[gh-aw-upgrade] gh-aw upgrade available: v0.45.1 → v0.45.4 #91

Closed as not planned

Description

@github-actions

A new version of gh-aw is available. We are currently on v0.45.1, latest is v0.45.4.

Upgrade Assessment

Urgency: Informational — no breaking changes affect our workflows, but picking up bug fixes and the AWF firewall update is worthwhile.

Relevant Changes

v0.45.2

Breaking Changes

  • infer: false renamed to disable-model-invocation: true: We do not use infer: false in any workflow, so this does not affect us.

Bug Fixes

  • Playwright MCP on GitHub Actions (#16262): Fixed initialization failures for browser automation on runners. Not currently relevant to our workflows.
  • MCP Tool JSON Output (#16261): Fixed audit MCP tool returning debug logs instead of clean JSON.

New Features Worth Adopting

  • GitHub Copilot Compatibility (#16259): user-invokable added as ignored frontmatter field, enabling gh-aw workflows to work as GitHub Copilot custom agents. Could be useful if we want to expose workflows as Copilot agents in the future.

Architecture

  • Prompt Generation (#16209): Moved to activation job with artifact transfer — improves workflow structure and debuggability.

Security

  • AWF Firewall updated to v0.19.1 (#16256): Improved security and stability for the Agent Workflow Firewall.

v0.45.3

No changes relevant to our workflows. Internal maintenance release focused on lint fixes, content moderation automation, and legacy code removal.

v0.45.4

New Features Worth Adopting

  • Cross-Repository PR Creation (#16293): The assign-to-agent safe output now supports a pull-request-repo parameter, allowing workflows to create PRs in different repositories. Could be useful for future cross-repo automation patterns.
  • Pregenerated Expression Validation (#16277): Expression access patterns are now pregenerated at compile time, eliminating expensive runtime validation. This should improve compilation performance.
  • WebAssembly Compiler (#16289): The compiler now compiles to WebAssembly for browser-based usage. Not directly useful for CI-based compilation but indicates platform maturation.

Upgrade Steps

  • Update GH_AW_VERSION in Makefile from v0.45.1 to v0.45.4
  • Run make compile and verify 0 errors, 0 warnings
  • Verify compiled lock files are correct and workflows behave as expected
