What

Adds codec presets for the core build. PRESET selects build/presets/<name>.env, which sets the FFmpeg configure flags (FFMPEG_FLAGS), the libraries the core links (FFMPEG_LIBS) and optional extra link flags. make prd PRESET=web builds a smaller single-thread core, and make prd-mt PRESET=web the multi-thread one. The Dockerfile now reads these from the preset file instead of listing them inline. full is the default and has exactly the flags and libraries the Dockerfile had, so the published packages are unchanged.

preset contents st wasm+js gzip mt wasm+js gzip
full Today's build. The published packages keep it. 13.48 MB 11.08 MB
web The codecs and containers web video and audio use, and the encoders to produce them. No x265, theora or subtitle rendering. 4.87 MB 4.04 MB
decode Every decoder, demuxer, parser, protocol and filter. Only a few encoders and muxers for frames, audio and checksums. No encoder libraries. 9.04 MB 7.50 MB

Sizes are from CI run https://github.com/Project516/ffmpeg.wasm/actions/runs/37320991036, gzip level 9, FFmpeg n9.0.2. They are recorded in apps/website/docs/presets.md, which also documents the preset list and how to build or write one. contribution/core.md points to it instead of the old hand-edit-the-Dockerfile steps.

CI builds decode and web for both cores in a new build-preset matrix. scripts/preset-check.mjs prints each core's size as a job summary row and checks that it has the codecs its preset lists, lacks the ones it leaves out, and can run a short decode and encode. The same script runs on the full builds in build-core and build-core-mt.

No new packages. Part of #49. Closes #51.

Noticed, not fixed

  • wasm-opt -O3 in emsdk 6.0.10 aborts on the decode module (constraint.cpp assertion in approximateOr) on both cores, so decode links at -O2 through FFMPEG_LINK_FLAGS. I did not find which function triggers it. full and web link at -O3.
  • The library stages in the Dockerfile build for every preset, so a web build still compiles x265. Skipping stages per preset needs conditional COPY --from lines. The layers are cached after the first build.

Testing

CI on this PR: all four preset builds pass the check script, and build-core, build-core-mt, tests, node-tests and the FATE jobs pass on the full build.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a6990

The preset builds appear mergeable with awareness that unusual codec-list logging could cause a false CI failure; the actual logger framing remains unverified.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to a6990

Published builds retain their existing configuration and permissions. Smaller presets are opt-in, and their CI outputs do not enter the publication path. No material security risk was identified in the reviewed change.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed execution surface is the build workspace and selected local core artifacts. Optional preset jobs do not supply published artifacts, and the release workflow continues consuming only the existing full-core artifact names.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The CI injection candidate is not supported: the interpolated preset and core selectors come from literal matrix lists, with no PR-event field feeding these expressions.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Author-controlled preset contents remain inside the existing repository-build trust boundary, which already executes repository Make and shell scripts. The PR does not add publication authority to preset jobs; CI retains contents-read permission and publication remains in the separate release job.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Configure/link errors stop the Docker build before export, and full-core uploads follow successful validation. Separate preset jobs contain optional-build failures without replacing full artifacts. Local interrupted-export cleanup is not established by the repository source.

Adds codec presets (full, web, decode) that select FFmpeg configure flags and link libraries for core builds, with a CI matrix that builds and checks the smaller presets. The Dockerfile now reads these from a preset env file instead of listing them inline. I could not see the preset env files (build/presets/*.env), so I could not verify their contents, including that full is unchanged.

Not approved: the reviewer could not see enough of the change to decide.

Adds codec presets (full, web, decode) for building smaller ffmpeg.wasm cores. The Dockerfile now reads configure flags and link libraries from a preset .env file instead of hardcoding them, and CI builds the web and decode presets for both st and mt cores with a new check script that verifies codecs and runs a short decode/encode. The full preset is the default; the .env files were not shown in the diff, so their correctness rests on the passing CI runs.

This PR introduces codec presets (full, web, decode) for building smaller ffmpeg.wasm cores. Presets are defined in build/presets/*.env and selected via PRESET= at make time. The Dockerfile now sources the preset file to get FFMPEG_FLAGS, FFMPEG_LIBS, and optional FFMPEG_LINK_FLAGS. CI adds a build-preset matrix job that builds web and decode for both single-thread and multi-thread cores, then runs scripts/preset-check.mjs to verify size, component presence/absence, and basic encode/decode functionality. The published packages continue to use the full preset.

🔇 Additional comments (13)
Dockerfile (1)

215-215: Unquoted $FFMPEG_FLAGS and ${FFMPEG_LIBS} rely on word splitting.

The word splitting is intentional here, because the preset values are multi-line lists. The values contain no glob characters, so the hadolint SC2086 hints are false positives. Keep the code as it is.

Check one item: build/ffmpeg.sh uses $@ unquoted, so the multi-line FFMPEG_FLAGS string is split as intended. Keep the preset files free of * and ? characters.

Also applies to: 227-228, 232-233

build/presets/full.env (1)

Also applies to: 25-25, 31-31

scripts/preset-check.mjs (1)

30-33: Verify that the decode expectation absent list matches the preset.

decode.env does not enable libx264, libx265, libmp3lame, libvpx-vp9 or libopus. The list is consistent. Note that decode also lacks libvpx, so the native vp9 decoder carries VP9 decoding. The prores decoder is not in the web preset, and web lists it under absent. This matches --disable-everything.

.github/workflows/CI.yml (3)

134-134: Cache scope sharing can poison full cache layers.

The build-preset job reads from scope=${{ matrix.core }}, which is the same scope as build-core (scope=st) and build-core-mt (scope=mt). It does not write to the cache, so the full jobs are not poisoned. The library layers stay shared and cached, which is the intended benefit. The PRESET ARG is declared late, so only layers after it are invalidated. No change is needed.

82-84: A failing node command can be hidden by the tee pipe.

shell: bash in GitHub Actions runs with -e -o pipefail when shell: bash is set explicitly. The pipeline then returns the exit code of node. The failure propagates. This is correct.

Also applies to: 106-108, 139-141

134-134: 🔒 Security & Privacy | 🛡️ Detected with Advanced Tier

The fixed matrix values do not create a shell-injection risk.

build/presets/decode.env (1)

11-14: 🎯 Functional Correctness

No actionable failure is shown.

CI is configured to build the decode preset for both core types and run its checks. The inspected workflow does not establish the result of a particular CI run, but the comment identifies no failure or violated project requirement.

Replaces the inline FFmpeg configure flags and link libraries in the Dockerfile with preset files under build/presets/, adds a PRESET variable to the Makefile, and introduces a build-preset CI matrix job plus scripts/preset-check.mjs to verify each built core contains the codecs its preset promises. The full preset is the default and is intended to produce the same build as before.
