Dev Engineer Review

The kernel now computes the mean first, then calculates variance from cached values centered on that mean. This avoids cancellation in E[x²] - mean² for affected BF16 inputs. The added reduction and synchronization may affect performance; performance was not measured. Reported GPU checks cover SM80 only. Behavior on SM90 TMA and Blackwell FP4 paths remains unverified.

QA Engineer Review

Modified tests/unittest/_torch/visual_gen/kernels/parallel/test_fused_dit_layernorm_shift_scale.py. The reported changes extend test_bf16_large_mean_small_variance to plain, affine, and modulation modes, and add a Blackwell-only FP4 test that checks finite output and cosine similarity above 0.98. The test file is a unit test, and no matching entry was found in the integration CI or manual-QA lists. Pytest was not run because a full build was unavailable. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up, because the new tests were not run and FP4 behavior was not verified.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • cpp/tensorrt_llm/kernels/fusedAdaptiveLayerNormKernel.cu: Verify finite output for affected BF16 rows and normalization behavior across plain, affine, modulation, TMA, and FP4 paths. The additional reduction and synchronization have unmeasured performance impact.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/visual_gen/kernels/parallel/test_fused_dit_layernorm_shift_scale.py: The BF16 test covers plain, affine, and modulation modes. The Blackwell-only FP4 test covers quantization and nvfp4_gemm; neither test was run according to the supplied context.

Description

Summary. fusedAdaptiveLayerNormKernel computes the row variance in FP32 as E[x²] - mean². When a row's mean is large relative to its spread, cancellation can make variance + eps negative, and the whole output row becomes NaN for finite BF16 input. This PR computes the mean first, then the variance from the cached values centered on it.

Fixes #20016.

Problem

Width 5120, BF16: two values 15.6875 followed by 5,118 values 15.75. The exact variance is about 1.53e-6, so the output should be finite. Called through its launcher on an A100, the kernel returns NaN in all 5,120 columns, in plain, affine and modulation modes, for eps 1e-6 and 1e-5.

The public op accepts any contiguous BF16 [M, 5120] input, and Wan's dense normalization calls this kernel at width 5120. We have not measured how often real activations reach this regime.

Change

  • The mean and the variance are now reduced one after the other. First the sum is reduced and the mean stored in meanRstd[0]. Then each thread sums (x - mean)² over its cached xVals, these partial sums are reduced across lanes and warps, and warp 0 stores rsqrtf(var + eps) in meanRstd[1].
  • The rest of the kernel is unchanged. The change adds one block reduction and two __syncthreads().
  • test_fused_dit_layernorm_shift_scale.py gets test_bf16_large_mean_small_variance, which runs the row above in plain mode against the file's float32 reference.

Testing

  • Ran: a standalone harness that compiles this kernel file at a1f562a with its headers (nvcc 12.9.86, GCC 11.5, sm_80) and calls launchFusedAdaptiveLayerNormKernel on an NVIDIA A100-SXM4-80GB. Without the change, the row above gives NaN in all 5,120 columns in each of the 12 witness rows (plain, affine and modulation modes, eps 1e-6 and 1e-5). With it, all 36 rows (the 12 witness rows and 24 controls of constant 1 and balanced ±1) are finite and match an FP64 reference (|error| <= 0.002 + 0.01*|reference|), and the control outputs are bitwise identical to the unpatched kernel's.
  • fusedAdaptiveLayerNormKernel.cu is unchanged on main (3163e66b) since a1f562a, so the tested patch applies as is. clang-format 16 and ruff 0.9.4 (the pinned versions) pass on the changed files.
  • Not run: performance; a full TensorRT-LLM build, and so the new test; the patched kernel on the SM90 TMA and Blackwell FP4 paths. The fix was tested only on SM80.

Test Coverage

tests/unittest/_torch/visual_gen/kernels/parallel/test_fused_dit_layernorm_shift_scale.py: the existing tests use randn rows, whose mean is small, so they never reach this regime. The new test_bf16_large_mean_small_variance covers it.

Walkthrough

The fused adaptive LayerNorm kernel now computes variance from squared deviations around the mean. Tests check finite, reference-matching output for large-mean, small-spread BF16 inputs across normalization modes and an FP4 GEMM path.

The kernel reduces the mean, then reduces squared deviations to calculate variance and reciprocal standard deviation. Tests cover plain, affine, and modulation modes. A Pre-Blackwell-gated test also checks finite FP4 GEMM output and cosine similarity above 0.98 against a BF16 linear reference.

Explanation

The description includes the required Description, Test Coverage, and PR Checklist sections. It clearly explains the numerical issue, implementation, test coverage, validation results, and known testing limitations.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The kernel change satisfies #20016. It computes the mean first and then reduces squared deviations from that mean, so it removes the E[x²] - mean² cancellation path. The existing launcher path still uses the cached xVals for the centered variance. The new BF16 regression test covers the issue row in plain, affine, and modulation modes and checks finite output against the reference.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The pull request changes only the variance reduction in fusedAdaptiveLayerNormKernel and adds focused regression coverage. The BF16 test directly covers #20016. The FP4 test exercises the same kernel change through the quantized path and checks finite output, so it supports the issue scope. No unrelated change is present in the reviewed diff.

Nit: Could you share a quick before/after kernel timing (e.g. M=75600, D=5120, BF16, plus the NVFP4-quant variant) on B200? This kernel runs 3x per Wan-14B block.
Nit: The new test only covers plain mode; consider parametrizing it over affine/modulation and the _quant variant, since Wan uses the AdaLN(+NVFP4) path.

…mean LayerNorm test

Parametrize test_bf16_large_mean_small_variance over plain, affine and modulation modes, and add test_fp4_large_mean_small_variance, which sends the same row through fused_adaptive_layernorm_quant and nvfp4_gemm as the file's other FP4 tests do. _make_inputs now accepts a given x, so the row reuses the file's reference helpers.

Thanks for the review, @taianz-nv!

Test. Pushed 6766abd. test_bf16_large_mean_small_variance now runs in plain, affine and modulation modes. A new test_fp4_large_mean_small_variance (Blackwell only) sends the same row through fused_adaptive_layernorm_quant and nvfp4_gemm in those three modes, checked like the file's other FP4 tests (finite output, cosine > 0.98). We haven't run the pytest ourselves, since we don't have a full build.

Timing. We don't have reliable GPU access right now, so we can't share timings yet.

Add an amplitude-sensitive FP4 assertion.

Cosine similarity checks direction only. A materially mis-scaled positive multiple of D_ref can pass with a cosine of 1.0. Add a norm-ratio assertion with a tolerance validated for FP4 quantization.

Suggested fix
     assert torch.isfinite(C).all()
