perf(npc): make main-menu npc prefab pre-registration linear - #374
I linked an issue opened before this PR, or explained an allowed exception above.
I checked existing issues and PRs for duplicate or overlapping work.
This PR addresses one focused problem or request.
Summary
Main-menu NPC pre-registration batches FishNet additions and reuses movement/dialogue lookups for the duration of the pass. This removes the repeated full-prefab initialization and loaded-object scans that made large custom NPC packs increasingly expensive to register.
Append NPC prefabs and supplier delivery vehicles in discovery order with one AddObjects(list, false) call. Fall back to duplicate-aware individual registration if the batch throws.
Keep lookup caches scoped to the pre-registration pass, with cleanup in finally. Calls outside the pass retain their existing path.
Keep the ordered queue and fallback loop in the internal SpawnablePrefabBatch<TPrefab> helper so their behavior can be tested without constructing Unity or IL2CPP objects in a standalone test host.
Put routine registration timing behind verbose/debug logging. Failure warnings remain visible, without redundant [S1API] prefixes; counts describe spawnable prefabs because they include vehicles.
The contributor's original commits are preserved. The maintainer follow-up adds regression tests and logging cleanup, and merges current stable, including #376, without rewriting history.
Compatibility
No public/protected API changes; the helper and integration points are internal.
Registration order, case-sensitive name deduplication, prefab IDs, and duplicate-aware fallback semantics are preserved. Immediate registrations outside a batch are unchanged. After a batch and individual fallback both fail, a later cached NPC lookup retries that failed registration with native duplicate checking; failure state is cleared only after success.
Lookup caches end with the pass and are not retained across sessions.
No save formats, stable identifiers, or network payloads change.
Routine success timing is now visible only with verbose logging enabled. Failure diagnostics remain warnings.
Both builds retain two existing xUnit analyzer warnings in RecyclerContractTests.
Eight new managed regression tests cover mixed NPC/vehicle ordering, existing and pending duplicates, case sensitivity, empty batches, ordered fallback, partial-append recovery, continuation after an individual failure, and independent passes.
Four additional regression tests cover retention after batch/fallback failure, repeated retry failure, partial-append recovery, and no retry for successful or differently cased names.
git diff --check passed.
Live Mono and IL2CPP checks used game 0.4.7f12 (Alternate for Mono), isolated installs containing only S1API and a disposable probe, and copies of a completed-game save. Both reached controllable gameplay beyond intro/character creation. Checks passed for:
Ordered append and matching FishNet prefab IDs, duplicate names, nested batch ownership, repeated flush, and immediate registration outside a batch.
An intentionally injected failure after the first native append, followed by recovery without duplicates or reordering.
Nested dialogue lookup-cache lifetime and reset after the outer batch ends.
A real supplier delivery vehicle created between two queued prefabs, remaining in discovery order with the expected IDs.
Custom NPCs and supplier delivery-prefab readiness after save load.
On the combined branch, first and delayed reload reads retaining saved relationship delta 1.25 despite a configured default of 4.0; explicit zero and omitted defaults remain intact.
The original PR head was also checked in both runtimes before the follow-up. Real custom NPC prefab IDs were 124–127 and the supplier vehicle ID was 128 in both the immediate-registration comparison and batched runs. These checks prove local registration and loaded-save behavior; no two-peer co-op or large-pack performance rerun was performed. No smoke sources, logs, saves, assemblies, or generated game artifacts are committed.
Review follow-up: failed cached registrations
The linked retry finding was reproduced on both runtimes at c09b7a5: injected batch and individual failures were followed by a cached NPC lookup that made no registration attempt. The follow-up passes menu-scoped runtime probes on Mono and IL2CPP for failure before append and failure after partial append: repeated failure remains eligible, later success registers exactly once with a valid prefab ID, and later cache hits do not register again. This new probe does not load a save; the loaded-save evidence above remains from the earlier reviewed version. No public API, save, or network format changes.

Walkthrough
NPC pre-registration now batches spawnable prefab additions and reuses movement and dialogue lookup results during the registration pass. Supplier vehicle registration uses the same ordered registration path. The pass flushes a prefab batch in finally when it starts that batch.

Summary
NPC data lookup caching S1API/Internal/Entities/NPCDataAccess.cs
Nested lookup batches reuse movement donor and dialogue database results, including null. The outermost batch end clears both caches.
Prefab registration queues unique names and attempts one batch addition. If batch registration fails, it tries each prefab separately and continues after individual failures. NPC pre-registration and supplier vehicle registration use the shared registration path. Tests cover ordering, duplicate and case-sensitive names, empty batches, failures, and batch isolation.
An NPC whose registration fails may remain unavailable for network spawning until the process restarts. Add a retry path before merging.

Explanation
Issue #373 requests internal batching of NPC prefab registration in discovery order and pass-scoped caching of movement and dialogue lookups. PreRegisterAllNpcPrefabsInternal starts both batches and cleans them up in finally. SpawnablePrefabBatch preserves order, uses ordinal name matching, submits one batch registration, and performs duplicate-aware individual fallback after failure. Supplier delivery vehicles use the same queue. NPCDataAccess caches movement and dialogue results, including no-result cases, until the outer lookup batch ends. The added tests cover ordering, duplicate handling, fallback recovery, empty batches, and pass isolation.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files support issue #373. SpawnablePrefabBatch and its tests isolate and verify the required queue and fallback behavior. The supplier vehicle registration hook preserves discovery order and prefab IDs. Logging changes report batch registration behavior. NPCDataAccess changes implement the required lookup-cache lifetime. No unrelated public API, save format, or network payload changes appear in the reviewed diff.

A supplier delivery vehicle created while an NPC prefab is built was added
to SpawnablePrefabs directly, ahead of the NPC prefabs still queued in the
pre-registration batch, which shifted their FishNet prefab ids. Queue it in
the same batch so the ids match registering one at a time.
build-il2cpp and documentation fail before the build, in the assembly verify step: the game assemblies folder is empty.
A PR from a fork gets no secrets, so it can only use the game-assemblies-v4-main-* cache from stable. The last workflow run on stable was on 2026-10-19, and GitHub evicts a cache after 7 days without use. The only caches left are two empty ones from this PR's runs (281 and 306 bytes).
A manual run of the IL2CPP Build Check and the docs workflow on stable refills the cache. After that, a re-run here should get past this step.
Extract the existing ordered queue and fallback loop into an internal managed helper for regression coverage. Keep native registration behavior unchanged and move routine timing to debug logging with accurate prefab terminology.

Review follow-up: the registration retry finding is fixed in e20826b (details and dual-runtime reproduction in its inline thread). The earlier supplier-ordering finding remains addressed by d8bc35e and the subsequent real-vehicle runtime checks. The earlier empty assembly-cache report is also addressed: both build-il2cpp and documentation passed on c09b7a5 before this follow-up. The bot docstring warning is not applicable as a repository gate: CODING_STANDARDS.md requires summaries for modder-facing APIs, and AGENTS.md defines the 80% gate over aggregate public DocFX API coverage. These changes are internal; adding comments to private helpers and test methods solely to meet a separate touched-function metric would not satisfy a missing public contract. Hosted checks for the new head are being verified separately.
