Dev Engineer Review

  • The new read-through pool shares eligible TRTLLM-Gen FMHA .cubin files across managed rank workspaces. The documented path checks rank-local storage, then the shared cubins/ directory, and publishes downloaded files by atomic rename. Shared files receive SHA-256 verification.
  • Pooling is disabled when TRTLLM_FLASHINFER_SHARED_CUBINS=0, when FLASHINFER_CUBIN_DIR is set, and for unmanaged or temporary workspaces. Other artifact types remain rank-local.
  • flashinfer_utils.py installs the wrapper when FlashInfer is available. The change is limited to the loader path and workspace behavior described above.
  • The reported two-node GB300 A/B results show median throughput of 9.815 tok/s with pooling and 9.175 tok/s without it. These are author-reported results, not independently verified here.

QA Engineer Review

  • Added CPU-only tests for placement and eligibility, reuse, artifact exclusions, corrupt shared files, failed downloads, concurrent reads, and one-time loader wrapping.
  • Added the test file to tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml, so it is listed for CI.
  • Coverage verdict: sufficient for the described CPU-side pooling behavior. GPU performance and multi-node behavior remain supported by author-reported runs, not by the added CPU tests.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • docs/source/llm-api/index.md — Documents the shared-cubin behavior, SHA-256 verification, and disable environment variable. Verify that these documented defaults and exclusions remain aligned with runtime behavior.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/flashinfer_cubin_pool.py — Adds the pooling resolver, loader wrapper, and installation path. QA should verify rank-local fallback, eligibility checks, shared-file integrity checks, and atomic publication.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/flashinfer_utils.py — Installs the wrapper when FlashInfer is available. QA should verify that FlashInfer-unavailable behavior still skips installation.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/flashinfer/test_flashinfer_cubin_pool.py — Adds CPU-only tests for pool selection, reuse, exclusions, failure handling, concurrency, and idempotent installation. Listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml; no manual-QA list entry is reported.
  • tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml — Adds the cubin-pool test file to the CPU CI list. This changes CI test selection.

Description

Fixes https://nvbugs/6825983: aggr_upload-ctx_only-gb300_nemotron-ultra-v3-fp4_8k64k_con64_ctx1_dep4_gen1_tep8_eplb0_mtp3_ccb-NIXL lost ~8 % output-token throughput on GB300 (CI 10.03 → 9.23 tok/s between L0_PostMerge builds 2967 and 2968).

Root cause

#19034 stopped pinning FLASHINFER_CUBIN_DIR to a shared directory, so FlashInfer now keeps downloaded artifacts in each rank's own workspace slot. That is the right call for compiler inputs: the trtllm-gen export headers live in the same directory, and a peer replacing one mid-compilation broke builds (nvbug 6739553). But it also made runtime cubins per-rank, and those are never compiled. FlashInfer only reads their bytes and passes them to cuModuleLoadData.

The consequence shows up whenever only some ranks have warmed a kernel. FlashInfer's TRTLLM-Gen FMHA runner loads kernel cubins lazily, the first time a request shape selects them. The perf-sanity ctx_only lane sends one warmup prompt, which under attention-DP runs on a single rank. In the first measured burst the other ranks first need fmhaSm100fKernel_…MultiCtasKvCgaVarSeqQ32Kv256StaticGroupedSwapsAbForGen.cubin. Each downloads it (~1.0 s), and every rank waits for them at the next collective. In every affected rep, rank-0 iteration 3 takes ~1.3 s instead of ~0.42 s. That stall is the whole regression.

Fix

Share the TRTLLM-Gen FMHA kernel cubins across the ranks of a launch again, and only those.

tensorrt_llm/_torch/flashinfer_cubin_pool.py wraps flashinfer.jit.cubin_loader.get_artifact. FlashInfer's C++ cubin callback looks that name up on every call, so rebinding the module attribute reaches the FMHA runtime loader. For files directly under ArtifactPath.TRTLLM_GEN_FMHA ending in .cubin, a lookup goes:

  1. the rank-local cache (FlashInfer's own path, unchanged);
  2. a cubins/ directory next to the launcher-managed rank-N slots, read in place;
  3. FlashInfer's download, after which the bytes are published to that directory with an atomic rename.

Every byte read from the shared directory is checked against the artifact's SHA-256. A truncated or stale entry is ignored and replaced.

What is deliberately not shared: headers, checksums.txt, anything under include/, and every other artifact family (BMM/GEMM export headers, DeepGEMM, cuDNN, CuTe-DSL). These keep FlashInfer's per-rank path, so nvbug 6739553 stays fixed.

The pool is active only for TensorRT-LLM-managed rank-N workspaces (TRTLLM_FLASHINFER_WORKSPACE_MANAGED=1). It is skipped when the user sets FLASHINFER_CUBIN_DIR (already shared), for temporary fallback workspaces, and when TRTLLM_FLASHINFER_SHARED_CUBINS=0.

Test Coverage

  • tests/unittest/_torch/flashinfer/test_flashinfer_cubin_pool.py (CPU-only, added to l0_cpu.yml):

    • pool directory placement and every disable condition;
    • one download reused by peers, read in place;
    • headers, checksums, include/ cubins and other artifact families never shared;
    • corrupt pool entries ignored and replaced;
    • failed downloads not published;
    • 16 concurrent ranks never read a partial file;
    • install wraps FlashInfer's loader exactly once.
  • GPU A/B on oci_jhb GB300: the bad commit's wheel with this change overlaid, every rep with an empty $HOME/.cache (as in a fresh CI container). Reps alternate TRTLLM_FLASHINFER_SHARED_CUBINS=1 / 0 inside one job, so ON and OFF share node, image and wheel:

Node TRTLLM_FLASHINFER_SHARED_CUBINS=1 (this PR) =0 (same wheel, pool off) Δ
nvl72d426 9.88, 9.85, 9.88, 9.82 (median 9.865) 9.17, 9.19, 9.10, 9.18 (median 9.175) +7.5 %
nvl72d412 9.76, 9.80, 9.81, 9.80 (median 9.800) 9.11, 9.22, 9.05, 9.23 (median 9.165) +6.9 %

Output token throughput in tok/s. Pooled: 9.815 vs 9.175 (+7.0 %), ranges fully separated, CV ≤ 0.95 %, ~8× the 3·SE noise gate.

An earlier version of this change also copied each pooled cubin into the reading rank's own cache and pooled every *.cubin. It showed an unexplained ~1 s all-rank stall in 3 of 7 reps, against 0 of 29 reps on the parent commit, the culprit commit and a shared-FLASHINFER_CUBIN_DIR control. This version reads pooled cubins in place and is limited to the FMHA kernel cubins. It showed that stall in 0 of 8 reps, with 0 of 8 in its same-node pool-off controls.

…olated MPI ranks

Per-rank FlashInfer workspaces keep downloaded artifacts per rank so that
trtllm-gen export headers, which are compiler inputs, are never replaced
under a peer rank's compilation. Runtime kernel cubins are only ever
loaded with cuModuleLoadData, yet they became per-rank as well, so every
rank downloads each TRTLLM-Gen FMHA kernel it uses on its own. FlashInfer
loads those kernels lazily, the first time a request shape selects one,
so a kernel that warmup does not reach is fetched on the serving path.
Under attention DP only the rank that served the warmup request has it,
and the other ranks stall on the download in lockstep.

Route lookups of the FMHA kernel cubins (the *.cubin files directly under
ArtifactPath.TRTLLM_GEN_FMHA) through a read-through pool next to the
per-rank workspace slots: try the rank-local cache, then the pool, then
download and publish to the pool with an atomic rename. Pooled cubins are
read in place and checked against the artifact's SHA-256. Headers,
checksum files and all other artifacts keep FlashInfer's own per-rank
path. The pool is enabled only for TensorRT-LLM-managed rank-N
workspaces, is skipped when FLASHINFER_CUBIN_DIR is set, and can be
turned off with TRTLLM_FLASHINFER_SHARED_CUBINS=0.

Walkthrough

The change adds shared pooling for eligible TRTLLM-Gen FMHA cubins across managed rank workspaces. It verifies cached cubins with SHA-256, publishes downloads atomically, and leaves other artifacts on FlashInfer’s original loader path.

Changes

Shared cubin pooling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pool eligibility
tensorrt_llm/_torch/flashinfer_cubin_pool.py, tests/unittest/_torch/flashinfer/test_flashinfer_cubin_pool.py, docs/source/llm-api/index.md
The pool is enabled only for eligible managed rank workspaces. Only direct FMHA .cubin files are pooled. Documentation describes lookup order, verification, publication, and the environment setting that disables sharing.
Cubin lookup and publication
tensorrt_llm/_torch/flashinfer_cubin_pool.py, tests/unittest/_torch/flashinfer/test_flashinfer_cubin_pool.py
The wrapper checks verified local and shared cubins before using FlashInfer’s loader. Nonempty downloads are atomically published. Tests cover reuse, excluded artifacts, corrupt entries, failed downloads, and concurrent requests.
Loader installation and validation
tensorrt_llm/_torch/flashinfer_utils.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/flashinfer_cubin_pool.py, tests/unittest/_torch/flashinfer/test_flashinfer_cubin_pool.py, tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml
When FlashInfer is available, the utility module attempts pool installation. Tests cover loader wrapping and idempotence, and the CPU test list includes the new test module.

Cover the publication-failure fallback.

When _write_atomically raises OSError, pooled_get_artifact must still return the downloaded bytes. The current tests cover an empty download, which skips this branch. Add a test that injects the publication failure and asserts that the cubin bytes are returned.

Capture all worker failures.

If pooled(...) raises an exception other than AssertionError, that thread stops without adding to errors. The final assertion can then pass without checking the failed worker. Capture worker exceptions and report them on the main test thread. As per path instructions, flag “tests that can silently pass.”
