📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe PR replaces pipeline-slot stream sets with one persistent AICPU/AICore stream pair per runner. Stream creation moves from preparation to launch. A new thread-safe lifecycle type manages submission, polling, retirement, stale AICore replacement, teardown, and abandonment. ChangesRunner-wide stream pair migration
Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to This refactor routes runs through a shared stream pair, but callable publication can race with run reservation and submission, allowing execution to use a stream that has already been invalidated; this could cause runtime failures or incorrect execution, so merge should wait for synchronization or an explicit ownership contract. The counter is already 0 at Line 499, because the failure injected at Line 491 was consumed by the
ensure()at Line 492, sofail_next_creates(0)changes nothing. The comment also describes oneensure()in which the AICPU stream is created and the AICore stream fails. The code does not exercise that path: Line 500 creates both streams, Line 502 retires only the AICore stream, and theensure()at Line 504 creates the AICore stream alone. If you want the half-ready path inside a singleensure(), add a failure mode that fails the second create of a call.🛠️ Proposed comment and call fix

A prepared successor that fails after preparation reaches cleanup_execution with an unproven retirement, which under a shared pair would otherwise destroy the live stream; the pair records its submitter and ignores anyone else. Readiness is gated on "a run still owns the pair" rather than on the previous run having completed, so a handle that survives a failed teardown stays stale and is replaced by the next launch instead of locking a reused runner out. The two streams stay distinct: the AICPU Run kernel spins in the handshake waiting for the AICore workers, so one queue would leave the AICore submission behind a spin that can never end. Follow-up to #1807, which merged reuse of a completed AICore stream between code publications. That removed the reason the streams were indexed by pipeline slot, so this deletes the indexing.
Summary
A stream is an ordered queue and the execution claim (
try_acquire_native_run) is exclusive, so runs reach the device one at a time. A pipeline slot indexes the resources preparation mutates — arena banks, hostRuntimebuffers, retained temporaries — and preparing a run writes nothing to a stream; only launch submits.Per-slot stream sets were required only while every run created its own AICore stream, because a prepared successor then held a second live stream alongside its predecessor's. With reuse keyed on publication that requirement is gone, so
RunStreamSlotscollapses toRunStreamPair: one pair, no slot index. a2a3 converges toward what a5 already does —device_runner_base.hnotes that a5 submits runs on the persistent bootstrap pair while "A2A3 reserves these for bootstrap/control operations and submits runs on its own per-slot stream sets".The two streams stay distinct. The AICPU Run kernel spins in the handshake waiting for the AICore workers, so collapsing both onto one queue would leave the AICore submission behind a spin that can never end.
Two constraints a shared pair needs that per-slot did not
The pair is readied by launch, not by preparation. Launch is the first point the caller holds the execution claim. A prepared successor overlaps its predecessor's execution, so replacing a stale AICore stream during preparation would destroy a stream the predecessor is still running on.
Only the run that submitted the pair may retire it. A prepared successor that fails after preparation reaches
cleanup_executionwith an unproven retirement — which under a shared pair would destroy the predecessor's live stream. The pair records its submitter (thePreparedExecution, matching the opaque-owner conventiontry_acquire_native_runalready uses) and ignores anyone else.ANonSubmittingOwnerRetiresNothingpins this.Readiness is also gated on "a run still owns the pair" rather than on the previous run having completed, so a handle that survives a failed teardown stays stale and is replaced by the next launch instead of locking a reused runner out.
Observable change
run_stream_set_create_countnow advances once per code publication rather than once per publication per slot, and preparation no longer advances it at all. The scene-test and lifecycle assertions move accordingly.Validation

Early in development, before the 11 clean sweeps, two full-suite runs on this branch failed with an AICore UB out-of-bounds →
507018→sched_error_code=100, the signature of #1489. I could not attribute them and I have no mechanism to offer.resolve_block_dim()returning the runner-lifetimemax_block_dim_, every run takes the whole device, so a full-device stream's creation covers every core and there are no uncovered cores to leave stale.I am not claiming the branch caused them, and not claiming it is clear. If reviewers want the loaded-box case covered before merge, reproducing it needs either a co-tenant load or monopolising the box; I did not do the latter on shared hardware. Details are on #1489.
