Summary

A task carrying set_predicate() recorded into a Graph marked the whole recording unsupported (graph_record_submit_node), which fails the orchestration because the outer shell is already in the task/dependency sequence by then.

The blocker was representational, not semantic: submit resolves a predicate into an absolute GM address (operand.tensor->buffer.addr + flat_offset * elem_size), and a Definition is replayed against buffers that move every invocation.

Fix: record the operand the way a tensor arg is recorded — its classified source plus the element index within it — and let materialize rebind the tensor for the execution and scale the pair into an address.

Layer Change
Record (pto_orchestrator.cpp, both arches) Drop the unsupported gate; classify the operand tensor and pre-compute Σ idx·stride; reject an unclassifiable operand or one that resolves to the node's own output
Definition wire (graph_execution.h) New GraphPredicate section + predicate_count / off_predicates. GraphNodeDefinition points at it through the two bytes it was already padding with, as a one-based slot so a zeroed node definition stays predicate-free
Materialize (graph_execution.cpp) Replace the unconditional payload.predicate = DispatchPredicate{} with a per-execution resolve, fully range-checked (pass() memcpys elem_size bytes, so the address must land inside the operand's own buffer)
Dispatch / completion No change. An expanded node routes through push_ready_routed like any other task, so a failed predicate lands in the dummy queue, retires inline, and still resolves its fanout

The four-way rebind that the materialize loop ran inline for tensor args is extracted into graph_rebind_tensor(), so the predicate operand resolves through the same checks instead of a second copy of them.

The predicate creates no dependency, exactly as on the ordinary path — DepInputs only ever consumed arg tensors and explicit deps, and predicate resolution runs after fanin computation. Classification here exists only to name the address' base. The caller still declares the dependency on the operand's producer, and the recorder captures it through the existing explicit-dep path.

Testing

  • graph_predicated_dispatch (new): one Graph invoked three times, each invocation with its own gate buffer and gate scalar, holding two predicated tasks whose operands come from the two different sources (boundary tensor / Graph-internal tensor). The three invocations land on three distinct output values, so a replay reusing the recorded operand address would read the recording invocation's gates and fail. Verified failing on the parent commit.
  • predicated_dispatch ported to a5 — the scene existed only under tests/st/a2a3, so a5's predicate evaluation had no coverage at all.
  • a2a3sim / a5sim: new and existing host_build_graph scenes pass.
  • a2a3 onboard (via task-submit): both predicate scenes pass.
  • ut-cpp: 107/107, including the graph cache / activation / submit-failure suites — unchanged, and passing without editing any UT (that is what the one-based slot buys).

Notes

GRAPH_EXECUTION.md moves dispatch predicates out of the unsupported list, documents how the operand is carried, and records the two new rejection cases. sizeof(GraphNodeDefinition) is unchanged at 72 B, so the Definition size and heap arithmetic in the Graph design notes do not move.

While writing the scene I hit a pre-existing, unrelated gap: graph_record_submit_node derives fanin only from INTERNAL-classified tensor sources plus explicit deps and never consults the TensorMap, so two nodes inside one Graph body that both add_inout() the same boundary tensor get no edge — while the ordinary path builds one via compute_task_fanin. The scene declares those edges explicitly. Worth its own issue.

Graph recording now captures dispatch predicates as serialized tensor-source metadata. Graph materialization rebinds and resolves predicates for each replay. A5 and A2A3 scene tests cover boundary and internal predicate operands.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4634f

The change enables graph predicates to be rebound per execution, but out-of-range predicate operands are still accepted during recording and can trigger a scheduler-fatal failure later instead of being rejected at submission. Merge should wait for record-time bounds validation or explicit owner acceptance of this behavior.

The a2a3 and a5 graph_predicated_dispatch scenes duplicate identical sources. The orchestration files and the kernel_clobber_alt.cpp kernels are byte-identical across the two platforms, so every future change must be applied twice. Use a named sentinel for the PredicateOp range check.

PredicateOp currently defines NONE = 0, EQ, NE, GT, LT, GE, and LE = 6. This check depends on LE remaining last. Add an explicit count or last-value sentinel, or validate supported operations with a switch.

@coderabbitai Addressed the review body's two nitpicks:

graph_execution.cpp — PredicateOp range check. Fixed. graph_predicate_resolve now enumerates the operators in a switch over PredicateOp with no default, so adding an operator is a -Wswitch build warning here rather than a value that slips past a > LE bound and reaches pass(), which reads an unrecognized code as "always dispatch".

a2a3 / a5 scene duplication — skipping. The parallel arch trees are the established layout, not an oversight: tests/st/{a2a3,a5}/host_build_graph/graph_execution/kernels/orchestration/graph_execution_orch.cpp is already byte-identical across the two today, as are the vector_example and dump_args scenes. Cross-directory kernel references in this repo stay within one arch tree (a5 scenes reach across runtimes, e.g. ../../tensormap_and_ringbuffer/..., and across sibling scenes, e.g. ../vector_example/...), and no a5 scene references tests/st/a2a3. Making this one scene the sole exception would break that boundary for two small files, so per .claude/rules/discipline.md §2 (match local style) it follows the surrounding convention instead. Worth revisiting as a tree-wide decision, not in this PR.

@ChaoZheng109, the exhaustive switch resolves the PredicateOp validation concern.

I withdraw the a2a3/a5 scene-duplication nitpick. The per-architecture scene layout is established, and a cross-architecture reference would violate the local convention. A tree-wide consolidation decision should be separate from PR #1912.

Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for that tree-wide review?

CI note: ut (macos-latest, 3.10) failed on the last push with a single test, OrchestratorFaninTest.SubmitPathHeapDeadlockLogReportsRingAndRealHeapState (tests/ut/cpp/a5/test_orchestrator_fanin.cpp:282) — the assertion that the log names "oldest task owned by an open scope on this ring".

Not from this change: that test covers the a5 tensormap_and_ringbuffer orchestrator's heap-deadlock classification, while this PR touches only host_build_graph (graph_execution.{h,cpp} plus the Graph recording block in both pto_orchestrator.cpp). The same job passed on the previous push of this branch, and #1914 — open right now — fixes exactly this assertion, describing the same failure mode: on a 3-core macos-latest runner under ctest -j the servicing thread misses the ~490 ms window, so the allocator falls back to the timeout classification instead of the provable-deadlock one.

The other 17 checks are green, including st-onboard-a2a3, st-onboard-a5, ut-a2a3, ut-a5, and both sim lanes. Locally the full ctest -LE requires_hardware set is 107/107 on this exact commit. Re-run requested; it should go green once #1914 lands.

Addressed the four review points; all folded into the single commit.

1. materialize now refuses an OWN_OUTPUT operand. Fixed — graph_execution.cpp rejects operand_source.source == OWN_OUTPUT before the rebind. Agreed on the asymmetry: OWN_OUTPUT is legitimate for a tensor arg and never for an operand, and every other image-contributed field in that file was range-checked.

Chasing it surfaced a second, reachable half of the same defect. Recording gated on args.predicate(), but submit_dummy_task and alloc_tensors deliberately do not set has_predicate ("a kernel-less node never dispatches"). So a predicate on a dummy node inside a Graph recorded predicate_slot != 0 against has_predicate() == false — and the consistency check rejected the whole Definition on the device, for a value the scheduler was never going to read. Recording now gates on the node's own attribute, so the two halves cannot disagree by construction and the ordinary path's semantics carry over unchanged.

2. Doc. Fixed — the extent rejection is now the third entry in GRAPH_EXECUTION.md's record-time list.

3. BOUNDARY_VIEW coverage. Added, and it is the branch worth the effort as you said. The scene grew a fourth predicated task: the consumer is predicated on a view of the boundary gate (gate[4..]) indexed at element 1, so its address stacks a boundary base + a view offset + an element offset. Only gate[5] carries the deciding value and gate[0] drives the BOUNDARY_EXACT predicate, so dropping any one of the three reads an element that is 0 in every invocation. Verified by mutation: deleting + ref.packed_offset from the view rebind fails the scene (y0 reads INIT instead of 42.0). The scene is now four invocations, one per outcome.

4. Coverage for the three refusals — added, but the premise needs a correction. These are not graceful fallbacks to the eager path. They are record-time-discovered constructs, and by design the outer shell is already in the task and dependency sequence when they are found, so there is nothing to fall back to. The repo states this in two places: GRAPH_EXECUTION.md ("assert in debug builds and fail the orchestration in release builds") and the existing HbgGraphSubmitFailureTest.AbortedRecordingLatchesFatalAtCommit, whose comment spells out why. I confirmed it empirically earlier: running the new scene against the parent commit fails the run outright.

So the tests assert the contract that actually holds — graph_end() refuses to publish, graph_commit() latches a fatal — in tests/ut/cpp/common/test_hbg_graph_submit_failure.cpp (compiled for both arches): out-of-extent operand index, unclassifiable operand, and the dropped kernel-less predicate (which asserts the opposite: recording stays publishable and no fatal). Both new refusals mutation-checked: removing the extent check fails the first, reverting the attribute gate fails the third.

The unclassifiable-operand case had no dedicated test before; it does now.

Verification: a2a3sim / a5sim scenes pass, a2a3 onboard passes via task-submit, ctest -LE requires_hardware is 107/107.

A predicated task recorded into a Graph marked the whole recording
unsupported, so the orchestration failed once the outer shell was already in
the task sequence. The blocker was representational: submit resolves a
predicate into an absolute GM address, and a Definition is replayed against
buffers that move every invocation.

Record the operand the way a tensor arg is recorded instead -- its classified
source plus the element index within it -- and let materialize rebind the
tensor for the execution and scale the pair into an address. GraphPredicate
carries that on the wire; GraphNodeDefinition points at it through the two
bytes it was already padding with, as a one-based slot so a zeroed node
definition stays predicate-free. The four-way rebind the materialize loop ran
inline for tensor args becomes graph_rebind_tensor(), so the operand resolves
through the same checks rather than a second copy of them.

Nothing on the dispatch side changes: an expanded node routes through
push_ready_routed like any other task, so a failed predicate lands in the
dummy queue, retires inline, and still resolves its fanout.

The predicate creates no dependency here, exactly as on the ordinary path --
the caller declares one on the operand's producer. Classification runs only to
name the address' base. Recording refuses what a replay could not honor: an
operand that classifies as the node's own output or not at all, and an index
vector that leaves the operand's extent -- the last on the host, where it is a
named unsupported construct, rather than on the device where materialize would
surface it as a Scheduler fatal. Recording reads the node's own predicate
attribute rather than the caller's args, so a kernel-less node drops the
predicate here exactly as submit_dummy_task and alloc_tensors drop it on the
ordinary path, and the two halves of a node definition cannot disagree.
Materialize re-checks every field the image contributes, including the operand
source, and enumerates the comparison operators so that adding one warns at
build time instead of reaching pass(), which reads an unknown code as "always
dispatch".

The new graph_predicated_dispatch scene invokes one Graph four times with a
per-invocation gate buffer and gate scalar, holding three predicated tasks that
cover all three operand sources. The consumer's operand is a view of the
boundary gate indexed at element 1, the one address that stacks a boundary
base, a view offset and an element offset; only that element carries its value,
so dropping any one of the three reads an element that is zero everywhere.
Each invocation lands on a distinct pair of outputs, so a replay that reused
the recorded operand address would collapse them onto the recording
invocation's. Unit tests cover the three recording refusals and the dropped
kernel-less predicate, asserting the contract AbortedRecordingLatchesFatalAtCommit
states: a shell already in the task sequence cannot be answered by re-running
the body, so graph_end() refuses to publish and the commit latches a fatal.
predicated_dispatch also gains an a5 copy: the scene existed only under
tests/st/a2a3, leaving the a5 scheduler's predicate evaluation with no coverage
at all.
