docs: correct nonce validation wording - #5362
Conversation
Describe unused nonces within a bounded window and link to Identity Nonces, which explains out-of-order acceptance. Docs-only, no behavior delta. Runtime regression tests omitted because no executable code changed; checked current DPP/Drive source, the link target and anchor, and git diff --check. Independent peer approved the exact single-file diff.

Final review — Phase 1 only (trivial change)
Verified the documentation-only diff at head 377de75 against the nonce validation implementation and existing Identity Nonces documentation. The revised wording correctly describes unused, bounded-window nonces and out-of-order acceptance, and the relative link targets the correct heading; no actionable findings were supplied or identified. The supplied CI snapshot shows the book preview succeeded, runtime suites were skipped, and PR Hygiene remains pending.

Your move: coderabbitai left review threads unresolved; resolve them. |
Describe set bits as skipped, still-unused nonces, clearing on acceptance, and refusal when the missing bit is absent. Align the introductory phrase, replay example and validator sketch in Identity Nonces. Docs-only, no behavior delta. Runtime tests omitted because no executable code changed; verified DPP's missing-bit predicate and Drive's bit consumption, and ran git diff --check. Original peer approved the exact three-line successor diff. Numeric constants and window-boundary behavior are untouched.

Re-review — Final review — Phase 1 only (trivial change)
Verified the documentation-only diff at head 13a6be8 against DPP validation, both Drive nonce merge implementations, and the identity-update and batch callers. The corrected missing-bit explanation, out-of-order example, and relative link are accurate; no in-scope issues were found. The supplied CI snapshot shows the book preview passed, with one browser test job and PR Hygiene still pending; no local builds or tests were run.

Out-of-scope follow-up suggestions (1)
These are valid observations, but they are outside this PR's scope and should be handled in separate issues or author/maintainer-requested PRs rather than blocking this review.
- Nonce window boundary differs between DPP validation and Drive merge for past nonces — At the exact head, validate_identity_nonce_update in packages/rs-dpp/src/identity/identity_nonce.rs rejects past gaps greater than 24, whereas both Drive merge implementations reject gaps greater than or equal to 24. A set missing bit at distance 24 therefore passes the DPP predicate but is rejected by the merge predicate. This state is reachable: accepting nonce 2 and then 25 leaves nonce 1 marked missing at distance 24. The mismatch predates this documentation-only PR, whose changed prose does not promise an exact boundary.
- Follow-up: Track a separate consensus-versioned follow-up to establish the intended past-window boundary and align validation and merging, with regression coverage for a missing nonce exactly 24 below the tip.

Basic explanation
What this does: Corrects the book's explanation of replay protection: unused nonces can be accepted out of order within a bounded window, and set bits track skipped nonces that remain unused.
Value: Developers no longer get contradictory guidance about submitting transitions in parallel.
Risks: Low; this changes two documentation files with no behavior delta.
Issue being fixed or feature implemented
The validation-pipeline chapter incorrectly requires every nonce to be strictly greater than the last used value. Current DPP and Drive code support unused earlier values, as the identity and document chapters already explain.
What was done?
Replaced that requirement in
book/src/state-transitions/validation-pipeline.mdwith the unused-nonce and bounded-window rules, and linked to “Identity Nonces”. Corrected the linked section inbook/src/data-model/identities.md: set bits mark skipped, still-unused nonces; accepting one clears its bit, and an already-used nonce is refused. The introductory phrase, example and validator sketch now agree. The wording makes no exact window-boundary promise. Nonce validation and cache behavior are outside this documentation change. How Has This Been Tested?
Checked the explanation against
validate_identity_nonce_update, its identity-update and document-batch callers, and both Drive nonce merge paths at upstream3118b76e2cbe6498ede7e670a92cc6517d00fd7c. Verified the relative link target and heading anchor, and rangit diff --check. Independent peer review covered the exact diff. No runtime tests or local builds were run: docs-only, no behavior delta; the book preview is checked in CI.Breaking Changes
