ci(release): keep cpu-features out of the dashmate macOS package - #5347
Conversation
The tarball mode in pack_dashmate.sh replaced the package's resolutions with a new object, which dropped the entry that skips cpu-features. Its native build then went into the macOS package, and Apple does not notarize a package with unsigned native code. Keep the existing entries, and fail the macOS build when a package holds a native binary without a Developer ID signature. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Match the Developer ID authority per line and verify the signature, fail when the scan finds no native binary at all, and fail when the build produced no .pkg to check. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Add a test that fails when the tarball mode drops the package's own resolutions. Let the package check take a directory, stop on a failing scan, and keep the rejected packages as an artifact for inspection. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Ask codesign for Apple's Developer ID requirement instead of reading its text output, which also covers every architecture of a universal binary. Reject an argument that is neither a package nor a directory, and compare the cpu-features skip with the workspace's own. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The script treats every
codesign --verifyfailure as "unsigned". Thecodesigncommand can also fail for reasons that do not relate to the Developer ID signature, such as a modified or unreadable file. The final message then says "without a valid Developer ID signature", which is still correct. But the log gives no reason for each failure. Capture thecodesignoutput for each failed file. Write it to the log, so the operator can find the cause in the rejected artifact. The stderr of
codesignis discarded here. This slows the diagnosis of a rejected package.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the supplied reviewers' clean assessments against exact head eb84371, including the final-commit changes and their packaging and release-workflow context; no actionable in-scope defects were found. Existing dependency resolutions are preserved, the native-code gate checks the Developer ID certificate requirement directly, and rejected packages are excluded from signing artifacts. This was a static verification: the supplied CI snapshot reports successful runner-contract tests and NPM release build validation, but does not demonstrate execution of the release-only macOS package check; PR Hygiene remains pending.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Independently reviewed the complete diff at f683283 and verified the supplied reviewers’ assessments; no actionable in-scope defects were found. The packaging fix preserves Dashmate’s existing cpu-features exclusion, and the macOS gate keeps rejected packages out of the normal signing artifact path while retaining them for inspection. Validation was static only: the supplied exact-head CI snapshot reports runner-contract-tests passing, but the release-only macOS gate remains unexercised in CI and other checks are pending or queued.

Basic explanation
What this does: Dashmate depends, through
ssh2, on an optional package calledcpu-featuresthat compiles native code when it is installed. We switched it off in 2023 because Apple refuses to notarize an installer with that code in it. A release fix from last week switched it back on by accident. This PR switches it off again and adds a check so that it cannot come back unnoticed.Value: The macOS installer can be notarized again. The notary login is fixed (#5344), and this file is the one thing Apple rejected in the current package. The same mistake now fails a test on the pull request, and a build that still ends up with unsigned native code stops before signing, with the list of files.
Risks: Low for the fix: one line that restores the behaviour from before #5235. The new package check runs only in the macOS leg of a release build, so its first CI run is the next release; a bug in it would cost that release its macOS installer. It was run locally on real packages (see below). No consensus impact.
Issue being fixed or feature implemented
Closes #5345.
Since #5235 the release builds Dashmate from local npm tarballs. To do that,
scripts/pack_dashmate.shwrote the tarball paths intoresolutions, but it started from an empty object, which dropped the entry that replacescpu-featureswith@favware/skip-dependency(#985).Both v5.0.0-beta.3 macOS packages therefore hold
node_modules/cpu-features/build/Release/cpufeatures.nodewith an ad-hoc signature.Apple's answer is in: the rehearsal from #5348 submitted the v5.0.0-beta.3 arm64 package and got
status: Invalidwith two issues, both on that file: "The binary is not signed with a valid Developer ID certificate" and "The signature does not include a secure timestamp". Nothing else in the package was reported. What was done?
scripts/pack_dashmate.sh: the tarball mode keeps theresolutionsthe package ships with and adds the tarball entries to them.scripts/check_dashmate_macos_pkg.sh(new): expands each.pkgand fails when a native binary does not meet Apple's Developer ID requirement, listing the files withcodesign's reason. It also fails when it finds no package, or no native binary at all. Object files are skipped, because Apple did not report the 15 that sit next tocpufeatures.node.release.yml, jobbuild-dashmate-packages: the macOS leg runs the check after packing. On a failure the packages are kept asdashmate-macos-rejected-<sha>, a name the release job does not download, so they can be inspected but are not signed..github/scripts/tests/test_dashmate_pack.py(new): runs the tarball block ofpack_dashmate.shon a sample package and fails when its resolutions are dropped. It also checks that Dashmate skipscpu-featuresthe same way the workspace does. The check does not look inside nested archives, and it leaves the hardened runtime and the timestamp to the notary service.
How Has This Been Tested?
The fix, with the 22 tarballs of the v5.0.0-beta.3 release run (
js-buildartifact) and the packeddashmate-5.0.0-beta.3.tgz, followed byyarn install --no-immutable --mode=skip-build:resolutionsentriesnode_modules/cpu-featurescpu-featurescpu-features@0.0.10, install scriptnode-gyp rebuild@favware/skip-dependency@1.2.1, no install scriptNo full
oclif pack macoswas run with the fix. The first package built with it is the next release. The check, locally on macOS with
/bin/bash3.2, about 40 s per package:cpufeatures.node, the file Apple reportedbin/nodeis the only native binaryThe tests:
python3 -m unittest discover -s .github/scripts/testspasses (65 tests, withv5.0-devmerged in).test_dashmate_pack.pyfails with the old line.actionlintpasses onrelease.yml.Breaking Changes
