fix(sdk): stop header sync errors from crashing the process or hiding their cause - #5697
With the published dash@8.0.1 SDK, a fresh wallet's header sync failure surfaced as Cannot read properties of null (reading 'stopReadingHistorical'), which hid the real error. In another run, one evonode with an expired TLS certificate crashed the whole Node process with an unhandled 'error' event emitted by DAPIClient.
BlockHeadersProvider.errorHandler() drops its reader before reporting the error. wallet-lib then calls stop(), which still dereferenced the reader.
DAPIClient re-emits every block headers provider error as its own 'error' event. Nothing in the SDK listens there (wallet-lib subscribes to the provider directly), and Node throws when an 'error' event has no listener.
What was done?
stop() skips the reader when the error path has already removed it. The reader stops all of its streams before it reports an error, so there is nothing left to stop. stop() still sets the state to IDLE and emits STOPPED, which wallet-lib waits for.
DAPIClient forwards provider errors only when something listens for its 'error' event, and logs them otherwise.
How Has This Been Tested?
Two new tests reproduce the exact failures seen with the published SDK (Cannot read properties of null (reading 'stopReadingHistorical') and the unhandled 'error' throw). Both fail without the fix and pass with it. The dapi-client unit and integration suites (yarn test:coverage, 355 passing) and lint pass.
Breaking Changes
None. Code that listens for DAPIClient's 'error' event still receives every error.

Walkthrough
The block header provider now handles reader cleanup during shutdown and errors. The DAPI client emits provider errors when it has an error listener; otherwise, it logs the error message and error object. Tests cover these cases.

Summary
Clean up reader activity packages/js-dapi-client/lib/BlockHeadersProvider/BlockHeadersProvider.js, packages/js-dapi-client/test/unit/BlockHeadersProvider/BlockHeadersProvider.spec.js
stop() skips reader cleanup when the reader is absent. errorHandler() stops both reader operations and destroys the reader without resetting provider state or emitting STOPPED. Unit tests cover stopping after a reader error and cleanup after a header-processing error.
Handle provider errors in the client packages/js-dapi-client/lib/DAPIClient.js, packages/js-dapi-client/test/integration/DAPIClient.spec.js
The client emits provider errors when it has an error listener. Otherwise, it logs the error message and error object. The integration test checks that emitting an error without a listener does not throw.
Header-sync errors no longer crash the client, but without an error listener or logging configuration, their cause remains invisible. Make the default fallback observable before merging, or explicitly accept that limitation.

Stop active streams before destroying the reader.
headersHandler() also calls errorHandler() when spvChain.addHeaders() or a CHAIN_UPDATED listener throws a non-SPVError. In that path, the reader’s streams can still be active. destroyReader() removes their provider listeners and loses the reference needed to stop them. The new guard then lets stop() report success while those streams continue running. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Stop the reader’s active streams before clearing the reference, including for errors raised by headersHandler().

Make the fallback report errors with default options.
The default logger level is silent, so logger.error() is a no-op unless logging is configured. With no error listener, the default client therefore discards the error instead of logging its cause. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Use a fallback that reports the error under the default configuration.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the combined reviewer evidence against exact head 0219307. Both crash fixes and their regression tests match the reported failures; one non-blocking suggestion remains to preserve diagnostic detail in the new fallback log. Current CI reports all executed build, test, and lint checks passing, including both browser suites and the platform Test Suite; only PR Hygiene remains pending.
Triage: low by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — The diff makes two small, contained JavaScript error-handling fixes—a null-reader guard during shutdown and listener-aware error forwarding—with focused regression tests.
These findings are from an automated code review. Verify each finding against the current code and only fix it if needed.
In `packages/js-dapi-client/lib/DAPIClient.js`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/js-dapi-client/lib/DAPIClient.js:89: Preserve the original error in the fallback log
When no client error listener is registered, this fallback logs only the message, discarding the original error's stack and diagnostic properties such as its transport code or cause. Those details help diagnose the header-sync failures this PR addresses. The logger forwards additional arguments to console.error, so include the error object alongside the message, matching the structured error logging already used by SimplifiedMasternodeListProvider.
… their cause
When header sync failed, BlockHeadersProvider.errorHandler() dropped the
reader and wallet-lib then called stop(), which still dereferenced it. The
caller saw "Cannot read properties of null (reading 'stopReadingHistorical')"
instead of the real error. stop() now skips the reader when the error path
already removed it.
DAPIClient also re-emitted every provider error as its own 'error' event.
Nothing in the SDK listens there (wallet-lib listens on the provider), so a
single failed stream, such as a node with an expired TLS certificate, threw an
unhandled 'error' and killed the process. It now forwards only when something
listens, and logs otherwise.

An error while handling delivered headers reached errorHandler() with the
reader's streams still running; dropping the reader left them unreachable.
Also log the whole error when nothing listens on the client.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding about errorHandler() dropping the reader while its streams run was right for errors from handling delivered headers (a non-SPV error from addHeaders() or a CHAIN_UPDATED listener). Fixed in 008d737: errorHandler() now stops the reader's historical and continuous streams before dropping it, with a test. Errors the reader reports itself already came after it stopped its streams.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the complete diff at 008d737. The changes preserve the original error, avoid unhandled DAPIClient error events, and allow shutdown after reader teardown; neither new reviewer suggestion establishes an actionable defect. Validation was static only; current CI shows the JS build, dapi-client lint and tests, wallet-lib tests, and SDK tests passing, with only PR Hygiene pending.
Triage: low by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — The diff makes small, contained JavaScript error-handling and cleanup changes with targeted regression tests and no changes to critical protocol surfaces.
These findings are from an automated code review. Verify the current code and confirm that no unresolved issues remain.
No unresolved findings remain from the prior review on this head.
…heard sync error
- stop() no longer dereferences a reader errorHandler() already dropped, as
after the new "don't connect" error (the same guard as in #5697).
- An orphan chunk that fails to connect is dropped instead of rejecting the
valid headers that connected its parent.
- Continuous sync retries before it reports, so an 'error' nobody listens to
can't stop the retry.
