Issue being fixed or feature implemented

A block containing a signed service update could clear a local Platform ban before a later block check rejected it. EvoDB rolled back, but the ban flag, height watermark and candidate deterministic-list caches remained changed. This affects local Platform metadata; it does not make the rejected block consensus-valid.

What was done?

Apply service-update ban resets synchronously after successful active-chain tip connection, after database commit, flushing and tip update. Verification, crash rollforward and background validation do not replay these local resets. When ConnectBlock fails, roll back the block's EvoDB transaction first and then drop the candidate deterministic-list and diff caches, so public list lookups agree with rolled-back EvoDB. Rolling back first matters because other threads can read the open transaction: a concurrent lookup such as protx info could otherwise cache the candidate again after eviction. Successful service-update behavior, metadata height precedence and existing disconnect behavior remain intact.

How Has This Been Tested?

Rebased onto develop 35a115e. On macOS/arm64 (--enable-debug --enable-werror), each commit builds on its own (dashd, test_dash). All 55 evo_dip3_activation_tests cases pass, as do p2p_platform_ban.py, lint-includes.py and git diff --check.

The public-interface unit fixture platform_ban_reset_requires_successful_connection registers an EvoNode and sets a Platform ban. It then submits a service-update block with an incorrect coinbase MN-list root and checks that the tip and the ban flag/watermark are unchanged. Through GetListForBlock(rejected_index) it checks that the rejected service update is not returned and that the list equals what a fresh CDeterministicMNManager reads from the same rolled-back EvoDB. Finally it connects the valid counterpart and checks the revival. Before this rebase, the fixture reported the expected metadata and cache-state failures against baseline production code. After it, removing only the DiscardDeterministicMNBlock call makes both list assertions fail.

The rollback-before-eviction ordering was verified by reading the code; no concurrent reproduction was run. Verification, rollforward and background routing were inspected in source. No daemon crash, DKG impact, flush-failure injection or crash-recovery reproduction was performed.

Breaking Changes

Walkthrough

Platform-ban resets now run after a successful active-chain connection instead of during deterministic masternode block processing. If block connection fails, ConnectTip rolls back the EvoDB transaction and discards the block’s deterministic masternode data. A regression test checks the rejected-block and successful-connection behavior.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

At head 617cbde, deferring Platform revival until successful active-chain connection correctly prevents rejected blocks from changing local ban metadata. However, the new cache cleanup runs before EvoDB rollback, allowing a concurrent reader to restore rejected candidate state to the caches and defeating the stated cache-consistency guarantee. Verification was static only; the supplied CI snapshot shows ClangFormat passing and container builds queued, with build/test results still pending.

In `src/validation.cpp`:
- [BLOCKING] src/validation.cpp:3434: Roll back EvoDB before discarding the candidate caches
  The candidate's EvoDB writes remain readable until `dbTx` is destroyed on return, while `DiscardBlock()` releases the deterministic-manager lock immediately after eviction. A concurrent reader can repopulate the caches between those operations. For example, `protx info` obtains a block index under `cs_main` but releases that lock before calling `GetListForBlock()` (`src/rpc/evo.cpp:1795–1809`). The candidate index is available before connection, so an already-started request can enter the lookup during this window despite `ConnectTip()` holding `cs_main`. For an ordinary active chainstate, both threads resolve to the NORMAL EvoDB context; `CEvoDB::Read()` reads its still-open current transaction, and `GetListForBlockInternal()` caches the candidate diff again. Destructor rollback then clears the transaction without removing that newly cached diff, leaving subsequent public lookups returning rejected state. Explicitly roll back before eviction. The subsequent manager-lock acquisition also waits for any reader already reconstructing the candidate and removes the entries it populated.

Valid; fixed in 65fed04. ConnectTip() now calls dbTx->Rollback() before DiscardDeterministicMNBlock().

The race checks out in the source:

  • Threads other than the validation thread resolve to the default EvoDB identity, so Read() sees the candidate's open cur_transaction.
  • protx info drops cs_main before calling GetListForBlock().
  • GetListForBlockInternal() caches whatever diff or snapshot it reads.

With the rollback first, a reader holding the manager lock either finishes before eviction, so its candidate entries are erased, or starts afterwards, when the rolled-back transaction no longer holds candidate data. The destructor then does nothing.

Validation: make -j1, evo_dip3_activation_tests (all 43 cases, including platform_ban_reset_requires_successful_connection), p2p_platform_ban.py, feature_block.py and lints all pass. The ordering was verified by reading the code. No concurrent reproduction was run; that would need a test-only sync point inside ConnectTip().

Resolved (re-reviewed at 65fed043): Confirmed your fix: ConnectTip() now clears the candidate transaction under the EvoDB lock before DiscardBlock() acquires the manager lock, so readers already reconstructing candidate state finish before eviction and subsequent readers cannot reload the rolled-back writes. The scoped committer records the explicit rollback and its destructor does not repeat it; this confirmation is static, not a concurrent reproduction.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Verified the complete diff at 65fed04: Platform revival is deferred until successful active-chain connection, and rollback-before-eviction fixes the previously reported cache race. No remaining correctness blockers were found; the duplicate commit-history findings are consolidated into one non-blocking suggestion. Verification was static, and the supplied CI snapshot still shows build and validation checks queued or pending.

<commit:65fed0439c>:1

Commit 65fed04 adds only an explicit rollback and its explanatory comment immediately before the cache eviction introduced by 617cbde. It completes the rejection-state cleanup from the implementation commit rather than introducing an independent change; leaving them separate preserves an intermediate implementation with the cache-repopulation race identified during review. Fold the corrective commit into 617cbde before merge, retaining its rollback-order rationale in the combined commit message. This follows CONTRIBUTING.md's guidance on squashing fine-grained fixups and keeps the complete fix together for blame and bisect.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Independently reviewed the complete PR diff at 54c4ba3 and found no remaining in-scope defects. Platform revival now occurs only after successful active-chain connection, and rejected-block cleanup rolls back EvoDB before evicting both deterministic-list caches; the prior blocking finding is fixed and the commit-squashing suggestion is withdrawn. Verification was static only: the supplied exact-head CI snapshot shows formatting and preliminary checks passing, while container builds and title checks remain queued.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Static review of the complete diff at de97174 confirms that Platform revival is deferred until successful active-chain connection and rejected-block EvoDB writes are rolled back before cache eviction; no blocking correctness issue remains. One nonblocking regression-coverage gap remains because the fixture does not verify rejected-candidate list lookups despite the PR description claiming that comparison. No local builds or tests were run; the supplied CI snapshot shows successful completed builds, standard Linux tests and lints, with ASan/TSan tests and the multiprocess build still pending.

- [SUGGESTION] src/test/evo_deterministicmns_tests.cpp:3964-3968: Cover rejected-candidate state through the public list lookup
  The fixture checks rejection and unchanged Platform metadata, then connects the valid counterpart under a different block hash. It never calls GetListForBlock(rejected_index), so removing DiscardDeterministicMNBlock() would leave the rejected candidate's list and diff cached without any current assertion observing that stale state. Before connecting the valid counterpart, add a public list lookup that verifies the rejected service update is not returned and compares the result with a fresh CDeterministicMNManager backed by the same rolled-back EvoDB. This directly covers the cache-consistency behavior introduced by this PR without accessing private database keys or requiring a concurrent reproduction, and restores the comparison currently claimed in the PR description.

Added in the second commit (fix: roll back a rejected block's EvoDB writes before evicting its caches). Right after the rejected block is marked BLOCK_FAILED_VALID, and before the valid counterpart is connected, the fixture now:

  • calls dmnman.GetListForBlock(rejected_index) and checks the returned list does not contain the candidate's service update (the MN is either absent or its primary port is not the updated :2);
  • builds a fresh CDeterministicMNManager on the same rolled-back EvoDB and checks GetListForBlock(rejected_index) returns an identical list (operator==).

It only goes through public API: no private DB keys and no new test case.

Mutation check: with m_special_tx.DiscardDeterministicMNBlock(...) temporarily removed from ConnectTip, both new assertions fail, because the live manager keeps returning the cached candidate list with the service update:

evo_deterministicmns_tests.cpp:4915: error: check !rejected_dmn || ...GetPrimary().GetPort() != 2 has failed
evo_deterministicmns_tests.cpp:4917: error: check rejected_list == fresh_dmnman.GetListForBlock(rejected_index) has failed
*** 2 failures are detected

With the eviction restored, the case passes.

Another thread can read the open EvoDB transaction. Between evicting a
rejected candidate's masternode-list caches and the transaction rollback
in the destructor, a concurrent lookup such as protx info could read the
candidate's diff and cache it again, leaving rejected state cached after
the rollback. Roll back first, then evict under the manager lock.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

The implementation correctly rolls back EvoDB before evicting rejected-block deterministic-MN caches and defers Platform-ban resets until successful active-chain connection. The proposed crash-recovery blocker is not applicable: replay runs during LoadChainstate before mncache.dat is loaded, so the previous ProcessBlock reset could not have cleared metadata during replay either. One commit-history suggestion remains, and the queued container-build checks are still pending without any reported code failure.

Commit 99f5e80d5c1 corrects the rejection path introduced by 82c7db7db6c: the first commit leaves the EvoDB transaction open while evicting candidate caches, while the second adds the required rollback-before-eviction ordering and related assertions. Squashing the two commits would leave one logical, bisectable fix rather than retaining an intermediate implementation with the cache-race behavior.

  • Triage: normal by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — This is a cross-cutting state-management fix involving deterministic masternode metadata, EvoDB transaction rollback, cache invalidation, and block-connection lifecycle behavior, but it does not change consensus rules, funds, cryptography, networking, or storage migrations.
  • Phase 1 reviewers: muse-spark-1.3-contributor — general (completed, effort xhigh); agent phase1-reviewer
  • Phase 1 model: muse-spark-1.3-contributor — not quota-gated; passed over gemini-3.8-flash-high (antigravity quota lookup failed), glm-5.3-flash (not used above high effort; tier asks max)
  • Fresh final gate: an independent Phase-2 review ran after iterative findings were reconciled
  • Fresh verifier: gpt-6.1-sol — final-verifier; agent sol-verifier
  • Phase 2 reviewers: gpt-6.1-sol — general (completed, effort high); agent phase2-reviewer, gpt-6.1-sol — dash-core-commit-history (completed, effort high); agent phase2-reviewer, gpt-6.1-sol — general (completed, effort high); agent phase2-reviewer, gpt-6.1-sol — dash-core-commit-history (completed, effort high); agent phase2-reviewer

In `<commit:99f5e80d5c1>`:
- [SUGGESTION] <commit:99f5e80d5c1>:1: Fold the rollback-order correction into the original fix
  Commit `99f5e80d5c1` corrects the rejection path introduced by `82c7db7db6c`: the first commit leaves the EvoDB transaction open while evicting candidate caches, while the second adds the required rollback-before-eviction ordering and related assertions. Squashing the two commits would leave one logical, bisectable fix rather than retaining an intermediate implementation with the cache-race behavior.
