Missing AVX-512 support on Intel Core Ultra 9 285K (Arrow Lake) – engine fails to start #142
Description
I'm trying to run Strata on my machine, but the engine refuses to start because my CPU lacks AVX-512 instructions. I understand the engine is optimized for AVX512-VNNI and AVX512-VBMI, but I wanted to report this and ask if there are any plans for a fallback path for modern CPUs without AVX-512.
Error message:
strata: this CPU cannot run the expert kernel: missing AVX512F AVX512BW AVX512VL AVX512-VNNI AVX512-VBMI.
The engine needs AVX512-VNNI and AVX512-VBMI (Intel Ice Lake / AMD Zen 4 or newer).
The scalar fallback exists for tests only and is far too slow to decode with.

That's strange; it's already falling back to AVX2 on my Ryzen 5800 on Ubuntu 24.04.

Is AVX512 somehow disabled on your system (via BIOS)? Also Arrow Lake E-cores don't support AVX512. This might be an overlooked case for the build / run script.

Yes, this is strange, i run Strata on Arrow Lake 245K but on AVX2. Please provide some logs.

Strata runs fine on AVX2 CPUs like the 285K. That message only appears with the Q2_0 pack converted for AVX-512 (a pack without
native_experts.txt), made on another PC or started by hand. Re-runningSTART-HERE.bat --setupon this PC prepares the AVX2 version. We'll also make the message say that the pack, not the engine, needs AVX-512. If it still happens, please reopen with the log and how you started it.
