Closes #388

malibio and others added 2 commits November 4, 2025 10:32
)

**Problem**: Issue #106 left schema operations incomplete - frontend was
calling non-existent `mcp_call_tool` commands, causing failures in Tauri mode.

**Solution**: Added complete Tauri command layer for schema management.

## Changes Made

### Backend (Rust)
**New File**: `packages/desktop-app/src-tauri/src/commands/schemas.rs`
- 5 Tauri commands matching frontend needs:
  - `get_schema_definition` - Retrieve complete schema
  - `add_schema_field` - Add user field
  - `remove_schema_field` - Remove user field
  - `extend_schema_enum` - Add enum value
  - `remove_schema_enum_value` - Remove enum value
- Follows established pattern from `nodes.rs`
- Uses `CommandError` for consistent error handling
- Returns `SchemaFieldResult` with version tracking

**Modified**: `packages/desktop-app/src-tauri/src/lib.rs`
- Registered 5 new commands in invoke_handler!

**Modified**: `packages/desktop-app/src-tauri/src/commands/mod.rs`
- Added `pub mod schemas;`

**Modified**: `packages/desktop-app/src-tauri/src/commands/db.rs`
- Initialize SchemaService in Tauri state
- Ensures service available to all commands

**Modified**: `packages/desktop-app/src-tauri/src/mcp_integration.rs`
- Added `SchemaUpdatedEvent` struct
- Emit `schema-updated` events for all 4 mutation operations
- Enables real-time frontend updates from MCP changes

### Frontend (TypeScript)
**Modified**: `packages/desktop-app/src/lib/services/schema-service.ts`
- Refactored all 5 methods to call Tauri commands directly
- Removed `mcp_call_tool` wrapper indirection
- Simplified parameter passing (camelCase)
- Improved type safety with direct command calls

## Architecture Alignment

Now follows established dual-entry pattern:
```
Tauri Commands (desktop) ───┐
                            ├──▶ SchemaService (backend)
MCP Handlers (AI agents) ───┘
```

Both entry points:
- Share same SchemaService instance
- Enforce protection levels
- Emit events for UI reactivity

## Testing

- Rust unit tests for serialization in schemas.rs
- All existing tests pass
- Integration tests can be added in follow-up

## Breaking Changes

None - Fixes broken functionality without API changes.

**Changes Made:**

1. **Fixed 12 unit test failures** in `schema-service.test.ts`:
   - Updated all mocks to match new Tauri command signatures
   - Changed from `mcp_call_tool` format to direct command format
   - Fixed `get_schema_definition` to return direct SchemaDefinition instead of wrapped format
   - Updated field mutations (`add_schema_field`, `remove_schema_field`, etc.) to use camelCase parameters
   - Fixed helper method tests (`getEnumValues`, `canDeleteField`) to use correct mock format
   - Removed unused `SchemaDefinition` import
   - All 25 tests now passing

2. **Sanitized error details** in CommandError (security improvement):
   - Changed from Debug formatting (`{:?}`) to Display trait (`to_string()`)
   - Prevents leaking internal implementation details (database paths, stack traces)
   - Follows OWASP security best practices for client-exposed error messages

**Test Results:**
- ✅ All schema-service unit tests passing (25/25)
- ✅ Quality checks passing (lint, format, check)
- ✅ 1517/1524 total tests passing (pre-existing failures unrelated to our changes)

**Reviewer Feedback Addressed:**
- ✅ Critical: Fixed unit test failures
- ✅ Important: Sanitized error details for security
- ❌ Not implemented: Integration tests (determined to be unnecessary - unit tests with mocks are the appropriate test level for Tauri commands)
- ❌ Not implemented: Browser mode fallback (determined to be unnecessary - this is a Tauri desktop app, not a web app)
- ❌ Not implemented: Async Rust tests (determined to be overkill - would require complex setup with mock Tauri State)

**Engineering Rationale:**
The reviewer suggested adding full integration tests with SchemaService backend,
but this would require spinning up a full Tauri app context with database
initialization, which is excessive for command testing. The existing unit tests
with mocks provide appropriate coverage for the Tauri IPC boundary.
