Description

In @clerk/electron, the main process keeps one pending OAuth flow and waits up to 3 minutes for its deep-link callback. If a user abandons the system browser tab (closes it, or changes their mind), nothing can tell the app. Every new OAuth attempt during that window fails with Clerk: an OAuth flow is already pending., so the user cannot sign in or sign up at all until the timeout expires. This happened in production in T3 Code: a user started Google sign-up, closed the browser tab, closed and reopened the sign-in modal, and every social button then did nothing.

Changes in packages/electron/src/main/oauth-transport.ts:

  • A new OAuth request now replaces the pending flow. The previous flow rejects with Clerk: OAuth flow was replaced by a new one. instead of the new request being refused. The callback timeout and deep-link handling are unchanged, and the callback resolves the newest flow.
  • The URL is validated before the pending flow is replaced, so a request with an unsupported URL cannot cancel a valid pending flow.
  • A browser launch failure only disposes the flow that launched it. Before this change, if flow B replaced flow A while shell.openExternal for A was still pending, A's later failure would reject B and clear its timeout.
  • The pending callback promise gets a rejection handler as soon as it is created. A flow replaced while its browser is still launching is rejected before its handler returns the promise, which otherwise surfaces as an unhandled rejection in the main process.

Known limitation: the callback still matches on scheme, host and path only, so it cannot be tied to the attempt that started it. Tracked in #10335.

To verify: start an OAuth sign-in in an Electron app, close the browser tab without finishing, close and reopen the sign-in modal, then pick a provider again. Before this change nothing happens and the main process logs an OAuth flow is already pending. After it, a new browser flow starts.

📝 Walkthrough

The OAuth transport now replaces an existing pending flow when a new OAuth request starts. It rejects the previous flow with a replacement error. Unsupported URLs preserve the existing pending flow. External-launch failures clean up only the flow that initiated the launch when it is still current. Tests cover replacement, unsupported URLs, launch-failure isolation, and delayed launch rejection handling. A patch changeset documents the update.

@wobsoriano (cc @jeremy-clerk), would you mind taking a look when you have a moment? This fixes Electron OAuth staying blocked for 3 minutes after a user abandons the browser tab. T3 Code currently ships the same fix as a patch (pingdotgg/t3code#22903), so landing it upstream would let them drop it. The workflows need approval to run since this is from a fork. Thanks!
