One command opens a devcontainer for any repo and branch, and drops you into a shell inside it.
dl blooop/devlaunch@fix/123No clone step, no devcontainer.json to write, no build command. dl clones the repo if it has
to, builds or starts the devcontainer, and leaves you at a prompt in the checkout. Every
repo@branch gets a container of its own, so switching branches is switching containers.
It drives devpod, which does the container work. devlaunch is the front end: one argument instead of a clone, a config file and a build command.

Exit the shell and the container keeps running. Nothing is lost between visits.

Two branches never share a working tree, an installed dependency set or a running service. A half-finished experiment on one cannot break a review on another, and you never stash to switch.
Run dl with no arguments to pick from everything you have:

you. Name the repo and it asks for the prompt while the container boots, so the two minutes are

pip install devlaunchThe wheel is linux-64 and needs glibc 2.28 or newer (Ubuntu 20.04, RHEL 8). dl and aid are
compiled binaries, so once installed they need no Python at all. Install
devpod yourself; pip does not.
The conda package has no glibc floor, so prefer it on an older distribution.

source ~/.bashrcCompletion covers workspace names, GitHub owners and repos you have used, paths, and the flags and
verbs below. It answers from a cache in about 3ms, against roughly 700ms without one. The cache
rebuilds in the background at most once an hour, and after any command that changes your
workspaces. dl --refresh rebuilds it now.

dl <user/repo> -- <command> # run one command inside the workspaceowner/repo expands to github.com/owner/repo. A name that is not owner/repo, a URL or a path
is looked up among the workspaces you have. Owner and repo match case-insensitively, the way
GitHub treats them. Branch names are case-sensitive, because git refs are.
dl <ws> -- <command> gets a terminal whenever dl has one, so htop, git rebase -i, a REPL
or a coding agent all work. Redirect the output and the terminal goes away, so
dl <ws> -- ls > files.txt stays free of escape sequences.

The search bar is the top line and the matches read downward from it, so the first match is the
row nearest what you are typing. Every cell is padded to its column, so a column starts in the
same place on every row, and the headings sit above them in the picker's header rather than among
the rows. A workspace dl did not clone has no owner or repo to read, so it keeps devpod's name
for it in the repo column and takes a dash where the owner would go. The branch is the one
checked out in the clone right now, spelled in full. Pick the row rather than copying it; the row
carries the real id underneath. Where two rows would read alike, both gain a fourth column
holding their whole id, so that picking one cannot delete the other.
For the verbs that finish on their own (up, stop, kill, rm, rme, code, dotfiles) TAB marks any
number of rows and Enter applies the verb to each, and the line above the matches says so. The
forms that end in a session (dl, -- <command>, restart, recreate, reset) take exactly
one.
A reserved verb wins over a workspace of the same name: dl stop opens the selector to stop
something rather than looking for a workspace called stop.
The selector needs a terminal. Redirect dl's input away from one and it declines to open a
selector rather than hanging or picking for you, so a script never blocks on a prompt nobody is
there to answer. docs/cli.md has the rest.

Every verb also takes the workspace second (dl stop <ws>), and with no workspace at all it
opens the selector.
rm and --rm are docker's two commands rather than two spellings of one. dl <ws> rm deletes
now; dl <ws> --rm deletes once the session ends, the way docker run --rm does. Both stop at
work that exists nowhere else: a clone with uncommitted or unpushed changes is kept and named,
and dl <ws> rm --force is how you override that.
rme is neither of those. It deletes the workspace now, as rm does, and then hangs up the
shell that asked, so the terminal tab you opened for that one workspace closes on its own
instead of waiting out the delete and then wanting an exit. A delete that refused leaves the
shell standing with the reason on screen. Which process it actually hangs up, what --force
changes about that, and why nohup is refused are in docs/cli.md.
kill is the one to reach for when a workspace stops responding and stop hangs with it. It
sweeps the host instead of asking devpod: it kills the host processes still holding the
workspace whose own parent has died, clears devpod's stale busy marker once nothing is left
building, kills any container the workspace still has running, and prints every one of them. It
never touches the lock file itself, and nothing it does waits on devpod without a deadline,
which is the point of having it.
Then it deletes the workspace. Clearing the lock is what lets devpod delete through, so the
two halves were never independently useful. That delete does not stop for work that exists
nowhere else: it names it and destroys it, which is why there is no dl <ws> kill --force to
type. It only stands down for a holder it could not clear, a live build or a process that
outlived SIGKILL, and it says which.
rm is the happy path and keeps its guard and its --force: use it whenever the workspace
might still be wanted, and kill when it is stuck and finished with. An rm that devpod cannot
get the workspace's lock for now says so while it waits, and names the kill that clears it.
docs/cli.md has the rest: what the delete asks of devpod, what stands it down,
and why kill is the one command in dl with a deadline on it.
--stop and the prune verb are retired. Both are still recognised and print what to use
instead. docs/cli.md has the full --rm contract, including which exits fire it.

--herdr-shell is not a command to type. It is what herdr's [terminal] default_shell points at,
so that splitting a pane in an aid tab opens a terminal in that workspace's container instead of
on this host. dl --install links the name and prints the config line;
docs/workspace-tools.md has the rest.
--prune, --reconcile and --purge print their plan and ask first. -y skips the question,
and for --prune and rm, --force goes ahead despite work that is nowhere else.
--force-worktrees is the separate answer for the agent git worktrees --prune finds inside a
clone, and docs/cleanup.md says what it carries one past and why it is not
--force.

.devcontainer/<name>/devcontainer.json. It is stored with the workspace, so pass it once.

--claude-profile <name> forwards a named Claude login instead of the default one, for
workspaces where you want a different account than the one claude on your host is signed in to:
dl blooop/devlaunch --claude-profile workProfiles live in ~/.claude-profiles/<name>/, or wherever CLAUDE_PROFILES_DIR points, each
holding the .credentials.json that a claude login writes. Each is a CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR of its
own, which is what makes the logins independent. dl reads that layout rather than inventing one,
so profiles you already have work with no re-login, and it never writes there: creating and
deleting them stays with whatever made the directory. By hand it is
CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR=~/.claude-profiles/work claude, then log in.
--claude-profile default means the login you would get anyway, so a recalled line has a way to
say "not the profile I used last time".
Unlike --devcontainer it is not stored with the workspace, so it applies to the launch you
typed it on and no workspace ever forwards an account chosen weeks ago. A name that holds no
credential stops the launch and says so rather than falling back to your default login, which is
the whole point of naming one. docs/workspace-tools.md has the
precedence order and what a profile does not change.
dl --help is the complete reference and is kept in step with the binary by a test.

With no prompt on the line, aid starts the container booting and asks for the prompt while it
does. Type it free of shell quoting, with no escaping and no history expansion eating a !. An
empty Enter starts the agent's plain session. Piping stdin or setting DEVLAUNCH_NO_TTY=1 skips
the question and launches one-shot, so scripts behave as they always have.

The trade, stated plainly. claude starts with --dangerously-skip-permissions, because the
agent is already inside a disposable container holding only this repo, and the per-tool prompts
would stall an unattended run. IS_SANDBOX=1 rides along because claude otherwise refuses that
flag under uid 0, and devcontainers that run as root are ordinary. That variable is scoped to
the agent process and is not exported into your shell.
The agent cannot reach your host, but it can rewrite the checkout it is in. Review an aid
workspace before pushing rather than treating it as a sandbox that will stop the agent for you.
Because the agent runs with permissions skipped and Remote Control is on by default, the
session is also drivable from the claude.ai account signed in inside the container.
DEVLAUNCH_AID_REMOTE_CONTROL=0 turns that off for every launch;
docs/cli.md has the rest.
This applies to aid starting claude and nothing else. --codex and --gemini are unaffected,
and dl <ws> -- claude runs exactly what you typed.
The agent's CLI has to be in the container already. aid runs it; it does not install it.
dl launches arbitrary repos, so none of this can depend on the image, and no repo has to add
anything to its devcontainer.json.

One workspace per branch means workspaces and clones accumulate. Three commands, and they do different jobs:

Two promises worth knowing. Nothing deletes work that exists nowhere else: a clone with
uncommitted or unpushed changes, or one git cannot read to find out, is kept and named, and
--force is what overrides that. An agent harness working inside a workspace makes its own git
worktrees under the clone, and nothing used to collect them. dl --ls --size says how much of a
clone is worktrees, and --prune reaches inside the clones it keeps to reclaim the ones that are
finished. docs/cleanup.md has the rules, the measurements, and what each
refusal is asserting. And dl does not decide which workspaces are finished,
because that is a fact about a ticket or somebody's intent. It reports what exists and what each
one holds, via dl --ls --json, and leaves the choosing to you or to a tool that knows.
Deleting a workspace takes its clone and the named Docker volumes its devcontainer created.
Images are yours: docker system df is what shows those.
docs/cleanup.md has all three in full, plus the disk accounting behind

Every switch here reads the same values: anything but empty, 0, false or no counts as
set. On a "no" variable that means turn it off; on an opt-in one it means turn it on. Eight
rows are not switches and do not follow it: DEVLAUNCH_AID_AGENT, DEVPOD_SSH_CONFIG,
CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, DEVLAUNCH_CLAUDE_PROFILES_DIR and CLAUDE_PROFILES_DIR take a value, DEVLAUNCH_TIMING counts only empty and 0 as off, so false and no
turn it on, DEVLAUNCH_AID_REMOTE_CONTROL takes 1/true/on/yes or
0/false/off/no and refuses anything else rather than guessing, and HERDR_AGENT is
the one written rather than read, so a value of your own survives only a line that starts
no agent: an aid launch names the agent it picked, and dl names one whose command is an
agent by name.
Changes to what a container gets land on devpod up, so a workspace that is already running
keeps what it was given. dl <ws> restart is what re-decides it, and dl <ws> recreate is what
re-decides a mount.

dl and aid are Rust. rust/ is what ships: one cargo workspace, and where the tests of
dl's own behaviour live.
