Part of the post-merge review of origin/main d457ebd.

What

  • Updater: the checksum comparison never matched (case mismatch), and a missing or mismatched checksum was ignored. Now a missing sidecar blocks the download, a mismatch deletes the file, the install button only appears for a verified file, and the file is re-hashed before launch. Logic moved into testable UpdateChecker/SemVer; no ambient GitHub token; SemVer prerelease handling; size caps; exact asset matching; Linux/macOS are not self-updated. A same-release checksum proves integrity, not authenticity, so an optional Authenticode signing step is added to release.yml (inactive until secrets are set).
  • release.yml: version passed via env and validated (script injection), least-privilege permissions, release waits on tests, Inno Setup pinned (6.7.1).
  • Dependabot for NuGet and Docker; Directory.Build.props (warnings as errors); installer MinVersion and optional data removal on uninstall; Flatpak audio/Discord permissions; README/CONTRIBUTING/docs drift fixed, including a table of everything EDNexus sends over the network.

Maintainer decisions

Licence (README says open-source, metainfo says proprietary, no LICENSE file); a code-signing certificate.

Verified

Build 0 warnings (Debug/Release); full dotnet test green (~35 new). YAML parsed; actionlint and Inno Setup were not available locally and the release workflow was not run. PR #167 (action SHA bumps) will conflict on uses: lines.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Windows updates are checked against the release-published SHA-256 checksum before they’re offered for installation. The installer confirmation shows the checksum and explains the installation requirements.
    • Linux Flatpak installation and update guidance is now available.
  • Improvements
    • Windows settings, logs, and downloaded updates are stored under local application data. Uninstalling always removes the update cache; interactive uninstall lets you choose whether to keep settings and logs.
  • Documentation
    • Updated platform support information clarifies that macOS is unsupported and overlay and voice callouts are Windows-only.

- Move updater logic to EDNexus.Core.Updates.UpdateChecker (injectable HttpClient) so it is testable;
AutoUpdateService is now a thin wrapper.
- Checksum sidecar match is case-insensitive; a missing/unreadable sidecar or a hash mismatch deletes
the download and never raises UpdateDownloaded. Installer is re-hashed right before it is launched.
- Download into %LOCALAPPDATA%\EDNexus\updates (not a predictable shared temp name), size-capped,
reuse an already-verified download instead of re-downloading on every launch.
- No ambient GITHUB_TOKEN, per-request headers (no UA growth / races), serialised checks.
- Proper SemVer incl. prerelease ordering; strict asset-name matching (no more Contains("win")).
- HTML fallback resolves hrefs with Uri, requires https github.com + repo/tag path, HTML-decodes,
strips query strings; also used on 403/429.
- Linux/macOS are not self-updated: only report that an update is available.
- Confirm dialog shows the verified SHA-256 and states integrity-not-authenticity; fix duplicated
update-bar text; Settings shows the self-describing check message.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request adds semantic-version handling and verified update checks, changes application update status and installation flows, and updates build and release workflows. It also documents Linux Flatpak support and changes Windows installer and Flatpak packaging settings.

Changes

Update checking and installation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Semantic version parsing and comparison
src/EDNexus.Core/Updates/SemVer.cs, tests/EDNexus.Tests/Updates/UpdateCheckerTests.cs
Adds SemVer parsing, comparison, equality, and formatting. Tests cover version ordering, prereleases, build metadata, and malformed values.
Release discovery and verified downloads
src/EDNexus.Core/Updates/UpdateChecker.cs, tests/EDNexus.Tests/Updates/UpdateCheckerTests.cs
Adds GitHub release discovery, platform-specific outcomes, checksum validation, and bounded installer downloads. Tests cover these outcomes, including release-page fallback and verified-download reuse.
Application update state and installation
src/EDNexus.App/AutoUpdateService.cs, src/EDNexus.App/ViewModels/MainWindowViewModel.cs, src/EDNexus.App/Views/*
The application delegates update checks to UpdateChecker, displays result messages and checksum details, and re-hashes the installer before launch. The update bar and settings status use the revised verification messages.

Build and release workflows

Layer / File(s) Summary
Repository build and dependency settings
.github/dependabot.yml, .github/workflows/ci.yml, Directory.Build.props, CONTRIBUTING.md
Adds weekly NuGet and Docker update schedules, read-only CI permissions, nullable and implicit-using defaults, and warning-as-error settings with NU1901–NU1904 exemptions. Contributor instructions include solution tests.
Release version validation and test gates
.github/workflows/release.yml
The release workflow validates its version input and runs solution tests before the Windows and Linux builds.
Platform build inputs and Windows signing
.github/workflows/release.yml
Pins Inno Setup, passes the validated version to platform build commands through environment variables, and optionally signs Windows installers when signing-certificate secrets are configured.

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 162cb

The remaining issues can launch an installer other than the one confirmed, clean the wrong user’s update data during uninstall, or prevent Discord presence in the Flatpak. These are bounded risks that warrant fixes or explicit acceptance before release.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 162cb

The updater and release workflow gain substantial integrity and input-validation controls. The principal introduced concern is that elevated uninstall cleanup can target a different account’s application data. Remaining file-identity, permission, and publisher-authentication limitations prevent treating update installation as fully assured.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: New elevated uninstall cleanup resolves the target through {localappdata}, without binding it to the account whose application data is being removed. When another administrator’s credentials are used for elevation, cleanup can target that administrator’s EDNexus directory instead. Confirmed recursive deletion can remove that account’s settings and logs while leaving the original user’s credential-bearing data behind. The prompt displays the resolved path and defaults to keeping data, so this is a bounded ownership concern, not an arbitrary-deletion exploit.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A party able to replace both release assets and their checksum can affect Windows consumers that download and approve installation. The supplied installer requests administrator privileges, so an approved malicious installer could affect the host rather than only the application’s per-user data. This publisher-trust exposure predates the PR; checksum enforcement narrows corruption and substitution opportunities but does not independently authenticate the publisher.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The new uninstall cleanup can cross application-data ownership when elevation uses another account: deletion resolves under the administrator’s profile, not an explicitly identified original user. Automatic deletion is limited to the update cache; deleting settings and logs additionally requires an affirmative prompt displaying the target path. Alternate-account execution was not dynamically verified.
  • inferred — A later verified-download event can change UpdatePath while installation awaits confirmation or hashing. The command can then hash captured installerPath but launch a different UpdatePath. Each published replacement path was initially checksum-verified, which limits the counterexample, but that replacement is not necessarily the confirmed or launch-time-rehashed file. Mutable-path launch existed in the base, so this is a remaining limitation rather than an established increase in attack exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The head rejects missing or unreadable checksums and mismatched downloads, uses case-insensitive digest comparison, and stores updates under per-user application data instead of the base’s temporary-directory destination. Rehashing detects changes to the captured file before the check completes, but the hash handle is closed before launch and no explicit ACL or file-identity binding is established.
  • observed — Release version text now enters scripts through environment variables and passes a character whitelist before downstream use. Default workflow permissions are read-only, with contents-write authority confined to the publishing job. These controls reduce input-to-script and release-authority exposure compared with direct version interpolation in the base.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Confirmation cancellation, missing digest, and failed rehash stop installation. Launch exceptions keep the application open; a successful launch path requests shutdown. Later non-download checks can retain an older verified offer, but the launch-time hash check rejects it if its captured file has disappeared or changed. Retention of older update state also existed in the base.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind confirmation, digest, and launch to one immutable installer identity, coordinate installation with update publication and pruning, and define protection against post-hash replacement. This would complete the new integrity guarantee without representing the pre-existing mutable-path behavior as a newly introduced vulnerability.
  • proposed — If publisher authentication is a required update guarantee, pair release signing with an explicit trusted-publisher verification policy in the updater, including certificate rotation and unsigned-release behavior. Optional signing alone does not enforce that guarantee.

…ithout the prompt

An unconditional [UninstallDelete] on {localappdata} runs against whichever profile the elevated
uninstaller resolves, which is the approving admin's when that differs from the commander. The
update cache is now removed only by the existing opt-in prompt, which shows the exact path.

Launch the installer from the re-verified path (not the observable UpdatePath); clear stale update
state when a later check does not download; explicit Flatpak Discord socket grants (Flatpak
filesystem permissions have no wildcards).
