Description

Fixes #20506.

In a mixed step, the MLA generation half calls thop.attention with attention_input_type=generation_only. The workspace sizing there still received the step's num_contexts, num_ctx_tokens and host_total_kv_lens[0], which MLA.forward_context_with_chunked_prefill restores to the summed context KV length before returning. For fp8 context MLA, the context part of getWorkspaceSize includes K/V staging sized by that total. A generation-only call therefore allocated about H_local × (qk_nope + qk_rope + kv_lora_rank) bytes per context KV token for buffers it never uses. That came to 13.4 GiB for 13 concurrent 128K prefix hits, and about 132 GiB for 16 requests sharing a 1M prefix.

This PR passes zero context counts and KV length to getWorkspaceSize for generation-only calls. The context run is already skipped for them; getWorkspaceSizeForContext returns 0 when there are no context tokens. Mixed and context-only calls are unchanged.

PR Checklist

  • PR description clearly explains what and why.
  • PR follows the TRT-LLM coding guidelines to the best of my knowledge.
  • Test cases are provided for new code paths.
  • No public API changes, no new dependencies, no CODEOWNERS changes.
  • Please check this after reviewing the above items as appropriate for this PR.

Dev Engineer Review

For generation-only calls, attentionOp.cpp now passes zero context count, context-token count, and total context KV length to getWorkspaceSize. This prevents unused context workspace sizing from scaling with the context requests’ total KV length. Other workspace arguments remain unchanged. The execution path is unchanged.

QA Engineer Review

tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_attention_mla.py adds test_mla_generation_only_workspace_ignores_context_requests. It checks finite output and equal workspace sizes with 0, 1, and 4 context requests for FP8 MLA generation. The test skips without CUDA or outside SM100, SM103, and SM107. It is not listed in the integration test lists. Coverage is insufficient for other generation configurations and for mixed or context-only workspace behavior. The supplied author report says the test passed in a run with 97 passed and 8 skipped; current-checkout test results are unavailable.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • cpp/tensorrt_llm/thop/attentionOp.cpp: Verify that generation-only workspace sizing is independent of context count and total context KV length. Verify that other calls retain their context workspace sizing.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_attention_mla.py: The new FP8 MLA test checks finite output and workspace invariance for 0, 1, and 4 context requests on supported SMs. It is not listed in the integration test lists.

Walkthrough

Generation-only attention workspace sizing now excludes context counts, context-token counts, and total context KV length. Added FP8 TRTLLM MLA coverage checks finite output and compares workspace size with the no-context baseline for batches containing one or four context requests.

Explanation

Issue #20506 requires generation-only MLA workspace sizing to ignore context requests. In cpp/tensorrt_llm/thop/attentionOp.cpp, generation-only calls pass zero num_contexts, num_ctx_tokens, and ctx_total_kv_len to getWorkspaceSize. Other workspace inputs remain unchanged. The added FP8 MLA test checks equal workspace sizes for zero, one, and four context requests and checks finite output.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The production change only adjusts workspace inputs for generation-only attention calls. The test directly covers the linked issue with FP8 MLA mixed-batch metadata. The diff shows no unrelated API, dependency, or production behavior changes.

PR effort4 points — The production edit is small, but allocation safety depends on the relationship between shared batch metadata, workspace sizing and generation execution. The substantial GPU fixture also requires checking that it faithfully represents the mixed-batch condition.

CI #78855 (81a69d4): all build stages passed (x86_64 and SBSA, including the Debug and LLVM builds), so the refactor compiles. The only hard failure is the unittest/_torch/attention shard on B300-PyTorch-1, and I do not think this PR causes it:

  • About 650 tests across the whole directory fail there with CUDA driver error: 201 (invalid device context) (366) or CuOOMError: CUDA out of memory (290). Both errors are raised by the KV cache manager v2 bindings, not by the attention op. The failing tests span the DSA indexer, sparse MHA/MLA/MQA, test_attention_backends.py, FlashInfer, vanilla attention, and 3 tests in test_attention_mla.py.
  • The new test_mla_generation_only_workspace_ignores_context_requests passed in that same shard.
  • In this run the same tests passed on the other stages that ran them (DGX_B200, DGX_H100), and the ones I checked passed on B300 in the other recent runs. We have seen the same cascade of about 650 invalid device context failures in the attention suite on PRs that do not touch attention (e.g. [#20367][fix] Accept prompt_cache_key in Chat Completions requests #20368 earlier).
  • DGX_B200-PyTorch-2 hit an infra problem and passed on retry; DGX_B200-PyTorch-6 was aborted by fail-fast.

Rerunning. If the B300 shard fails the same way again, I will look into it more closely.

CI #78916 failed in the same place as #78855: only the unittest/_torch/attention shard on B300-PyTorch-1, with the same pattern (584 failures this time, all of them also in the previous list; CUDA driver error: 201 (invalid device context) and CuOOMError from the KV cache manager v2, starting in sparse/ before test_attention_mla.py is reached; the new test passed again).

This matches the KV cache manager v2 teardown problem that main fixed after this branch's base (8b2ac2d): leaked KVCacheManagerV2 instances in test_dsa_indexer.py were destroyed by the cyclic GC on a thread without a CUDA context, which poisoned KVCM2 for the rest of the process (on B300 the leaked reservations show up as OOM first). The fixes are #19650 and #20522, and #20471 removed the related waiver for unittest/_torch/attention.

Merged current main (fda7ebd) into the branch (f6fdf51, no conflicts, this PR's diff unchanged; the new test already shuts its manager down in a finally). Rerunning.

Compare generation outputs against the no-context baseline.

The workspace assertion does not detect a different finite generation result. Stabilize the KV fixture, return a cloned output, and compare each mixed-batch output with the num_contexts == 0 baseline.

The current KV bytes are not stable because torch.randint runs before torch.manual_seed(0), and the KV buffer shape changes with num_contexts.

CI #78946 (after merging main) failed outside this PR, and it did not reach the B300 attention shard this time:

  • B300-PyTorch-1 / B300-PyTorch-2: both Slurm jobs were requeued by the cluster at the same moment, about 20 minutes into the run (CANCELLED ... DUE TO JOB REQUEUE), then stayed pending on the job limit until the stages were aborted. Only two accuracy tests had finished by then, both passed; unittest/_torch/attention had not started, so this run says nothing either way about the earlier KV cache manager v2 cascade.
  • CPU-Generic-arm-1: test_mpi_session.py::test_remote_mpi_session[client_sys_path] and [flashinfer_workspace] timed out (exit status 124), the same arm-only MPI session timeout seen on other recent pipelines; this is the hard failure. DGX_B200-PyTorch-2 / -9 were cancelled by fail-fast.

The new test test_attention_mla.py::test_mla_generation_only_workspace_ignores_context_requests passed on DGX_B200-PyTorch-6.

On the earlier B300 failures: the same cascade (~650 failures from CUDA driver error: 201 (invalid device context) and CuOOMError in the KV cache manager v2 bindings, starting in test_dsa_indexer.py) also hit #20043 and #20452 on bases without #19650 / #20522. This branch now includes both fixes. Re-running.

CI #79017 failed outside this PR. The only hard failure is on DGX_B200-PyTorch-9: unittest/_torch/thop/parallel/test_cute_dsl_moe.py::test_nvfp4_gather_grouped_gemm_act_fusion_blackwell[1024-1-32-128-relu2] had 5.2% of its elements outside the atol/rtol 1e-4 tolerance, over the 5% limit. This is the known flaky tracked in #16281 (about 5.0–5.4% of elements outside the tolerance, varying parametrizations; see #16281 (comment)); the same case failed the same way on #20518 earlier today. It is in the CuTe DSL NVFP4 MoE path, which this PR does not touch. The B300 stages were then cancelled by fail-fast.

Good news on the earlier B300 failures: on the merged base, B300-PyTorch-1 ran the unittest/_torch/attention shard to completion and it PASSED, including the new test_attention_mla.py::test_mla_generation_only_workspace_ignores_context_requests. So the KV cache manager v2 cascade from #78855 / #78916 is gone with #19650 / #20522.

Re-running.
