Summary

Carries #6379 by @luvs01 onto a maintainer branch and adds one maintainer hardening commit. The original commits are kept as they are, with their authors.

What #6379 fixes. A managed service could pick a recorded runtime from the serving-runtime census without proving that the live service-manager definition belongs to the same OpenCodex and Codex homes. Census delegation is now bound to that definition, and it is refused on missing, ambiguous, or mismatched identity evidence before any candidate is probed or launched. The systemd writer's quoted home assignments are decoded (escaped percent signs, backslashes, line continuations) in src/service/systemd-env.ts. A cheap spawn-free check skips the manager probe when the census has no newer candidate.

Maintainer hardening: c7c4b98f2e "fix(service): bind WinSW registration to its definition before census delegation". WinSW registration is a machine-wide SCM fact, while the WinSW definition is read from the current config directory. The delegation gate now accepts a WinSW claim only when trusted System32 sc.exe qc reports that claim's own executable as the registered BINARY_PATH_NAME. A failed query, a missing value, or a mismatch refuses delegation, so the child serves from its own runtime as before. Other backends, ocx status, and the other inspection callers are unchanged. The BINARY_PATH_NAME parser and comparer are pure exported helpers with unit tests (quoted with arguments, unquoted, case, slashes, mismatch, missing line), and gate tests cover a matching binary, a different binary, a failed query, and a non-WinSW claim that never queries.

Carried from #6379. Original author: @luvs01.

Verification

  • I did not run local test suites or typecheck, on the project owner's explicit instruction. This is separate from the AGENTS.md resource exception. Hosted CI at the exact head of this PR is the only execution evidence, including the windows-schtasks, linux-systemd and macos-launchd service legs.
  • fix(codex): verify service manager identity before census delegation #6379's head 1d75b0267c passed full hosted Cross-platform CI before the carry. This branch is that head plus c7c4b98f2e. git merge-tree --write-tree origin/dev HEAD is clean.
  • Static checks run locally: git diff --check, bun run scripts/privacy-scan.ts, bun run structure:check pass. The touched files are not in tests/fixtures/file-size-baseline.json.
  • Not verified on a real Windows host: an install whose SCM entry records an 8.3 short path or a path through a symlinked config directory would fail the comparison and simply not delegate.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. A MAINTAINERS.md security review is requested for the service-identity gate. An independent verdict bound to the exact head will be posted before merge.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Service-manager checks now verify that a registered service matches the current installation before reporting ownership or delegating work to a newer runtime.
    • Linux service definitions with ambiguous or malformed home settings are now reported as unknown rather than producing potentially incorrect ownership results.
    • macOS service home values with XML-escaped characters are now interpreted correctly.
  • Documentation
    • Updated service and sidecar guidance to reflect stricter ownership checks and Linux service-definition parsing.

…d homes

Three review findings: a service claim that omits its home keys now only authorizes a process still resolving its default homes, so a project .env cannot borrow a default installs registration for a project-chosen census directory; launchd environment values are XML-decoded so an escaped home still compares equal to itself; and the manager-definition provenance probe is gated on a recorded newer candidate so an empty census no longer pays a full Task Scheduler listing.

… delegation

The census delegation gate now accepts a WinSW claim only when trusted System32 sc.exe qc reports the claim's own executable as the registered BINARY_PATH_NAME. Query failure, a missing value, or a mismatch refuses delegation. Other backends and other inspection callers are unchanged.

Walkthrough

Service-manager probes now validate systemd home assignments and decode launchd XML entities. Runtime delegation requires a newer recorded runtime and an installed service that matches the current homes. WinSW ownership checks also compare the registered executable with the claimed definition.

Changes

Service Definition Probes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Systemd home parsing and probe validation
src/service/systemd-env.ts, src/service-manager-probe.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-systemd-env-probe.test.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-service-manager-probe.test.ts, structure/ops/service-and-sidecars.md, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
Systemd probes use the new parser to read home assignments and return unknown for invalid or ambiguous definitions. Tests cover supported values, malformed definitions, online and offline probes, and XML-escaped launchd values. The new systemd test is registered in the test layout.
Runtime delegation ownership checks
src/config/serving-runtimes.ts, src/service-manager-probe.ts, tests/config/serving-runtimes.test.ts, structure/ops/service-and-sidecars.md
Delegation checks for a newer trusted recorded runtime and installed-service ownership of the current homes. WinSW claims additionally require sc.exe qc output that identifies the claimed definition executable.

Systemd services with home overrides can authorize delegation using another installation's definition. Bind the ownership claim to the loaded service fragment before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c7c4b

The change narrows service delegation rather than expanding execution authority. However, Linux loaded-definition identity and service changes during a handoff remain incompletely established, so the assessment is not minimal risk.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A selected runtime executes with the launching service process's inherited environment and authority, so the relevant exposure includes its homes and other resources accessible to that principal. Machine-wide SCM registration is an identity input, not an elevation operation. The evidence does not establish the production Windows account or its maximum privileges.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The deferred systemd candidate identifies a plausible residual false-ownership path: live registration can be combined with homes parsed from a different effective definition. Staleness rejection and strict parsing do not establish loaded-definition identity. This is not a verified attack path or an established PR regression: the mismatch predates the maintainer commit, the supplied earlier behavior allowed less-restricted delegation, and concrete attacker reachability remains unresolved.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Service markers are not accepted as sufficient authority for census execution. Candidate paths must be absolute files and, on POSIX, owned by the current UID and not group- or world-writable; candidate versions are independently probed. The Windows branch does not perform equivalent ownership or ACL checks in this helper, so its trust guarantee cannot be inferred from POSIX checks.
  • observed — Ownership is checked before candidate selection, with no final manager-identity recheck or pinned definition at spawn. Candidate path and version checks provide separate controls, but do not prove that registration remained unchanged. This is an unresolved transition guarantee, not evidence of a newly exploitable race.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The one-hop marker prevents recursive handoffs. Ordinary signal interruption forwards termination and prevents unintended fallback; completion removes readiness markers and signal handlers. The runner explicitly leaves forced parent termination without a signal as an uncovered case where the child can outlive registration. These supervision behaviors are existing constraints, not demonstrated regressions from the identity gate.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For stronger Linux identity assurance, bind the ownership claim to the loaded FragmentPath and account for effective environment overrides, refusing unsupported combinations. Validate alternate-fragment and already-loaded drop-in cases. This would address a residual proof gap rather than an established increase in exposure.

P1 Badge Avoid parsing localized sc.exe field labels

On non-English Windows installations, sc.exe qc localizes labels such as BINARY_PATH_NAME, so this English-only match returns null even when the registered WinSW binary is correct. queryWinswBinaryPathName() then fails the ownership gate, causing every native WinSW service with a newer recorded runtime to keep serving the stale runtime—the silent-downgrade behavior this change is intended to prevent. Read PathName through a locale-neutral structured interface such as the existing CIM/JSON service query, or another API that does not depend on display labels.

💡 Result:

Official systemd references:

- **Drop-ins:** `systemd.unit(5)` documents unit drop-in files and their precedence. For a service, add an override with `sudo systemctl edit example.service`; systemd creates a drop-in under `/etc/systemd/system/`. ([cgit.freedesktop.org](https://cgit.freedesktop.org/systemd/systemd/tree/man/systemctl.xml?id=99504dd4c13af7516a976fffc0f68e6f26d3faac&utm_source=openai))
- **Environment settings:** `systemd.exec(5)` documents `Environment=` and `EnvironmentFile=`. Put the setting under `[Service]` in the drop-in, e.g. `Environment="NAME=value"`. - **Inspect the loaded unit:** `systemctl show example.service -p FragmentPath -p DropInPaths -p Environment` reports the unit’s main fragment path, drop-in paths, and Environment property. The official systemd D-Bus docs describe `FragmentPath`; the `systemctl` manual is the reference for `show`. Bind the online systemd claim to FragmentPath.

inspectSystemd() queries FragmentPath but reads a unit path derived from deps.home. If a loaded drop-in changes OPENCODEX_HOME to another installation, currentOpenCodexHome() selects that installation's directory. The probe can then read its matching base unit while registration still belongs to the loaded service's original FragmentPath. The ownership gate can accept the foreign claim and delegate to that installation's newer runtime.

Use the loaded fragment path for the online claim. A home override then compares the loaded unit's homes with the live process homes and fails closed when they differ.

Suggested fix
-  const definitionPath = join(deps.home, ".config", "systemd", "user", `${TASK}.service`);
+  const configuredDefinitionPath = join(deps.home, ".config", "systemd", "user", `${TASK}.service`);
...
   const fragmentPath = systemdProperty(shown.stdout, "FragmentPath");
   const needReload = systemdProperty(shown.stdout, "NeedDaemonReload");
+  const definitionPath = fragmentPath || configuredDefinitionPath;

  • Exact head: c7c4b98f2e9e04bfbc6607ad4b0387ba86d56b6c (1d75b0267c from fix(codex): verify service manager identity before census delegation #6379 plus the maintainer hardening c7c4b98f2e). git merge-tree against current dev 7f6b5b7389 is clean.
  • Hosted CI at this head: Cross-platform CI run 36866036006 passed (pull_request). Jobs: test 1/4 through test 4/4, gates, structure gate, storage policy, docker smoke, api usage, macos 1/2, macos 2/2, desktop shell, macos widget + bundle, keyring legs for ubuntu, macos and windows, npm-global legs for ubuntu, macos and windows, and ci. Service lifecycle run 36866036180 also passed, as did React Doctor and hygiene. enforce-target run 36866036583 passed. A second enforce-target run, 36866284017, was cancelled for lack of a runner and has been re-run; confirm its state before merging.
  • Local suites: not run, on explicit owner instruction.
  • Security review (service identity / census delegation): the independent review of 1d75b0267c found the WinSW claim was not bound to its registered binary. This gap predates the PR. c7c4b98f2e adds a trusted sc.exe qc BINARY_PATH_NAME binding that fails closed. The re-review returned PASS bound to c7c4b98f2e9e04bfbc6607ad4b0387ba86d56b6c. The pre-disclosure detail is in lane scratch only; delete it once this PR is merged.
  • Not verified on a real Windows host: an 8.3 short path or a symlinked config directory in the SCM entry would make delegation refuse. That outcome is safe.
  • Attribution: commits by @luvs01, two co-written with Devin AI. The squash carries Co-authored-by: luvs01 <27862058+luvs01@users.noreply.github.com>. After merge, close fix(codex): verify service manager identity before census delegation #6379 with a link to this PR.
