feat(dash-spv): expose the coinbase payload of the newest validated diff - #1202
The masternode list engine keeps the coinbase payload of the highest diff it validated, and DashSpvClient::latest_coinbase() returns it. Platform can read the tip's coinbase version without fetching the block over DAPI.
A refused or interrupted QRInfo feed puts the previous coinbase back, like the lists and rotated cycles.
Truncating above a followed fork drops a coinbase above the fork.
The engine snapshot keeps the coinbase, so it is there right after a restart. The snapshot version goes to 2: a version 1 snapshot is removed and the engine syncs again (the format is unreleased, only on dev).
The SPV client can provide the latest coinbase payload confirmed by a validated masternode-list update. It may be unavailable until a payload has been validated.
The latest payload stays consistent with the active chain when updates are rolled back or a fork changes the chain history.
The payload is preserved when engine state is saved and restored, so it remains available after loading a snapshot.
The masternode list engine now tracks coinbase payloads from applied diffs. It includes the payload in rollback and snapshot state, removes it when fork truncation excludes its height, and exposes the latest payload through the SPV client.

Summary
Track payloads through engine state dash-spv/src/sml_engine.rs, dash-spv/src/sml_engine/helpers.rs, dash/src/test_utils/transaction.rs
The engine observes coinbase payloads from applied diffs. It leaves state unchanged when a payload is absent or cannot be extracted, and retains the stored payload when a candidate has a lower height. Rollback restores the prior payload. Fork truncation clears it only when its height exceeds the truncation height. Tests cover QRInfo payloads and truncation boundaries; a dummy payload constructor supports fixtures.
Persist payloads in snapshots dash-spv/src/sml_engine/snapshot_codec.rs
Snapshot version advances from 1 to 2. Encoding and decoding now include the optional latest payload.
Expose the client query dash-spv/src/client/queries.rs, dash-spv/tests/dashd_masternode/tests_sync.rs, dash-spv/tests/dashd_sync/tests_basic.rs
DashSpvClient::latest_coinbase returns a cloned payload, or None if the engine or payload is unavailable. Sync tests check the query before and after synchronization.
This change adds a client query for the latest coinbase payload, preserves it through rollback, fork truncation and snapshots, and bumps the snapshot version. No concrete merge-blocking defect remains. The two kept comments are optional hardening and API-scope suggestions for the author to consider.

Explanation
The title 'feat(dash-spv): expose the coinbase payload of the newest validated diff' matches the main change. The PR adds a public latest_coinbase() accessor on DashSpvClient that returns the coinbase payload kept for the newest validated masternode list diff. The rest of the changeset (snapshot version bump, rollback handling, truncate_above, test helpers) supports that accessor and is not the headline. The title is specific and uses the conventional commit form.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The client API, engine retention, validation result handling, QRInfo rollback, fork truncation, snapshot versioning, test helper, and synchronization tests support the coinbase observation requested by issue #1198. No unrelated change is established.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1198 requires a public verified coinbase observation with the block hash, height, and payload version. DashSpvClient::latest_coinbase() returns only Option<CoinbasePayload>. The retained payload has no public block-hash association, so the API cannot identify the verified block. The engine records the payload after validated diffs and preserves it through QRInfo rollback, fork truncation, and snapshot restore, but these changes do not satisfy the required block-hash observation.
Resolution
Expose the verified block hash together with the retained coinbase payload and its height/version in the public observation API. Preserve this association during validation, rollback, fork truncation, and snapshot restore.

The accessor docs opened with a neutral summary and warned only in their
second paragraph, so search results and hovers showed a plain "newest
coinbase" accessor. Every doc of the API (engine method, engine field,
client method) now opens with "Not secure, and temporary" and names the
verified replacement on dev, #1202.
The docs also stated the exposure too narrowly. Quorum verification does
not gate the payload: any applied diff sets it, including one from a
QRInfo the engine then rejects. And the kept payload can belong to a
lower block than the highest list when the highest diff's payload is
missing or names another height. The client doc now says it is None
after a restart until a diff is applied, since the payload is not
persisted.
Two test helpers get one-line docs.
Doc comments only, no behaviour change, so no new test.

… masternode list diff (#1204)
NOT SECURE, AND TEMPORARY. MasternodeListEngine keeps the coinbase
payload of the highest block an applied masternode list diff carried one
for, and exposes it as MasternodeListEngine::latest_coinbase() and
DashSpvClient::latest_coinbase(). Nothing authenticates it: neither the
diff's merkle proof of the coinbase nor the payload's merkle roots are
checked, and quorum verification does not gate it, so one peer can serve
a payload of its choosing. On dev, #1202 (on top of
#1200) replaces it with a version that keeps only verified coinbases,
under the same names and return types.
Platform v5.0's wallet reads the payload version to tell whether Dash
Core's V24 deployment is active (version 4 from V24), so it builds the
ProUpServTx version Core accepts for an evonode.
The payload is kept in memory only: serde skips it and the engine's
bincode Encode/Decode are hand-written with the derived layout minus the
field, so persisted engines decode unchanged. Breaking: the field is pub,
so struct literals and patterns listing every field must add it.
When this branch is reconciled with dev, drop this change rather than
port it; see the PR description for the conflict resolutions.

Moves every rust-dashcore pin from f22f7d6b to a40daba7, the head of
integration/v5.0-core-v24: dashpay/rust-dashcore#1204 merged on top of
the previous pin. It adds MasternodeListEngine::latest_coinbase() and
DashSpvClient::latest_coinbase(), the coinbase payload of the highest
block an applied masternode list diff carried, with the names and types
of dashpay/rust-dashcore#1202 on dev. The payload is not authenticated at
this revision; the verified version comes with #1202/#1200 when the pin
moves to dev, and #1204 is dropped when the integration branch is
reconciled with dev.
The engine gains an in-memory field; its serde and bincode layout is
unchanged. Nothing in Platform builds the engine as a struct literal, so
the workspace compiles unchanged. Cargo.lock moves only the rust-dashcore
git sources.

A legacy evonode's ProUpServTx must be version 3 once Dash Core's V24 is
active (bad-protx-version-disallowed) and version 2 before it
(bad-protx-version). The masternode list proves V24 only once some entry
is version 3, so the wallet also needs a signal for the window right
after activation.
V24 is now active when any list entry is version 3 or later, or when the
SPV client's latest coinbase payload (DashSpvClient::latest_coinbase,
read through the engine like the other list accessors) is version 4 or
later: Core's CheckCbTx requires that version exactly while V24 is
active. The coinbase is read only for a payload Core refuses after V24,
an evonode below version 3; regular masternodes and version-3 entries
never read it. No coinbase leaves V24 unknown and fails the build with a
retryable TransactionBuild error before any input is selected.
The coinbase is not authenticated at the pinned dash-spv: one peer
chooses it, and a lie only gets this client's transaction refused and
the wallet disconnected; no funds are at risk. The verified version
comes with dashpay/rust-dashcore#1202/#1200 when the pin moves to dev.
After a restart the session's first masternode list diff must arrive
before an evonode update can be built.
This replaces fetching the SPV tip's block over DAPI: removed
v24_active_at_spv_tip*, v24_active_at_block, the hash and merkle-root
checks and their tests, the devnet/testnet block vectors, SpvRuntime::tip
and the BLOCK_REQUEST_SETTINGS visibility change.
Tests, in update_service: with update_service_placeholder stubbed to the
shipped list-only detection (build(list_shows_v24)), these fail, and
pass after:
✖ → ✔ should_revive_a_legacy_evonode_at_version_3_after_v24_before_any_v3_entry_exists
✖ → ✔ should_read_v24_from_the_coinbase_payload_version
✖ → ✔ should_refuse_retryably_while_the_spv_client_has_no_coinbase

Thanks, Platform will switch to this from the interim #1204 on integration/v5.0-core-v24 once our pin moves to dev.
One request from the Platform side: make the value usable as current evidence, not only "the newest coinbase ever validated".
Platform's wallet reads the coinbase payload version to pick the ProUpServTx version for an evonode: from V24 Core requires coinbase v4 and refuses an evonode ProUpServTx below v3 with a consensus error, so relaying peers disconnect the client. Today latest_coinbase() keeps the highest coinbase the engine ever validated. After the client was suspended or disconnected for a while, that can still be a pre-V24 (v3) coinbase while the chain has already passed activation, and the wallet would build a v2 payload that Core refuses.
Could latest_coinbase() return None (or come with a readiness flag) unless masternode sync has caught up with the header tip — i.e. the masternodes progress is synced and its current_height has reached block_header_tip_height — and go back to None when the header tip moves past it? Then consumers get "verified and current" from dash-spv instead of combining sync_progress() with this value themselves.

Make the dummy payload consensus-encodable.
For a transaction carrying this CURRENT_VERSION payload, consensus encoding returns InvalidInput, and Transaction::txid() panics. The PR uses CoinbasePayload::dummy only to populate engine state, not in a transaction, so this is a latent test-helper hazard.

Do not return a stale coinbase as current evidence.
After the header tip advances, this returns the previous payload until masternode sync catches up. It also returns retained data after a stop or restart. Platform can therefore read a pre-V24 version as the current version.
Return None, or expose readiness, unless masternode sync is synced and has reached the header tip. Make the value unavailable again when the header tip advances. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

latest_coinbase() can return a stale coinbase as if it were current, and shumkov's request on this PR is still open. On 2026-10-21 he asked for None, or a readiness flag, until masternode sync has reached the header tip. A stale version 3 coinbase makes the wallet build an evonode ProUpServTx that Core refuses, and the relaying peers then ban the client. DashSpvClient::latest_coinbase (dash-spv/src/client/queries.rs:68) still returns the engine's value with no condition. Since 5e79f78f the snapshot also restores it in PersistentMasternodeStorage::open, so right after a restart it returns the coinbase from before the restart, which is exactly the case he described. Under the interim #1204 it was None after a restart. Please gate it on masternode progress being Synced with current_height() >= block_header_tip_height(), or return the payload together with that readiness, and reply to his comment. One more thing for the doc: Core checks a mempool ProUpServTx with V24 evaluated for the next block (validation.cpp:1113), but the tip's CbTx with V24 evaluated for the tip itself (validation.cpp:2879, cbtx.cpp:47-50). At the activation boundary the tip coinbase is therefore still version 3 while the new rules already apply, so even a current coinbase is one block late there.
Nothing tests the rollback, the snapshot encoding or the "higher block wins" rule. I removed the self.engine.latest_coinbase = latest_coinbase line in QRInfoRollback::drop, encoded None in place of self.latest_coinbase in the snapshot Encode, and dropped the latest.height > payload.height early return in observe_coinbase_if_higher, all at once. cargo test -p dash-spv --lib -- sml_engine storage::masternode still gives 63 passed; 0 failed. Here is why each one goes unnoticed:
a_refused_qr_info_leaves_the_engine_as_it_was runs on the validating 2518986 fixture. Without the rollback it is left holding Some(2518552) after the refusal, but it never asserts on latest_coinbase.
The 2240504 rollback tests and every engine in a_snapshot_restores_the_lists_cycles_and_their_sharing are built with TestEngine::knowing, which turns validation off, so they never keep a coinbase at all.
Please add:
a latest_coinbase assertion to the refused-QRInfo test;
a snapshot fixture engine with a version 4 Some coinbase, which also exercises the merkle_root_asset_unlocks branch;
a test where a lower diff arrives after a higher one;
a client-level test of DashSpvClient::latest_coinbase: None with masternode sync off, None on a fresh engine, and the kept payload once the engine has one. The interim #1204 had this as latest_coinbase_reports_what_the_masternode_list_engine_kept in dash-spv/src/client/mod.rs, but that only exists on v0.45.0, not on dev. It also set the engine's field directly, which dash-spv's now private latest_coinbase field does not allow from client, so the engine needs to get its coinbase through a fed diff or a test helper.
On point 1: I'm not gating latest_coinbase(). Like tip_header() and latest_masternode_list(), it reports what the client holds, and none of the client queries check whether sync has reached the tip. Gating only this one would be inconsistent, and doing it for all of them isn't what this PR is for.
The readiness is already public on dev: DashSpvClient::progress() gives masternodes(), with state(), current_height() and block_header_tip_height(). @shumkov, Platform can check that before reading the coinbase:
let progress = client.progress().await;let current = progress.masternodes().is_ok_and(|m| {
m.state() == SyncState::Synced && m.current_height() >= m.block_header_tip_height()});
Point 2 is done: the tests are pushed, with the client cases as assertions in the dashd tests.

Restore version 1 snapshots on upgrade.
The version check now rejects every version 1 snapshot. PersistentMasternodeStorage::read_snapshot deletes the file on that error, so existing clients lose their stored lists and quorums until network resynchronization completes. Decode version 1 with latest_coinbase = None, and retain strict version checks. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Code
latest_coinbase ignores a coinbase of a newer payload version, so it sticks on the old version when Core ships one. observe_coinbase_if_higher (dash-spv/src/sml_engine.rs:1201) parses with to_coinbase_payload(), which rejects the RawPayloadType a newer version decodes to, while validate_coinbase_roots accepts it through CoinbasePayload::from_coinbase_tx. On the 2518986 fixture, observing with_newer_coinbase_payload() of the tip coinbase leaves latest_coinbase at version 3 instead of 5. Use coinbase_tx.as_ref().and_then(CoinbasePayload::from_coinbase_tx) and add that case to a_lower_diff_leaves_the_newer_coinbase.
The branch fails clippy once dev is merged in.
After #1320all_zeros is an inherent function, so use dashcore::hashes::Hash; in the snapshot_codec.rs tests (line 403) is unused and cargo clippy -p dash-spv --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings stops with unused import: dashcore::hashes::Hash. The merge itself has no conflict, so GitHub does not flag it. Please merge dev and drop the import, which makes clippy clean.
CoinbasePayload::dummy builds a payload that cannot be serialized.
It is version 3 with best_cl_height, best_cl_signature and asset_locked_amount left None, so consensus_encode returns best_cl_height is not set and serialize panics. It also makes with_newer_coinbase_payload panic, which item 1's test needs. Set them to Some(0), Some(BLSSignature::from([0; 96])) and Some(0), which encodes to 175 bytes and round trips.
Docs
The DashSpvClient::latest_coinbase doc does not say when the value is missing or stale.
It says None only "while masternode sync is off or has validated none yet", but truncate_above also clears it after a followed fork, and the snapshot restores the pre-restart value on startup with no check against the tip. Since you are not gating it, say both in the doc and point to the readiness check you posted: progress().masternodes() with state() == SyncState::Synced and current_height() >= block_header_tip_height().
The doc should warn that even a current tip coinbase is one block late at V24 activation.
Core checks a mempool ProUpServTx with V24 evaluated for the next block (validation.cpp:1114), but the tip's CbTx with V24 evaluated for the tip itself (validation.cpp:2879, cbtx.cpp:47-50). So on the last block before activation the coinbase is still version 3 while Core already refuses an evonode ProUpServTx below version 3. One sentence on latest_coinbase is enough so Platform does not read the version as the rule for the next block.
Waiting for bot review — coderabbitai not yet. Wait for the missing reviews, or a writer can post /skip-bots to proceed without them; blocking findings still need addressing.

Order coinbase observations by the proved block height.
If a diff’s coinbase payload names a height different from diff_end_height, this comparison uses the payload height as proof of recency. The existing proof and root checks do not compare those heights. A payload that names a far-future height can therefore remain the “latest” observation after later, valid diffs arrive. Check payload.height == diff_end_height before storing it, and use the verified block height for ordering. (github.com)
