fix(platform-wallet): let a shielded sync pass observe cancellation - #5743
Was stacked on #5663, which has merged; now against v5.1-dev.
A shielded sync pass had no cancellation point: ShieldedSyncManager::sync_now → NetworkShieldedCoordinator::sync ran to completion, and only the loop's sleep between passes watched the registry token. So stop() returned at once, quiesce() waited for the whole pass (10 s drain budget, then ErrorShutdownIncomplete, code 27) and destroy joined the loop for up to 37 s. On dashwallet-ios network switches that was 47 s of teardown spent waiting for a pass that nobody needed any more.
What was done?
Manager owns a pass token (manager/shielded_sync.rs): pass_cancel: Mutex<CancellationToken>, pass_token() hands each pass a child. stop() cancels the current parent and rotates in a fresh one, then cancels the loop as before. Owning it in the manager (instead of reusing the loop's registry token) makes passes dispatched from host threads (sync_now(true), sync_wallet) cancellable too, and since drain_pass calls stop() first, quiesce, clear_shielded and shutdown all cut a running pass short. The token is taken before the coordinator read, the slot CAS and the gate check, which closes the race with drain_pass's hold-then-stop order (commented in place).
Coordinator (wallet/shielded/coordinator.rs): sync(force, cancel). Bails with an empty summary if cancelled before any network work. A scan cut short returns the empty summary too (no completion event, no cooldown stamp). A stop that lands after the scan completed skips the remaining network work but still runs the store-only steps and the persister fan-out for the completed scan; the re-drive helpers take the pass token as well (they stop between records and before each new request, and the identity nonce read is dropped on cancel; a broadcast already on the wire finishes and is classified as before). A scan cut short clears the caught-up stamp (the chain may have moved past what the last completed pass saw), so the next pass walks Platform at once; only a new stamp needs an uncancelled pass.
Note scan (wallet/shielded/sync.rs): sync_notes_across is split into the network wrapper (builds the SDK stream) and sync_notes_from_stream (snapshot, write lock, consume, finalize). The consumer checks the token before the store lock, while waiting for it, and between batches (run_until_cancelled around the lock wait, a biasedselect! between batches); on cancel it drops the stream (and its up-to-16 in-flight fetches).
A scan cut short publishes nothing. It checkpoints the commitments it appended to the local tree and returns the empty result: no notes, no spent marks, no watermark, nothing to the host. The next pass re-walks from the last completed watermark; the appended leaves make it skip every append and checkpoint already made, so what a stop costs is the download and decryption of the chunks it had consumed. This is the outcome of the fix(platform-wallet): let a shielded sync pass observe cancellation #5733/fix(platform-wallet): let a shielded sync pass observe cancellation #5743 review rounds: the earlier shape (finalize and flush the consumed prefix) could not be made correct without new ledger state — a receipt in the prefix may already be spent by an action in a chunk the scan never reached, and the ledger has no way to hold such a note without offering it for selection; the same prefix also froze activity clusters, certified scan coverage the pass never completed, and resurrected spent notes on a restart replay. Each of those was fixed in turn and each fix surfaced the next; not publishing the prefix removes the whole class, and is never worse than the status quo (before this PR a stop waited for the whole pass or the app was killed mid-pass).
No host-visible type changes; ShieldedSyncPassSummary is untouched. Three test callers in balance_tests.rs and two examples pass a fresh token.
Known limits (deliberate; each is a follow-up, none a regression):
A stop that lands while the last batch is being processed is still a cut-short scan (the biased select sees the token before the stream's end), so it costs a full re-walk. One-batch window.
A cut-short scan keeps tree progress only, so a host that stops more often than one full scan takes makes no ledger progress; each later pass only downloads and decrypts, it never re-appends. A separate "scanned but unpublished" cursor could remove this later.
A broadcast the SDK is still retrying is not interrupted (only the waits between records and the nonce read are), and a pass wedged in a synchronous host persister is not either; both are bounded by the 10 s drain budget alone and surface as ErrorShutdownIncomplete, as before.
A manual sync_wallet / sync_now cut short by a concurrent stop returns Ok with nothing done, like a pass that lost the slot CAS; the FFI docs say so.
How Has This Been Tested?
New tests (RUST_MIN_STACK=4194304 cargo test -p platform-wallet --features shielded …):
wallet::shielded::sync::cancel_tests (synthetic batch stream, file-backed store): a pass cancelled between two batches returns promptly, keeps both batches appended with a checkpoint covering them (witness(7)), and publishes nothing — empty result, empty changeset, watermark and balance provenance untouched; a pre-scan cancel never builds the stream; a cancel while another writer holds the store returns without waiting for it; a cancel before the first batch leaves store and changeset untouched; the next pass re-walks from the completed watermark, appends only the new notes and checkpoints past the earlier one; a cancelled pass leaves every subwallet's watermark alone.
manager::shielded_sync::tests: stop() cancels the in-flight token and rotates a fresh one; quiesce() returns within 2 s when the pass observes its token, instead of waiting out the 10 s budget.
wallet::shielded::cancelled_scan_tests (real coordinator, mock pool spanning two or three fetch chunks with real IVK-encrypted owned receipts, a recording host persister, cancellation from the tree-progress callback after N chunks):
cancel after chunk 1 of 2: the chunk's commitments stay appended, no note, watermark, activity or host changeset, ledger RestoreIncomplete while unhydrated; the next pass re-walks (no re-append) and derives history byte-identical to an uninterrupted scan of the same pool (one Received entry of 300 with both cmxs), and the completed pass is the first thing the host sees;
cancel → persist → reopen the tree in a new coordinator → restore → hydrate: the ledger reads Ready with last_scanned_index: None and NoHistory, the reopened tree still holds the prefix, and the first pass finds the receipt the cancelled pass never reached;
receipt in chunk 0 and its spend in chunk 1, cancelled after chunk 1, restarted and cancelled again after chunk 0: the receipt never appears unspent in the ledger, in a balance or at the host; the pass that reaches the tip records it spent from the start.
The whole platform-wallet lib suite passes; cargo clippy -p platform-wallet --features shielded --tests --examples clean; platform-wallet-ffi compiles with shielded.
Not run on a device. The manual check is #5200's scenario: switch networks in dashwallet-ios while a shielded pass runs; shielded_sync_stop should return code 0 within about one batch and destroy in milliseconds.

New Features
Shielded sync can now be stopped during an in-flight pass. A cancelled, incomplete scan publishes no partial results, and the next pass resumes from the last completed checkpoint.
A stop request may time out if sync is stalled during persistence or a retry. If it times out, the pass continues and may still save data or deliver events.
Documentation
Updated guidance on shielded sync cancellation, resume behavior, and stop timeouts.
…starts
A `quiesce()` that times out latches the coordinator's `QuiesceGate`
closed so the wedged pass cannot be followed by a fresh one. Only a later
successful drain cleared that latch, and `start()` never drains: a
restart after a timed-out stop spawned a loop whose every pass bailed on
the closed gate, while the host saw `is_running() == true` and no
completion event.
`QuiesceGate::reopen_if_drained` clears the latch once the wedged pass
has released `is_syncing`, and never earlier. Each of the five
coordinators calls it in `start()` and before every loop pass, so a loop
started behind a still-running wedged pass resumes on its own the moment
that pass is gone. Live holds and the seal still close the gate.
Closes#5222.

A shielded sync pass had no cancellation point: only the loop's sleep
between passes watched the registry token, so `stop()` returned at once
but `quiesce()` waited for the whole pass (10 s, then code 27) and
`destroy` for up to 37 s on measured iOS teardowns.
The manager now owns a pass-cancellation token that `stop()` cancels and
rotates, so passes dispatched from host threads (`sync_now(true)`,
`sync_wallet`) are cancellable too. The coordinator checks it before
every network step, and the note scan selects on it between batches.
A cancelled scan drops its in-flight fetches and then finalizes the
prefix it consumed exactly as a completed pass would (checkpoint, note
saves, spend replay, watermark) and flushes that to the persisters, so
the store and the host mirror stay consistent; `quiesce` keeps its
barrier by waiting for that finalize. The caught-up cooldown is not
stamped for a cancelled pass.
Closes#5200.

…d nothing
`build_per_wallet_summary` mints an all-zero `Ok` for every registered
wallet, so the manager's `is_empty()` check could not tell a pass
cancelled before its scan from a completed one and still stamped the
timestamp and emitted a completion event. The coordinator now hands back
the empty summary when a cancelled pass consumed nothing, and the
stranded-release prefetch (a read-only RPC) is selected against the
token so a stop that lands during it does not wait the request out.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ed pass
A cancelled pass finalizes `aligned_start + scanned`, and `aligned_start`
is the union MIN watermark, so a subwallet that was already further
along could be written backwards. Finalize `max(prior, new)` and leave
an uncovered subwallet's row alone on a cancelled pass; a completed
pass keeps the unconditional write (its `ScannedThisSession` stamp
feeds the restore gate). A pass cancelled before its first batch now
records nothing, so the coordinator's empty-pass gate fires.
Take the pass token before the `is_syncing` CAS in both entry points:
a `stop()` between the CAS and `pass_token()` rotated the parent and
handed the admitted pass an uncancelled child.
Check cancellation ahead of the cooldown fast path, whose skip summary
reported one caught-up wallet for a pass that never ran.

…poll behind a wedge
A one-shot `sync_now` (or per-wallet sync) after a timed-out drain won
the slot and then bailed on the stale latch, with no loop running to
clear it. Reopen a drained latch before the slot CAS in every entry
point: a false `is_syncing` means no pass is in flight, and the gate
check after the CAS still honors a live hold or the seal.
A loop started behind a still-wedged pass slept its full interval (up
to 60 s) before noticing the pass had drained. While the latch holds,
poll the slot at `LATCHED_RETRY_INTERVAL` (1 s) instead.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…r the pass
The loop sampled the latch before awaiting `sync_now`, so a latch
raised or cleared during the pass could sleep a full interval instead
of the 1 s retry, or retry needlessly. `sync_now` already clears a
drained latch before its slot CAS, so drop the pre-pass sample and
read the latch once after the pass. Document the recovery path on the
DPNS `quiesce_within` like its siblings.

Resolves the overlap with #5564: the consumer half now checks cancellation
first, then takes the store write guard before the watermark snapshot, as
the base does, and the concurrent-sync tests pass a never-cancelled token.

Shielded sync passes now receive cancellation tokens from the manager and coordinator. Cancellation stops selected scan and redrive work. A cancelled scan checkpoints appended commitments but does not publish partial scan results or advance watermarks. Manager stop rotates its cancellation token parent.

The stream consumer checks cancellation while waiting for the store lock and between batches. A cancelled pass checkpoints appended commitments, then returns without publishing scan results or advancing watermarks. Tests cover cancellation, resumed scans, and watermark handling.
The coordinator and redrive functions accept cancellation tokens and stop selected work when cancelled. Tests cover cancellation before and during scans, restart behavior, and completed scans after cancellation.

The manager issues child tokens for sync passes and rotates its cancellation parent during stop. Manager and example calls pass tokens to the coordinator. FFI and Swift documentation describes cancellation and drain-timeout behavior.
Cancellation substantially improves sync shutdown, but stopping during a cooldown skip can still produce a misleading completion event. Mergeable with this bounded issue acknowledged for follow-up.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#5200] Requirement: a shielded pass must notice cancellation between steps, drop in-flight requests when cancellation fires, and keep quiesce's guarantee that nothing persists after it returns. Evidence from the whole-PR summary: (1) ShieldedSyncManager owns a pass token. stop() cancels it, rotates a fresh token, then cancels the loop. Host-dispatched passes (sync_now(true), sync_wallet) also take child tokens. (2) NetworkShieldedCoordinator::sync(force, cancel) returns an empty summary when cancelled before network work. (3) sync_notes_from_stream checks the token before the store lock, while waiting for it, and between batches. On cancel it drops the SDK stream and its in-flight fetches. (4) The re-drive helpers check the token between records and before each new request. The identity nonce read is cancellable. (5) is_syncing stays held through persistence, so quiesce waits for the pass to drain. Tests cover prompt return on cancel (cancel_tests), quiesce within 2 s (manager tests), and pre-scan cancel (coordinator test). Deviations, all documented by the author: a completed scan still runs its store-only steps and persister fan-out after a stop, so the state stays consistent. A broadcast already on the wire finishes. A synchronous host persister is not interrupted. These stay bounded by the 10 s drain budget and surface as ErrorShutdownIncomplete. The issue text calls these points a direction, not a hard requirement. Device timing was not measured, so the 47 s teardown figure is not re-verified here. #1168 is an app-side follow-up and is not required here.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed areas connect to #5200 cancellation or its correctness. Manager (pass token, stop rotation, child tokens) and coordinator (cancel parameter, early bail, cooldown and caught-up stamp handling) implement the cancellation points. sync.rs splits stream construction from consumption and adds cancel checks. Its watermark max-advance and clamped download progress protect the re-walk after a cut-short scan, so they support the cancellation path. operations.rs adds token checks to redrive helpers. store.rs, FFI, and Swift changes are documentation of the new cut-short behavior. The example and test call-site updates pass a token to the new signature. Tests (cancel_tests, cancelled_scan_tests, concurrent_sync_tests) verify the cancellation behavior. The Merge trait import is a small supporting change for changeset emptiness checks. No unrelated product behavior or host-visible type change is shown. ShieldedSyncPassSummary is untouched.

Check cancellation before each stranded-spend redrive.
The redrive loop reads the cancelled value once, before the loop, and never checks cancellation again. A stop during the loop still starts a broadcast for each remaining subwallet, and quiesce waits for those broadcasts. A skipped redrive is safe because the record stays armed for the next pass.

should_finalize_consumed_prefix_when_cancelled_mid_stream states that the consumed prefix is finalized like a completed pass. Its batches contain no decrypted notes, and every nullifier is 0xAA, which matches no owned note. The test checks only the scan count, tree size, watermark, and witness. The note-save and spend-replay code in sync.rs runs on the cancelled path without a cancellation gate. A regression that drops note saves or spend records on a cancelled prefix would not fail this test.
Extend the fixture so the consumed batches cover both writes:
Seed an owned note in the store. Include its nullifier in a consumed batch. Assert that the store marks the note spent and that changeset.nullifiers_spent records it.
Add a newly received note to a consumed batch's decrypted list. Assert that the changeset records the saved note.
The batch helper produces neither case, so the test needs a modified fixture or a separate helper.

…an incomplete scan
A cancelled pass flushed its consumed prefix through the completed-pass
path, which overstated what it had covered in three ways:
- the watermark setter also stamped the account as scanned this session,
so an unhydrated account could read as a ready zero balance off a
prefix that held none of its notes. The store now has a resume-only
cursor, used for cancelled passes; the scan coverage and balance
source move only when a pass reaches the tip.
- activity derivation ran over the prefix and froze a proof-height
cluster that the resumed pass could then only confirm, never extend,
permanently dropping a later note's value from history. Derivation is
deferred to the next completed pass, which derives over all notes at
once, exactly as an uninterrupted scan would.
- the post-scan re-drive helpers kept starting network requests after a
stop. They now take the pass token, stop between records and before
each new request, and drop the read-only nonce fetch on cancel; a
broadcast already on the wire still finishes and is classified as
before.
The coordinator regression drives the real coordinator against a mock
pool spanning two fetch chunks with one owned receipt each, cancels from
the tree-progress callback after the first chunk, and checks that the
resumed pass yields the same history and readiness as one uninterrupted
scan. The quiesce test takes its pass token before occupying the slot,
as the entry points do, so a preempted spawn cannot wait on a rotated
lineage.

Review follow-ups from #5733 (lklimek's correctness comment and thepastaclaw's three blocking findings) are in 7fd0e14:
Partial scan is not a completed scan.ShieldedStore::set_resume_note_index moves only the resume cursor; a cancelled pass uses it, so last_scanned_index and the ScannedThisSession source move only when a pass reaches the tip. An unhydrated account stays RestoreIncomplete after a cancelled pass.
Activity derivation is deferred on a cancelled pass. The next completed pass derives over all stored notes at once, as an uninterrupted scan would. Regression cancelled_scan_tests::should_defer_activity_and_readiness_until_a_pass_completes: real coordinator, two-chunk mock pool with one IVK-encrypted owned receipt per chunk, cancelled from the tree-progress callback after the first chunk; the resumed history is byte-identical to an uninterrupted scan (one entry of 300 with both cmxs). On the previous code it fails with a frozen 100-credit entry.
Re-drive helpers observe the token. They stop between records and before each broadcast they would start; the identity nonce read is dropped on cancel. A broadcast already on the wire still finishes and is classified as before.
The quiesce test takes its token before occupying the slot (thepastaclaw's suggestion).
Left out, stated in the description: splitting the resume cursor from scan coverage in the host persistence contract (Swift/Kotlin changeset). A restored partial cursor reads as Restored like any restored watermark; readiness there is gated by the hydration flag, and the first pass after bind completes coverage.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The cancellation and consumed-prefix finalization paths are coherent, but completed-scan provenance is lost during persistence and restoration, defeating the new invariant after restart. Two non-blocking issues remain: cancelled activity can leave a stale cooldown stamp, and the regression test does not verify persister delivery. This was static verification only; current CI shows Kotlin tests and the Swift frozen-schema check passing, with Rust workspace tests pending.
Triage: normal by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — Although intricate and cross-cutting, the diff changes cancellation, partial-scan finalization, and retry scheduling rather than funds-movement rules, coin selection, cryptography, consensus, or storage migrations.
These findings are from an automated code review. Verify each finding against the current code and only fix it if needed.
In `packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/shielded/sync.rs`:
- [BLOCKING] packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/shielded/sync.rs:790-802: Preserve partial-scan provenance across persistence and restore
The cancelled branch preserves the distinction in memory through `set_resume_note_index`, but then emits the partial cursor through the same `synced_indices` field as a completed scan. The persistence bridge writes it as `last_synced_index`, loading that row sets `has_sync_state = true`, and `FileBackedShieldedStore::restore_balance_metadata` converts it into `last_scanned_index = Some(prefix)` and `Restored` provenance. Cancel a first scan after an opaque chunk, before the wallet's first receipt, persist, and restart offline: the restored account reports zero with purported completed-scan coverage although no pass completed. The hydration flag does not prevent this: `install_shielded_views` marks hydration successful when snapshot restoration succeeds, and `local_balance_snapshot` then returns `Ready` without requiring a completed scan. The acknowledged limitation is therefore part of the invariant this change introduces, not an independent host-side enhancement. Preserve resume position and completed-scan coverage separately in the Rust-owned changeset/start-state contract and restore path, with persistence adapters round-tripping that distinction. Add a cancel → persist → reopen → restore regression with no owned notes in the cancelled prefix, asserting that completed-scan coverage remains absent until a pass completes.
In `packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/shielded/cancelled_scan_tests.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/shielded/cancelled_scan_tests.rs:242: Assert that the cancelled prefix reaches the host persister
This assertion checks the returned summary, not whether the consumed prefix was flushed. `coordinator_over` installs `NoPlatformPersistence`, and the remaining assertions inspect the coordinator's local store. Removing the cancelled-pass persister fan-out would therefore leave this test passing, even though the advanced watermark prevents subsequent passes from re-emitting the missing receipt to the host. Use a recording `PlatformWalletPersistence` implementation and assert that the first receipt and resume index reach its store callback before the cancelled sync returns, while derived activity remains absent. Apply both passes' emitted changesets to the recorded host state and verify that both receipts survive.
In `packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/shielded/coordinator.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/shielded/coordinator.rs:1599-1608: Clear a stale caught-up stamp when a cancelled pass finds activity
The outer `!cancelled` condition suppresses clearing an existing caught-up stamp as well as suppressing a new stamp. A forced pass can bypass a recent cooldown, consume new positions or newly spent nullifiers, and then be cancelled before finishing. Its activity proves the prior caught-up observation is stale, but the next background pass still takes the cooldown-skip path for the remainder of the 30-second window instead of resuming immediately. Clear the stamp whenever `any_activity` is true; only creating a new stamp should require an uncancelled pass.
Your move: thepastaclaw requested changes on this head; dismiss the review or push a fix; coderabbitai left review threads unresolved; resolve them; thepastaclaw left review threads unresolved; resolve them.
Full checklist in the description.
…watermark
The changeset watermark is what a host restores as completed-scan
coverage, and the persistence contract has no separate resume field, so
a partial cursor sent there made a restart report an account as covered
up to a position no pass ever completed. A cancelled pass now keeps its
cursor in memory only; a restart resumes from the last completed
watermark and re-walks the prefix, gate-skipped by the persisted tree.
The consumed notes and spent marks still reach the host.
Also: a cancelled pass that consumed anything clears a stale caught-up
stamp so the next background pass is not parked behind the cooldown, and
sync_wallet takes its pass token before the coordinator read, as
sync_now does.
Regressions: the coordinator test records the host changesets and
checks that the receipt arrives on the cancelled pass and no watermark
does; a second test cancels after a chunk with no owned note, persists,
reopens the tree in a new coordinator, restores from the recorded host
state and reads Ready with no coverage, then finds the receipt on the

Cover spent notes in the cancellation restore tests.
RecordingPersistence::start_state ignores nullifiers_spent, and no scenario spends an owned note. A regression that drops spend marks from a cancelled pass would still pass these tests. Add an owned-note spend to the consumed prefix, then assert that the restored state reports the note as spent.

Add a manager-level test that checks coordinator.sync receives the manager pass token.
The quiesce test takes its token from holder.pass_token() and never calls sync_now or sync_wallet. If sync_now or sync_wallet passed a fresh token to coordinator.sync, this test would still pass. Add a test that installs a coordinator, runs a controlled pass through sync_now or sync_wallet, and asserts that stop or quiesce cancels it.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
All three prior findings are fixed on head 4f9d039, but the restart replay strategy can resurrect an already-spent note when the replay is cancelled earlier than the original scan. The public Rust API changes also need breaking-change metadata and migration documentation. Verification was static only; current CI still has package determination and runner-image selection pending.
Triage: normal by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — The change is intricate and cross-cutting, but modifies sync cancellation, retry scheduling, and scan bookkeeping rather than funds-movement rules, cryptography, consensus, or storage migrations.
These findings are from an automated code review. Verify each finding against the current code and only fix it if needed.

- [BLOCKING] packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/shielded/sync.rs:800-806: Preserve spent state when replaying a cancelled prefix
Withholding the cancelled cursor makes restart replay notes that were already persisted, but receipt saving is not idempotent with respect to spentness. Scan a receipt in chunk 0 and its spending nullifier in chunk 1, then cancel before chunk 2. The host receives the receipt and spent mark without a completed watermark. After restart, restore correctly installs that note as spent, but scanning resumes before its receipt. Cancel this second scan after chunk 0: the receipt-saving code at lines 700–712 constructs `is_spent: false`, and `SubwalletState::save_note` unconditionally replaces the existing note by nullifier. Because chunk 1 was not consumed, nullifier replay cannot repair the flag. The hydrated ledger consequently includes the already-spent value in its spendable balance, `get_unspent_notes` offers it to selection, and the changeset emits an unspent replacement to the host. Preserve authoritative spent state at the Rust scan/store boundary and ensure the emitted note carries that preserved state. Add a cancel → persist → reopen/restore → earlier-cancel regression checking stored spentness, emitted deltas, balance, and selection; extend the recording host fixture to apply `nullifiers_spent` as well as note saves.

- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/shielded/coordinator.rs:1329: Mark the public Rust API changes as source-breaking
The required cancellation argument breaks existing callers of the publicly re-exported `NetworkShieldedCoordinator::sync`, and the new required `ShieldedStore::set_resume_note_index` method breaks downstream trait implementations. The PR description acknowledges both changes, but its title lacks the breaking-change marker required by the repository guidelines and PR template, and `CHANGELOG.md` contains no migration entry. Use `fix(platform-wallet)!: ...` and document both migrations under Unreleased: callers supply a cancellation token, and store implementors add a resume-only setter that leaves completed-scan coverage and balance provenance unchanged. The unchanged host ABI does not make the public Rust API source-compatible; this requires release metadata, not a PlatformVersion or GroveVersion change.
…waiting for the store lock
A pass queued behind another store writer has made no mutation yet, so a
stop that lands during the lock wait returns at once instead of after
the unrelated holder is done. Regression: hold the store write guard,
poll a scan into the wait, cancel it, and check it returns before the
guard is released with nothing appended.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the complete diff at 6dc6815: tree-only cancellation prevents partial ledger publication, and cancellation-aware store acquisition fixes the lock-wait issue; no in-scope blocker remains. Nonblocking findings concern background cancellation lineage, stale cooldown invalidation, and regression coverage for manager dispatch and post-scan cancellation. Validation was static only: current CI still has changed-package detection and runner selection pending, so Rust validation is not independently established; the supplied base-drift evidence reports no conflicting files.

Triage: critical by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — The intricate cancellation refactor changes sync_notes_from_stream in packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/shielded/sync.rs, including publication of spendable notes and spent marks and checkpoint/replay behavior that directly determines coin-selection eligibility.

- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/shielded/coordinator.rs:1431-1443: Cover late cancellation preserving a completed scan's persistence
The cancellation regressions stop before scanning or from the tree-progress callback while the consumer is still processing batches. They do not exercise the other outcome implemented here: the scan completes and advances local notes and watermarks, then cancellation arrives before the host fan-out at lines 1557–1584. An overly broad cancellation return at a later await could lose the completed changeset, and the advanced watermark could prevent its receipts from being emitted again. Add a deterministic regression that completes the real scan, parks the coordinator at a subsequent await, cancels the token, then releases the wait. Assert that the recording persister receives the completed receipts, spent marks, and watermark and that the returned summary still reports the completed scan.
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/shielded/coordinator.rs:1438-1443: Clear a stale caught-up stamp when a cancelled pass finds activity
(existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/platform/pull/5743#discussion_r4455565427)
The activity-sensitive clearing at lines 1594–1599 is correct when reached, but a cut-short scan now returns MultiSyncNotesResult::default() even after appending new commitments. This branch therefore returns before clearing an existing last_caught_up_at. A forced pass can bypass a recent cooldown, consume new activity, and be cancelled, leaving the next ordinary pass skipping the re-walk for the remainder of the 30-second window. Preserve the no-publication contract and conservatively clear the caught-up stamp on this cancelled return, or retain a separate internal activity signal. Add a regression that seeds a recent cooldown, cancels a forced pass after tree progress, and verifies that the next non-forced pass resumes immediately.
In `packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/shielded/operations.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/shielded/operations.rs:3161-3167: Cover cancellation during pending-operation re-drive
The new re-drive code intentionally treats cancellation differently across network boundaries: a pending nonce read may be dropped, but a started broadcast must finish and have its outcome handled before processing stops. All redrive_tests calls supply fresh, never-cancelled tokens, and the coordinator cancellation tests stop during the note scan before reaching these helpers. Add focused regressions that cancel a pending nonce read and assert that the durable guard remains unchanged with no broadcast, then cancel during an already-started broadcast and assert that its outcome is handled while later records remain untouched. This protects the cancellation behavior introduced here without duplicating the receipt-scan fixtures.
In `packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/manager/shielded_sync.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/manager/shielded_sync.rs:442: Keep background passes attached to their loop's cancellation generation
(existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/platform/pull/5743#discussion_r4458489443)
The background loop checks its registry token at line 274, then calls sync_now, which captures a child of the current manager parent here. If the worker is descheduled between those operations, stop() can rotate the manager parent and cancel the registry token before the old worker resumes. That worker then receives an uncancelled child and runs a full pass despite its cancelled loop generation. The drain budget bounds waiting, not execution of that escaped child; a drain can also observe the slot as free and return before the delayed worker claims it. Held and sealed gates still protect their mutation windows, so this is not a demonstrated destructive-operation bypass. Factor the pass body into a private runner accepting the captured cancellation lineage, retaining fresh children for explicit post-stop requests. Add an ordering regression; if this remains deferred, link a tracking issue covering the residual race.
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/manager/shielded_sync.rs:798-806: Exercise cancellation through a real manager-dispatched pass
(existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/platform/pull/5743#discussion_r4457970940)
The forwarding arguments in both entry points are correct on inspection, and the coordinator tests exercise the real consumer. However, this stand-in bypasses the manager-specific completion policy added at lines 489–519: an interrupted scan must not advance last_sync_unix or dispatch completion, while a completed scan must still be reported after cancellation. Neither component test covers that distinction. Reuse the mock-pool and recording-persister helpers for a focused manager-dispatched regression, checking prompt drain, unchanged timestamp and completion count, and no host ledger deltas for the cancelled scan. Also verify that an explicit subsequent pass receives a usable token. The former request to persist the consumed prefix is superseded by the publish-nothing contract.

Verdict
1 · Idea
✅ valid
Root cause: the pass itself never observed cancellation; #5200's measurements back it. Cooperative checkpoints are sturdier than dropping the coordinator.sync() future mid-batch
2 · Architecture
✅ right layer
The manager owns the pass token; coordinator and note sync only consume it. FFI / Swift / Kotlin need no code change
3 · Completeness
🟡 untracked gaps
Every entry point and drain path observes the token, and quiesce's "nothing persisted after it returns" still holds. Untracked: the test gaps below, the stale Swift docs, the loop-check → pass_token() window under a plain stop()
4 · Code
✅ clean
No blocker or major. Funds, concurrency and persistence lanes found no provable defect: a cut-short scan publishes nothing, guards and reservations are never released on cancel, broadcasts are never dropped mid-flight
Untracked gaps (please file or fold in)
No test drives cancellation through a real manager-dispatched pass: make_manager uses an empty coordinator slot, so passing &CancellationToken::new() instead of &pass_cancel at sync_wallet / sync_now, or moving pass_token() after the CAS, breaks no test.
Untested branches: late cancellation after a completed scan (cooldown else if !cancelled, stranded-release skip, host flush still happening); the redrive cancel checks in operations.rs (every test passes an uncancelled token); the sync_now early return; prior.max(new_index) on a completed pass; a non-driver subwallet whose receipt sits in a cancelled prefix.
A cut-short scan keeps a stale caught-up stamp — coordinator.rs L1438 — the early return runs before the cooldown block, so a forced pass that appended new leaves and was then stopped leaves last_caught_up_at set; a sync(false) within 30 s takes the cooldown skip and the manager announces a completed "caught up" pass. The PR body's "a cancelled pass that found activity clears a stale caught-up stamp" only holds on the completed-scan path.
Cold sync may never make ledger progress — sync.rs L682 — a cancelled pass keeps only tree leaves and leaves the watermark at its last completed value, so if the host stops more often than one full scan takes, notes and balance never appear. "Never worse than the status quo" does not hold for that cadence (before, a timed-out quiesce left the pass running to completion). Worth an issue, e.g. a separate "scanned but unpublished" cursor later. (not verified on a device)
A stop during the last batch discards a scan that reached the tip — sync.rs L488 — the biased select checks the token before the stream can yield None, so a stop that lands while the final batch is processed sets cancelled = true and drops the whole pass, contrary to "a stop that lands after the scan completed still flushes". One-batch window; cost is a full re-walk.
Re-broadcasts are not cancellable — operations.rs L3295, L3217 — by design a broadcast on the wire finishes, but one stuck in SDK retries can still push quiesce past the 10 s budget and return code 27. Worth a note in the PR body / a tracking issue.
A cancelled manual sync reports success — ffi shielded_sync.rs L724 — sync_wallet returns Ok(None) for a pass cut short by a concurrent stop, which the FFI maps to ok(); Ok(None) now means not-bound / no coordinator / pass in flight / cancelled, and the FFI doc does not mention the last. (not verified)
Infer "cut short" from a flag, not from emptiness — coordinator.rs L1438, shielded_sync.rs L495 — both checks rely on a completed scan always recording synced indices; returning the cancelled bool already computed in sync_notes_from_stream would remove the guess (and give #1 a place to clear the stamp).
Small cleanups — the mod cancel_tests doc says "the consumed prefix is finalized", the opposite of the code; the comment at coordinator.rs L1468 says both halves broadcast, but release_stranded_spends is store + persister only; the new inline crate::changeset::merge::Merge::is_empty and tokio_util::sync::CancellationToken::new() paths go against "imports at the top"; the three hand-written select! { biased; _ = cancel.cancelled() … } wrappers around read-only awaits could be cancel.run_until_cancelled(fut).
Review details
Rated critical (shielded funds, local storage). Levels 1–3 by an independent reviewer given only the PR, #5200 and the code. Level 4: a general correctness pass plus funds, concurrency and persistence lanes, and six edge-case lanes (failure injection, ordering/crash/restart, ownership and legacy data, cross-layer parity, FFI/concurrency, tests), each seeded with the earlier review threads' classes to look for siblings. Findings above were checked against the code at the reviewed head; items marked not verified were not. Static review only — nothing built or run.
…is cut short
A scan stopped mid-stream may have appended leaves the last completed
pass never saw, so leaving its stamp in place let a `sync(false)` within
the cooldown announce a "caught up" pass over a chain that had moved.
The cancelled early return now drops the stamp.
Also from the same review: the three read-only waits that observed the
token through a hand-written `biased` `select!` use
`run_until_cancelled`; the `Merge::is_empty` and `CancellationToken`
paths move to imports; the `cancel_tests` module doc and the
stranded-release comment say what the code does; the FFI `sync_wallet`
doc and the Swift stop docs describe the cancellable pass.

Re the review at 6dc6815736 — folded into 680d1619f4:
Item 1, stale caught-up stamp: the cancelled early return now clears last_caught_up_at, so the next sync(false) walks Platform at once. PR body corrected.
Item 7, cleanups: cancel_tests doc and the stranded-release comment fixed; Merge / CancellationToken paths moved to imports; the three read-only waits (lock, prefetch, nonce read) use run_until_cancelled. The batch loop keeps its select! (two outcomes).
Item 5: the FFI sync_wallet doc now names the cut-short case.
Swift docs (L325/L352/L371): rewritten for the cancellable pass.
Items 2, 3 and 4: listed under "Known limits" in the PR body; no code change here (a one-batch window, a cadence that needs a separate "scanned but unpublished" cursor, and broadcasts that are not interruptible by design).
Not taken: item 6 (a cancelled flag on MultiSyncNotesResult): the inference already depends only on a completed scan recording its indices, which the finalize does unconditionally; a new field for one gate is not worth the surface. The manager-dispatched cancellation test and the other test gaps stay declined as in the earlier rounds — the pass-level and coordinator-level cancellation tests cover the contract, and this PR has grown enough.

2 non-blocking requests
Track the Known limits — the PR body calls each one a follow-up, but there is no issue for any of them. The cold-sync one matters most: a host that stops more often than one full scan takes never gets notes or a balance. A separate "scanned but unpublished" cursor, as the body suggests, deserves its own issue.
Manager-dispatched cancellation test — make_manager still uses an empty coordinator slot, so none of the manager tests would notice if sync_now / sync_wallet passed an uncancelled token to the coordinator. An issue is fine if it stays out of this PR.
Review details
Re-review of the commit since 6dc6815736 (6 files, +56/−48), read in full against the author's reply. The earlier full chain (idea, architecture, completeness, a general pass plus funds, concurrency and persistence lanes and six edge-case lanes) was not re-run, because the new diff is small and touches only items from the last review. Note: run_until_cancelled in tokio-util 0.7.18 is biased towards the future, not the token. This is harmless for the three read-only waits it now wraps: the store-lock path keeps its is_cancelled() pre-check. Static review only: nothing built or run.
Resolves conflicts with #5743 (shielded sync cancellation), which was
written against the old design that held the store write lock across the
streamed download:
- sync_notes_from_stream keeps this branch's lock-free scan and gains the
token. A stop is observed before the scan, on the pre-scan read lock,
between batches and while waiting for an append slice, and returns the
new NoteSyncOutcome::Cancelled. It checkpoints the appended leaves only
when the store is free and the snapshot current, so a stop never queues
behind a writer; the next completed pass checkpoints anything left.
- The coordinator's sync_pass wait is cancellable, a stop after a
supersession is reported as cancelled rather than retried or failed,
and #5743's cooldown and post-scan network-step rules are kept.
- Watermarks never rewind, as in #5743.
- The pass's correction round skips notes the same round already marks
spent, so the host no longer gets a redundant second copy.
