fix(gc): two passes retained unreachable objects — block persistence on precise-root cycles, remembered set as roots on full traces (#9628, #9629) - #9651
Conversation
…erryTS#9629) Block persistence skipped only when the conservative scan had run, so PerryTS#7558's precise-root explicit gc() started running it: 13,364 dead objects force-marked and transitively retained in a 30-line fixture. It now skips whenever the root set is provably complete. PERRY_GC_BLOCK_PERSIST_ALWAYS=1 restores it. A full mark-sweep marked the remembered set as roots, retaining young objects through dead old-gen pages. Full traces now take the snapshot (which is what arms the write barrier) but mark nothing from it. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01DndJ3XnhyHRYqKLBZe8ygZ
…cycle Both assert that the subphase respects a tiny budget. They built that fixture on a full cycle with an UNROOTED old-gen owner and then asserted its children were marked — which is exactly the retention PerryTS#9629 removes, asserted as if it were the contract. A minor is where that marking legitimately lives, and the budget-slicing subject is unchanged. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01DndJ3XnhyHRYqKLBZe8ygZ
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe garbage collector now skips redundant block-persistence passes for selected collections. Full cycles snapshot the remembered set without marking from it, while minor cycles retain remembered-set marking. New regression tests and changelog entries cover both behaviors. Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to This change prevents unnecessary GC retention during precise-root and full collections. The override intended to restore prior block-persistence behavior lacks enabled-path regression coverage, creating a bounded follow-up risk for deployments relying on that setting. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Test the enabled override path.
Line 74 only verifies that the test process uses the default setting. It does not enable PERRY_GC_BLOCK_PERSIST_ALWAYS, run a collection, or observe block_persist_force_mark_count().
This test stays green if the override no longer restores block persistence. Run the assertion in an isolated child process, or add a test-only reset for the OnceLock, then assert that the counter increases with the override enabled.

Landed via merge train #9655 (rebase-merge, authorship preserved). |
Fixes #9628 and #9629, the two over-retention bugs found while validating the heap census. Both are "the collection ran and kept the garbage anyway", both are in the root/mark path, and both changes remove retention, so each is proven by a test that fails when its own fix is reverted.
#9628 — block persistence ran on cycles whose root set is complete
The pass force-marks every object in a nursery block that still holds one reachable object, and pushes each onto the trace worklist so their children are retained too. It exists for one hazard, stated at
trace::mark_block_persisting_arena_objects: an object the mutator holds only in a register across a collection. Its block survives (block reset is all-or-nothing and a neighbour is reachable) so the object's own memory is intact, but its individually-swept malloc children are freed under it and the mutator then reads freed memory. Issues #43/#44.That hazard requires a root set the scan cannot see into. The early-out skipped the pass only when the conservative stack+register scan had run — and #7558 then removed that scan from
manual_gc_collect_now, on the argument that a call is a statepoint so everything live across it is rooted by codegen. So every explicitgc()started running the pass, while the comment directly above the early-out went on naminggc()as a case that skips it.The condition now asks what the pass is actually about, "can a root-invisible register hold a live object here?", and answers no in three cases:
pressure.rsalready makes for skippingforce_full_scan;gc(), which is gc(): the forced conservative stack scan makes every retained-heap reading nondeterministic, and 16% too large on a 50 MB live set #7558's own argument.Safepoint-driven collections still run the pass. They are equally provably redundant, but the cycle has no signal for "at a safepoint" and this change does not invent one.
PERRY_GC_BLOCK_PERSIST_ALWAYS=1restores the old behaviour for bisection.#9629 — a full mark-sweep marked the remembered set as roots
For a minor that is necessary: it deliberately does not trace the old generation, so old-to-young edges genuinely are roots. A full trace visits the old generation from the real root set, so every young object a live old object points at is reached anyway.
DirtyHeaderSlotScan::newvalidates that a dirty page's header is a plausible pointer (valid_ptrs), never that it is live, so the one thing the marking added on a full cycle was the young objects reachable exclusively from dead old objects.Full traces now take the snapshot but mark nothing from it. Taking the snapshot is not optional, and that is the trap in this change:
remembered_dirty_snapshot()is what lazily arms the write barrier and reconstructs the log from the heap (barrier_arming::arm_and_reconstruct_remembered_set_if_unarmed). Skipping it as well would leave old-to-young stores unlogged, which fails in the opposite and far worse direction. The test asserts the snapshot still happened. Two existing tests changed, deliberately
root_scan_slices_remembered_set_dirty_slots_with_tiny_budgetand its dirty-old-pages sibling both drove a full cycle and asserted their children ended up marked — with an unrootedalloc_old_test_objectowner. That is precisely the retention this PR removes, asserted as if it were the contract. Their actual subject is that the subphase respects a tiny budget rather than running to completion in one step, and a minor is where that marking now lives, so both now drive a minor. The budget-slicing assertions are untouched.Verification
Each new test was checked by sabotaging its own fix:
newly_marked: 1Runtime suite green at 3063 passed / 0 failed on macOS arm64, post-rebase onto current main.
Measured effect on the real TUI, stated plainly
This is correctness and hygiene, not a large idle-memory win, and the numbers should not be oversold:
So the 13,364 figure in #9628 is a fixture result, not a TUI one. For #9629 the retention actually removed is the subset of those 2,445 reachable only from dead old objects, which the existing telemetry does not separate; everything genuinely reachable is still reached from the real roots.
The reason both are worth fixing anyway is that retention which survives a collection is now retention a user pays for: since the allocator hand-back fix, a major collection returns around 360 MB to the OS rather than nothing.
