Fixes #11275

Root cause

The misclassification comes from all_module_exports, the export-origin map that run_pipeline.rs builds as a fixpoint over ExportAll / ReExport / Named edges. Take import { x } from "./a"; export { x } in B, and export * from "./b" in C:

  1. First pass: B's initial map records x → B, because a Named export starts out pointing at the exporting module itself. The same pass has C's export * copy that entry, so C now has x → B. Also in that pass, B's Named branch resolves its own entry to the declaring module: x → A.
  2. Next pass: C's star branch only ever checked already_exists. C already had x, so its stale x → B was never corrected.

An importer of C then resolves the origin to B and asks exported_var_names about (B, x). That set is keyed by the declaring module, so the lookup misses. The value read then falls through to the imported-function path in dyn_extern_i18n.rs, which wraps B's zero-arg getter perry_fn_B__x in js_closure_alloc_singleton. The result is typeof x === "function", every property is undefined, and a method extracted from it throws value is not a function.

Importing x from B directly was fine, because B's own entry had converged by then. This hit every value kind: objects, primitives, arrays, arrow consts, declared functions (called as zero-arg getters, returning undefined), live let bindings, CJS values, and namespaces imported into B. Classes survived only because they resolve through a different table.

In mongodb this is bson's ByteUtils path: utils/byte_utils.ts → bson.ts (import { ByteUtils } …; export { ByteUtils }) → index.ts (export * from './bson') → mongodb/src/bson.ts. So ByteUtils.allocate(...) and ByteUtils.encodeUTF8Into failed in OpQueryRequest.toBin, and the handshake failed with MongoServerSelectionError: value is not a function.

Fix

All in run_pipeline.rs: an entry supplied through export * now keeps tracking its source until the fixpoint.

  • star_export_sources records which star source supplied each star-provided (module, name).
  • On every pass, the star branch re-copies the source's entry, including the Linker: unresolved _perry_fn_..._render for V8-fallback modules referenced from main #678 origin name, whenever it differs from what was copied before. The apply step drops a stale origin-name rename when the refined entry is back to the identity case.
  • explicit_exports lists every name a module exports explicitly: export { .. }, export { .. } from, and export * as ns. Type-only exports are excluded because they are erased. Those names shadow export *, so a star never claims or overwrites them. Without this, an explicit re-export that only lands in the map inside the loop would fight the star forever.
  • The first export * to supply a name keeps it, which makes termination explicit. A second star offering the same name is ESM's ambiguous case. Previously the last star processed in a pass silently overwrote it. Ambiguous names stay not importable in Node, so nothing observable is chosen here.

With a correct origin, the existing classification (exported_var_names / exported_func_* / class tables, all keyed by the declaring module) gives the right kind through any chain. No codegen change was needed.

Tests

New gap test test_gap_11275_reexport_value_kinds, with fixtures in test-files/fixtures/issue_11275_reexport_kinds/. It covers:

  • an object with methods, and a method extracted from it and called
  • a plain object, number, string and array
  • a declared function (checking .length), an arrow const, a class (new and instanceof) and a live let updated through an exported function
  • export { x as y } aliases
  • a namespace imported into B and re-exported, and export * as starNs
  • a CJS default re-exported
  • one and two export * hops
  • a local export shadowing a star
  • two ambiguous stars, where the non-ambiguous names must still resolve
  • an export * cycle, imported from both sides
  • import * as B of the barrel

Results against Node 26.5.1 (/opt/node-v26.5.1-linux-x64):

  • main @e1aa418e9: fails in both modes. No-auto has 22 differing lines, e.g. obj [ 'function', undefined, 'undefined', {} ], and live binding before [Function (anonymous)]. Auto-optimize (PERRY_WORKSPACE_ROOT set) fails the same way.
  • This branch: byte-identical in both modes.

A/B on perrymaster: both compilers use the same runtime archives (pinned PERRY_BUILD_COMMIT).

  • No auto-optimize: 78 gap tests whose names match export / barrel / module / import / namespace / cjs / esm / cycle / require / interop / star / reexport.
    • 74 pass in both arms with byte-identical output.
    • The new test fails on main and passes here.
    • 3 fail identically in both arms: 10428_10429_node_module_value_dispatch, 11044_native_facade_reexport_construct (Node itself exits 1), and events_import_4995.
  • Auto-optimize: 14 of the re-export / cjs / namespace / star tests. 12 pass in both arms, the new test fails on main and passes here, and 11044 fails in both arms (Node exits 1).

Other checks:

  • cargo test --release -p perry-transform -p perry-hir -p perry-codegen: 3178 passed, 0 failed.
  • cargo test --release -p perry, 21 module/import/namespace suites, 104 passed, 0 failed: imported_value_class_collision, issue_10278_dynamic_import_cycle_init, issue_10286_import_alias_collision, issue_10356_unimported_export_shadows_global, issue_10662_namespace_export_equals_fallback, issue_4841_namespace_cjs_reexport, issue_4872_barrel_default_reexports, issue_5130_nested_namespace, issue_5257_require_adopt_no_default_namespace, issue_5437_cross_module_member_new_capture, issue_6586_namespace_cjs_default_import, issue_8654_imported_static_field_cell, issue_8775_imported_object_specialization, issue_9053_exported_aggregate, module_import_forms, namespace_alias_export_of_function, namespace_classes, namespace_function_values, namespace_getter_binding_identity, namespace_variable_export_abi and source_graph_export_regressions.
  • cargo fmt --check and scripts/check_file_size.sh pass. SKIP_COMPILE_GATES=1 scripts/run_lint_gates.sh: 89 of 91 script gates pass (compile tier not run). The 2 failures are Public benchmark evidence freshness (grandfathered red) and cargo xwin check, because cargo-xwin isn't installed on the Linux host.

Not run

  • The full gap suite.
  • cargo test --workspace, and the perry integration suites not listed above.
  • The compile tier of run_lint_gates.sh.
  • macOS / Windows.
  • No perf measurement. This is compile-time metadata; the generated code changes only for affected imports, from a wrong closure wrap to the correct getter call.

As far as I can tell, no tests in suites this diff doesn't touch are affected.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed value classification for exports forwarded through re-export chains, including barrel and cyclic exports. Re-exported values now resolve correctly when their source changes.
    • Preserved explicit exports over wildcard exports and resolved ambiguous wildcard names consistently by keeping the first match.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for re-exports, shadowed and ambiguous names, CommonJS exports, and cyclic export chains.

…fixpoint (#11275)

A re-exported imported binding (import { x } from './a'; export { x }) seen
through export * kept the intermediate module as its origin: the star copied
the source's first-iteration entry and never revisited it. Importers then
missed the var/function classification (keyed by the declaring module) and
got the intermediate module's zero-arg getter wrapped as a function.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Export-star propagation now tracks explicit exports and source claims, refreshes propagated origins, and preserves the first star source for duplicate names. New fixtures and a regression test cover value kinds across re-export chains, including aliases, namespaces, CommonJS exports, shadowing, ambiguity, cycles, and live bindings.

Mark competing star exports as ambiguous.

When amb.ts re-exports dup from both amb1.ts and amb2.ts, the apply loop keeps the first claim and skips the second. The later named-import consumer reads that entry from all_module_exports, so import { dup } from "./amb.ts" can bind to the first source. ESM excludes a name supplied by competing export * declarations.

Track a distinct second source as ambiguous, remove the existing entry, and prevent later propagation.

Ready to merge once CI is clean. Fixes #11275, a mongodb blocker. The all_module_exports fixpoint in run_pipeline.rs never corrected an export * entry copied before its source resolved, so importers of a star barrel looked up the value kind under the wrong module and wrapped value getters as functions. Star entries now track their source and are re-copied when it changes, and explicit exports win over stars. The gap test covers every value kind and re-export shape, fails on main in both modes and matches Node; 78+14-test A/Bs show no regressions; hir, codegen and transform pass 3178/3178.
