./configure on WSL Ubuntu 24.04 kernel v6.6 fails despite having unionfs-fuse #193

Open

Description

@Forthoney

Trying to build try from the repository fails on WSL at the ./configure step because the WSL kernel does not ship with the overlayfs module. I am instead running try by installation method 1, which is just using the raw try script. This works as intended because I do have unionfs installed.

I am using a non-default WSL linux kernel from WSL2-Linux-Kernel that I compiled myself, which means I am on kernel version 6.6 instead of the default 5.11 that WSL ships with.

    Can you please give the output of ./configure and ./configure.log?

    I do not think try will work without overlayfs somewhere, even if you have unionfs.

    If you're on WSL and hitting this because the kernel doesn't ship overlayfs, sandlock might be worth a look. It doesn't rely on overlayfs or unionfs at all, its copy-on-write layer works by intercepting filesystem syscalls via seccomp, so there are no kernel module dependencies.

    cargo install sandlock-cli
    sandlock run --dry-run --workdir . -w . -r /usr -r /lib -r /bin -r /etc -- your-command

    Runs the command, shows what files would change (A=added, M=modified, D=deleted), then discards everything. Should work on WSL's default 5.11 kernel since it only needs seccomp user notification (Linux 5.9+).
