formatting only. Verify there is no unintended import or runtime change.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/models/checkpoints/__init__.py — The initializer retains the PPLX weight-mapper import while changing formatting. Verify the mapper remains available through the package.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/models/modeling_qwen3_next.py — The inspected diff changes formatting only. Verify the Qwen3-Next decoder behavior remains unchanged.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/config_utils.py — Config selection now accepts the architecture override and creates a flattened Qwen3Next config with 255 labels for the decision model. Verify override precedence and ordinary Qwen3.5 config loading.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/model_loader.py — The inspected diff changes formatting only. Verify existing model-default resolution remains unchanged.
  • tensorrt_llm/commands/serve.py — Embedding routing now checks the decision config contract before selecting the PPLX architecture. Verify valid, invalid, missing, and unreadable decision configs route as expected.
  • tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_args.py — This unit-test file covers LLM argument and model-default behavior; the change summary identifies a regression test for model-kwargs forwarding. It was not found in the integration test lists, and no test run is reported.

Preserve the checkpoint dtype and test the decision logits against the expected final-token values before merging. A supported checkpoint layout may otherwise fail during model setup, and the model’s principal output path lacks a meaningful regression test.

185-201: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Cover boundary construction and last-token values.

The current tests do not execute PplxDeciderForDecision.forward. A test that checks only [2, 255] and torch.float32 cannot detect an off-by-one gather, because an incorrect token can produce the same shape and dtype.

Add a GPU-enabled test with two different sequence lengths. Assert the generated packed boundaries, such as [0, 2, 5] for lengths [2, 3], and compare the output values with a reference that gathers each sequence's final packed token. Keep the shape and dtype assertions as secondary checks.

Preserve the composite dtype when flattening the PPLX configuration.

When the composite checkpoint declares dtype or torch_dtype only at the outer level, Qwen35ConfigCompat.normalize does not copy it into the flattened text configuration. Qwen3NextConfig.from_dict therefore leaves model_config.torch_dtype unset. The Decider's Qwen3Next hybrid layers use this value for recurrent-state/cache construction, so supported initialization can fail or use an invalid dtype. Apply the same composite dtype resolution used by the other composite branches.
