Problem

#2063 introduced the A5 HBG dependency-to-Ready layer. Review of that layer
found several contracts that should be closed before the single-lane
dispatch/completion work in #2072 builds further on Ready routing: resolver
bounds were wider than the allocated Ready directory, owner state was optional
on owner-only operations, and malformed task shapes could reach metadata arrays
before validation.

Changes

Harden Ready ownership and bounds

  • Bound inbox, directory, claim, and bootstrap operations by Resolver capacity,
and reject zero or oversized Resolver counts.
  • Require Resolver-local owner state for Ready publication, claims, and
completion wakeups; only the owner can promote its pending bank.
  • Add the bootstrap publication barrier and keep the victim cursor under one
    writer after each steal attempt.
  • Remove the unreachable unpublished-link wait protocol. Bounded CAS contention
is reported as a give-up statistic while preserving the scheduler worker wire
    layout.

Reject malformed scheduler metadata early

  • Return an invalid sentinel for zero- or multi-bit single-subtask masks and
validate it before indexing kernel metadata.
  • Reject unknown dispatch target core types, core-type mismatches, invalid
callables, and generation-zero wraparound through stable scheduler errors.
  • Reject malformed completion waiter shapes before indexing Ready batches and
report the dedicated completion error site.
  • Compile the Ready helpers through the A5 AICore executor so device-side
compilation covers the header used by the production A5 path.

Correctness and scope

  • The effective diff is confined to src/a5/runtime/host_build_graph and its
    A5 C++ unit test.
  • Shared HBG predicate validation and the A2/A3 regression tests remain
    unchanged from main.
  • Scheduler worker layout size and offsets remain unchanged.
  • This PR does not switch the production scheduler entry path or add Gang
scheduling; those remain outside this corrective change.

Reviewer guide

  • Verify the mandatory owner-state path preserves published-before-pending FIFO
order and that only the owner promotes its pending bank.
  • Check every Resolver index against SCHEDULER_RESOLVER_CAPACITY, especially
    bootstrap publication and shard traversal.
  • Check dispatch/completion shape validation occurs before metadata indexing
and that all failure paths avoid partial publication.
  • Confirm the effective diff contains no common or A2/A3 changes.

Testing

  • Changed-file pre-commit: all hooks passed.
  • Full non-hardware C++ build and CTest: 126/126 passed.
  • Targeted A5 HBG Ready unit test: 31/31 passed.
  • Shared HBG submit-poison unit test: 3/3 passed.
  • Editable package/CCEC build completed successfully.
  • A5 simulator HBG scenes: 12 passed, 279 deselected.
  • Scope audit: exactly four A5 files differ from main.
  • GitHub CI: all required checks passed, including A5 onboard.
  • A5 onboard hardware testing was not run locally.

Review Change Stack

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The PR changes scheduler ready-queue capacity handling, requires owner-state inputs, bounds contention retries, updates stealing, and adds shape validation. It also initializes ordinary task predicates inline and expands scheduler tests for these behaviors.

Changes

Scheduler ready-queue changes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolver capacity and scheduler contracts
src/a5/runtime/host_build_graph/runtime/scheduler/scheduler_types.h, src/a5/runtime/host_build_graph/runtime/scheduler/scheduler_ready.h, src/a5/runtime/host_build_graph/aicore/aicore_executor.cpp
The scheduler adds resolver-capacity contracts, updates ready-owner layout sizing and statistics, adds COMPLETION_INVALID_SHAPE, validates single-subtask masks, and includes the ready-queue header.
Owner-queue publication and contention
src/a5/runtime/host_build_graph/runtime/scheduler/scheduler_ready.h, tests/ut/cpp/a5/test_hbg_scheduler_ready.cpp
Ready publication now requires initialized owner state, validates resolver-local indices, always uses the owner queue, and records bounded CAS contention. Tests use layout-backed owner states and cover invalid owner and capacity inputs.
Claim and shard stealing
src/a5/runtime/host_build_graph/runtime/scheduler/scheduler_ready.h, tests/ut/cpp/a5/test_hbg_scheduler_ready.cpp
Claim validation now checks resolver and core-type bounds. Shard stealing no longer updates a victim cursor internally. Shard, FIFO, and concurrency tests pass the required owner states.
Dispatch and completion shape validation
src/a5/runtime/host_build_graph/runtime/scheduler/scheduler_ready.h, tests/ut/cpp/a5/test_hbg_scheduler_ready.cpp
Dispatch and completion reject invalid subtask shapes before metadata indexing or ready-batch insertion. Tests cover invalid shapes, core-type mismatch, generation wrap, invalid callables, and completion handling.

Ordinary predicate setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Inline predicate payload initialization
src/common/host_build_graph/shared/orchestrator.cpp, tests/ut/cpp/a5/test_hbg_scheduler_ready.cpp
Ordinary submission now computes valid predicate payload fields inline and clears invalid or absent predicates. Predicate tests cover six operators and four element sizes.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 7896c

Malformed predicate metadata can still produce out-of-bounds reads, and unknown target core types can be routed to an invalid dispatch target. These are high-impact correctness risks, so the PR is not merge-ready until both validations are enforced before publication or dispatch.

Poem

A rabbit checks the ready queue bright
Owner states guide each task in flight
Bounds keep resolver paths in line
Shapes reject the masks that misalign
Predicates hop through fields just right
And tests glow softly through the night

- Bound Ready directory operations by resolver capacity and require local
owner state for publication, claims, and completion wakeups.
- Reject malformed dispatch and completion metadata, including unknown
target core types, before indexing or publishing scheduler state.
- Remove unreachable link-wait handling and expose bounded contention in
scheduler statistics while preserving the wire layout.
- Compile Ready helpers through A5 executors and expand A5 regression
coverage without changing common or A2/A3 behavior.

@coderabbitai Addressed both actionable findings:

  • Unknown dispatch target core types are rejected before normalization and covered by an A5 regression test.
  • The common predicate validator and A2/A3 regression tests remain unchanged from main; this PR now has an A5-only effective diff.

The docstring coverage warning is not addressed because these C++ helpers follow the repository invariant-only comment policy, and all required documentation and pre-commit checks pass.

@zhusy54 Confirmed.

  • scheduler_fill_dispatch_slot rejects an unknown target->core_type before scheduler_core_type_index can normalize it.
  • SchedulerDispatch.RejectsUnknownTargetCoreType covers the rejection path.
  • src/common/host_build_graph/shared/orchestrator.cpp and tests/ut/cpp/a2a3/test_hbg_submit_poison.cpp have no effective diff from main. This preserves the shared predicate-validation contract described in the retrieved repository learning.
  • I accept the invariant-only comment policy for these C++ helpers. No documentation change is required for this warning.

Learning: For `src/common/host_build_graph/shared/orchestrator.cpp`, shared dispatch-predicate validation must remain in the ordinary submission path before task allocation and publication. The validation rejects invalid predicate operators, operand metadata, element sizes, indices, and buffer bounds. The A2/A3 predicate regression tests protect this contract.
