🏥 CI Failureactions/checkout@v6 breaking change blocks all agentic workflows #566

Closed as not planned

Description

@github-actions

Summary

Critical: All 13 agentic workflows are failing due to a breaking API change in actions/checkout@v6 that no longer accepts the depth parameter. The parameter must be renamed to fetch-depth.

Failure Details

  • Run ID: 21806350203
  • Workflow: CI Doctor (ci-doctor.lock.yml)
  • Commit: f84db28
  • Date: 2026-02-08T22:16:46Z

Error Message

Unexpected input(s) 'depth', valid inputs are ['repository', 'ref', 'token',
'ssh-key', 'ssh-known-hosts', 'ssh-strict', 'ssh-user', 'persist-credentials',
'path', 'clean', 'filter', 'sparse-checkout', 'sparse-checkout-cone-mode',
'fetch-depth', 'fetch-tags', 'show-progress', 'lfs', 'submodules',
'set-safe-directory', 'github-server-url']

Root Cause

The compiled .lock.yml files contain depth: 1 instead of fetch-depth: 1 when using actions/checkout@v6.

Example from ci-doctor.lock.yml (lines 132-137):

- name: Checkout .github and .agents folders
  uses: actions/checkout@8e8c483db84b4bee98b60c0593521ed34d9990e8 # v6
  with:
    sparse-checkout: |
      .github
      .agents
    depth: 1 # ❌ INVALID - should be fetch-depth: 1
    persist-credentials: false

Impact

13 workflows affected (all fail at checkout before agent logic runs):

  1. ci-cd-gaps-assessment.lock.yml
  2. ci-doctor.lock.yml
  3. cli-flag-consistency-checker.lock.yml
  4. dependency-security-monitor.lock.yml
  5. doc-maintainer.lock.yml
  6. issue-duplication-detector.lock.yml
  7. issue-monster.lock.yml
  8. pelis-agent-factory-advisor.lock.yml
  9. plan.lock.yml
  10. security-guard.lock.yml
  11. security-review.lock.yml
  12. test-coverage-improver.lock.yml
  13. update-release-notes.lock.yml

Note: The source .md workflow files do NOT contain depth: - this parameter is being added by the gh-aw compiler during workflow generation.

Solution Options

Option 1: Update gh-aw Compiler (Recommended)

The gh-aw tool is generating depth: when it should generate fetch-depth: for checkout@v6. This needs to be fixed in the gh-aw repository.

Option 2: Manual Fix (Temporary Workaround)

Manually edit all 13 .lock.yml files and replace:

- depth: 1
+ fetch-depth: 1

Warning: Manual edits will be overwritten when workflows are recompiled.

Option 3: Downgrade to checkout@v5

If gh-aw cannot be updated immediately, temporarily pin to actions/checkout@v5 which still supports depth:.

Related Issues

  • This is the third consecutive failure of the same issue:
    • Run 21798063417 (same commit, documented in cache-memory)
    • Run 21797542457 (same commit)
    • Run 21806350203 (this run)

Recommended Actions

  1. Immediate: File issue with gh-aw team to update checkout parameter generation
  2. Short-term: Apply manual fix to unblock workflows (Option 2)
  3. Long-term: Update gh-aw dependency once fixed

Priority

🔴 CRITICAL - Complete blockage of all agentic workflows
