Confidence Score: 0/5The PR is not safe to merge until snapshot path containment, malformed-file handling, layout validation, and tombstone metadata restoration are corrected. Layer inputs can escape the configured root during content reads, malformed snapshots can trigger dangerous allocation behavior on supported 32-bit targets or violate lookup ordering assumptions, and revived entries retain stale metadata; the explicit comment-length requirement is also unmet. Files Needing Attention: crates/fff-core/src/index/snapshot.rs, crates/fff-core/src/file_picker/layer_ops.rs, crates/fff-c/src/layers.rs, packages/fff-node/src/ffi.ts, packages/fff-bun/src/ffi.ts

|---|---|
| crates/fff-core/src/index/snapshot.rs | Adds the persistent layer format and path normalization, with missing traversal/layout validation and an unsafe 32-bit allocation calculation. |

normalize_relative_path accepts .. components, and snapshot deserialization does not perform equivalent path validation. A caller can add or load a path such as ../outside.txt; grep and content indexing then resolve it relative to the configured root and can read a file outside that root. Reject parent-directory components during normalization and validate every deserialized path before constructing the snapshot.
How this was verified: Stored layer paths are passed directly to root-relative openat or concatenated with the base path without a containment check.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
The loader trusts the serialized SnapshotLayout tag without checking that files and directories satisfy its ordering and partition rules. A malformed or externally generated file marked Sorted or BasePartitioned is installed without the required sort. Exact-path lookups then binary-search unordered ranges and can report that indexed files do not exist. Validate the advertised layout or restore the required ordering when loading.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
On supported 32-bit targets, the attacker-controlled chunk_count * SIMD_CHUNK_BYTES calculation can overflow before Cursor::take checks the input length. A tiny malformed layer file can therefore bypass the truncation check and reach Vec::with_capacity(chunk_count), potentially aborting the process through a multi-gigabyte allocation. Use checked multiplication and bound the allocation by the bytes actually remaining.
How this was verified: The untrusted 32-bit header count is multiplied before bounds validation and is subsequently used directly as the arena allocation capacity.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Re-adding a tombstoned path ignores the new IndexEntry metadata because the existing-path branch only clears the deletion flag and immediately continues. If a caller removes a layered entry and later adds the same path with a new size, modification time, or binary classification, the revived result retains stale attributes and can be filtered or indexed incorrectly. Apply the incoming metadata when revival succeeds.

Newlines Corrupt Layer Batches
The native parser does not verify that the number of newline-delimited records equals count. Because both JavaScript wrappers join caller-provided paths without rejecting embedded newlines, one logical entry can become multiple indexed paths, shift metadata onto the wrong records, and make the returned added count exceed the input length. Reject embedded delimiters or validate the parsed record count before reading positional metadata.

Comments Exceed Required Length
This new API comment spans six lines, violating the repository directive that comments must not exceed two lines unless explicitly requested. The same pattern appears on fff_layer_list, fff_layer_add_paths, fff_layer_build, and fff_base_load. Condense these comments or move the extended details to external documentation. This repository requirement must be satisfied before merging.

Make duplicate metadata deterministic.
par_sort_unstable_by can reorder equal paths. The following dedup_by then keeps arbitrary metadata when duplicate entries have different size, modified, or binary values.

Preserve ignore rules during snapshot restoration.
FileSync::from_snapshot sets ignore_rules to None. commit_new_sync only adopts explicit overlays. With no repository, IgnoreFilter then uses only the non-code-directory heuristic, so .ignore paths can reach handle_create_or_modify after loadBase.

Reserve the scan before releasing the picker lock.
ScanJob::new_rescan only checks scanning and then releases the lock. Two concurrent import_base calls can both pass this check before either spawn call sets scanning. Both jobs can then call commit_new_sync, which replaces the current snapshot without a generation check. One snapshot can overwrite the other nondeterministically.
Reserve the scan atomically in new_rescan, or serialize the check through spawn.

Check layer.ok before reading layer.value.
createLayer returns the strict discriminated type { ok: true; value: number } | { ok: false; error: string }. TypeScript rejects layer.value until layer.ok narrows the union. The README is not included in the package typecheck, so this error is not caught automatically.
const layer = finder.createLayer("generated");
+if (!layer.ok) throw new Error(layer.error);

createLayer and finder.saveLayer to check layer.ok before accessing layer.value,
handling the unsuccessful result via its error field and only saving the layer
value in the successful branch.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Unvalidated \n in path corrupts the layer batch in both encoders. The wire format is newline-delimited and metadata is matched by split position on the Rust side (entries_from_raw in crates/fff-c/src/layers.rs). One entry with an embedded newline becomes two native paths and shifts size/modified for every entry after it.

Require successful scan completion before continuing.
fff_wait_for_scan returns 1 only when scanning completes and 0 on timeout. Bun maps 0 to { ok: true, value: false }. The three callers ignore value, so they can query a partial index.
Check both ok and value at all three sites. The cited wrappers do not guarantee completion.

Assert scan completion.
A timeout returns { ok: true, value: false }. open() ignores this value, and the second wait checks only ok. loadBase starts the scan in the background, so later searches can use an incomplete index. Assert that both waits return value === true.
