feat: ship a packaged macOS menu bar companion with release assets #386

Closed as not planned

Area

Installation or packaging

What are you trying to accomplish?

I need a lightweight macOS menu bar companion for OpenCodex so I can see whether the local proxy is running, inspect basic health/status at a glance, and open common actions without leaving the menu bar.

What prevents this today?

Today OpenCodex status is mainly available through the CLI and dashboard. On macOS there is no packaged companion app that sits in the menu bar, surfaces structured proxy health, or ships as a release asset alongside npm publishes.

What should OpenCodex do?

When I install or update OpenCodex on macOS, I should be able to:

  1. Run a native menu bar companion named OpenCodex
  2. See proxy running/health status from the menu bar
  3. Expand details for richer status without changing the fixed menu width
  4. Download a packaged .zip + checksum from the GitHub Release created by the existing Release workflow

The companion should stay ad-hoc signed for now and document the first-launch Gatekeeper approval path.

Example usage or interface

# local build
bun run build:macos-app

# packaged release asset on GitHub Releases
OpenCodex-<version>-macos-universal.zip
OpenCodex-<version>-macos-universal.zip.sha256

Menu bar UX:

  • top row shows Proxy running without dimming
  • details below are collapsible
  • fixed menu width (280)
  • app/menu-bar icons from existing repo assets

Release flow should stay on the existing jawcode-style path:

  • only main / preview
  • dry-run first
  • attach macOS assets when creating the GitHub Release

Alternatives or workarounds

  • Keep using ocx status --json / the dashboard
  • Build the Swift app locally with scripts/build-macos-app.sh and never ship it

Those work, but they do not give a packaged macOS companion or release-time distribution.

Additional context

Branch with the proposed implementation: feat/menubar-app on jaycho46/opencodex, rebased onto current upstream/dev.

Included pieces:

  • native Swift menu bar app under apps/macos-menu-bar
  • structured proxy health metadata from ocx status --json
  • docs for the companion
  • Release workflow packaging via scripts/package-macos-release.sh

Checks

  • I searched existing issues and documentation.
  • This request describes a concrete OpenCodex workflow rather than merely naming a desired technology.
  • I removed secrets and personal data.

Implementation is now tracked in PR #387. We will keep this issue open until the companion's runtime status contract, packaging/release changes, and macOS verification are reviewed and the release artifacts are proven in CI. The issue should close with the verified merge rather than from the presence of the PR alone.

Closing: the macOS menu bar companion is being handled as an internal implementation by the maintainer, outside this public tracker. The earlier attempt (#387) closed unmerged and no public successor is planned here. If a public release-asset variant becomes relevant again, this can be reopened.
