Summary

  • Home-initiated Remote Link preflights the standalone Child and restart capability, enrolls through SSH stdin, restarts once through the existing supervisor, and succeeds only after client-role health and a fresh complete authenticated catalog relay. Failed enrollment compensates Home state and identifies residual Child recovery.
  • SSH setup allowances use measured latency with bounded stdin/exit/output deadlines. Runnable Desktop binaries precede PATH shims; Windows remains unsupported. Child status preserves verified initiation identity, active stored-link observations and supported Hub Home state through the credential-free local Child relay.
  • Adds ocx link probe <alias> and ocx link add <alias> through shared enrollment routes. Non-TTY add requires an exact fingerprint; TTY requires explicit confirmation. Keys are never printed. English and translated command references are synchronized.

Verification

  • Final head: 9b8723ece9cad44b56c0c04e66674f42db0fecaf, rebased once under coordinator decision2 onto 862b8f1c80f0fb643bb5746939f89decef0f8f8f. Generated skill maps were regenerated from the combined capability registry and retain both hub disable and link probe/add; both lanes' structure text remains.
  • bun test tests/server/link-enrollment.test.ts tests/server/link-management-routes.test.ts tests/cli/cli-link-enrollment.test.ts tests/cli/cli-link.test.ts tests/clients/link-ssh-argv-discovery.test.ts tests/clients/link-ssh-argv.test.ts tests/clients/link-ssh-runner.test.ts tests/clients/link-status-projection.test.ts tests/cli/cli-status-hub-state.test.ts tests/clients/client-hub-state.test.ts: 215 pass, 1 skip, 0 fail. PowerShell-only parsing is skipped locally on macOS; hosted Windows coverage remains required. Coverage includes role/capability refusal before effects, exactly one restart, fresh matching-key complete catalog, failure/compensation/residual phases, deadlines, fingerprint/TTY negatives, conservative ownership and token-file recovery.
  • bun test tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/skill-ocx.test.ts: 43 pass, 0 fail.
  • cd gui && bun test tests/remote-link.test.tsx: 48 pass, 0 fail. The GUI source-oracle reads all current route/enrollment/auth owners while retaining translations for legacy servers. This is a test-only gui/ change with no runtime UI change; the coordinator applied gui-screenshot-waived.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run skill:surface:check, bun run privacy:scan and git diff --check origin/dev..HEAD: exit 0. cd docs-site && bun run build: 569 pages, 79332 internal links, exit 0. Prior unchanged GUI runtime build at corrective head8c1bf8f2f9 passed; no broad local suite is claimed passing.
  • Full local and changed suites are unrun by the coordinator's explicit resource restriction during concurrent lanes. The focused regressions above cover changed behavior; exact-head hosted PR and lane=all runs provide broader platform validation and remain pending before READY.
  • Independent security/correctness evidence: comprehensive L6 source body at46ac8b3294 PASS0blockers, two-comment delta at1e660e745d PASS0blockers, full corrective delta at8c1bf8f2f9 PASS0blockers. Final independent rebased integration review at9b8723ece9: PASS, 0 blockers; all16 L6 executable files unchanged from the reviewed candidate and both lanes preserved. Reviews explicitly assess secrets, authentication and unsafe defaults within recorded scope; no cross-family independence is claimed. Correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings were repaired.
  • Final-head PR CI: https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/38152369318. Final-head manual lane=all: https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/38152374544. Both are pending; no green claim is made. Older-head gates failures from the repaired source-oracle and batch5 test1/4 process timeout are not passing evidence. If the timeout recurs, batch/file overlap and origin/dev comparison will be recorded before any further fix decision. No live Child configuration or service was modified by this lane.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added ocx link probe and ocx link add commands to inspect a remote host and connect a Child after confirming its SSH fingerprint. Non-interactive use requires an expected fingerprint.
    • Remote Link enrollment checks required Child capabilities, restarts the Child after connection, and verifies its relay before reporting success.
    • ocx status identifies Remote Link connections and reports available connection and Child status, including link direction and tunnel details.
    • Expanded Remote Link guidance with terminal setup, recovery, and status details across English and translated guides.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved status reporting when Remote Link Hub state is unavailable, avoiding stale Hub details when the remote host does not provide them.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This change adds ocx link probe and ocx link add for Home-initiated Child enrollment. The Home confirms host identity, checks Child support, restarts the Child, and verifies its relay. Link status projection and ocx status now report client connection and Remote Link Home state.

Changes

Remote Link enrollment and status

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remote SSH execution and Child probes
src/link/remote-probe.ts, src/link/ssh-argv.ts, src/link/ssh-runner.ts, tests/clients/link-ssh-*, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, structure/remote-link.md
Remote command discovery checks executable candidates and their versions, and rejects unsupported Windows-like platforms. Child probes validate health and catalog responses. SSH execution applies a shared deadline and output limits. Tests cover candidate selection, timeouts, output caps, and cleanup.
Home-side enrollment lifecycle
src/server/management/link-enrollment.ts, src/server/management/link-route-state.ts, src/server/management/link-routes.ts, src/server/management/route-registry.ts, tests/server/link-enrollment.test.ts, tests/server/link-management-routes.test.ts, gui/tests/remote-link.test.tsx
The Home probes and confirms host fingerprints, validates Child requirements, applies the connection, restarts the Child, and verifies a fresh authenticated catalog relay. The routes accept dashboard access or trusted loopback admin authority. Failures trigger Home-side compensation and may report residual Child configuration.
CLI enrollment and command reference
src/cli/link-enrollment.ts, src/cli/link.ts, src/cli/capabilities-base.ts, tests/cli/cli-link-enrollment.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-link.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/*/guides/remote-link.md, skills/ocx/references/*, structure/cli-management.md, structure/remote-link.md
The CLI adds probe and add flows. Add requires a matching expected fingerprint or explicit terminal confirmation. The CLI applies a request deadline and reports phase-specific failures, including recovery guidance when remote state may remain. Command indexes, guides, and tests cover the flow.
Child link status projection
src/link/status-projection.ts, src/client/link-status.ts, src/cli/link.ts, src/server/management/link-routes.ts, tests/clients/link-status-projection.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-link.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-link-enrollment.test.ts, structure/remote-link.md
Client connection details can supply Child and link status when the local link store is empty. Direction and alias use matching sidecar or marker evidence. Unavailable or mismatched evidence does not establish a direction.
Remote Link Hub status reporting
src/cli/status.ts, src/cli/index.ts, src/client/hub-client.ts, src/client/hub-state.ts, tests/cli/cli-status-hub-state.test.ts, structure/cli-management.md, structure/remote-link.md, structure/runtime.md
Status JSON retains connection transport. For Link transport, Hub state is read through a live local Child proxy without an API key. A hub_state_not_a_hub response is reported as unavailable and does not fall back to cached Hub state.

… refusal on Remote Link Children (#6959)

Squashed from #6959 for the 2.84.0 release train.

A Remote Link Child relayed inference to its Home, but its dashboard failed with "Dashboard data could not be loaded", its Codex `config.toml` kept its own OpenCodex-written settings, and its CLI answered with hub wording, `not_found` or "Hub does not support client usage". This PR gives the Child an authenticated, read-only view of its Home, applies the Home's OpenCodex-owned Codex settings when the Child syncs, and makes every management command either read the Home or refuse with one message.
**Read-only management relay over the link**
- `src/link/management-routes.ts` holds a shared, default-deny allowlist of Home management GET reads. A read is allowed only for a listed path, GET or HEAD, and a query without `refresh`, `reload`, `force` or `quota`.
- The Home's hub-link listener serves those paths under `/v1/link-management/…`, after the existing link-key admission (only recorded link keys). `src/server/index/link-management.ts` builds a fresh loopback request with no caller headers, cookies, Origin or principal and returns only content headers with `no-store`. The prefix does not exist on the public listener.
- The Child dashboard's shared plane becomes the Child listener's `/api/machine/hub-relay` base. The browser holds only the Child's own session (`/api/machine/hub-relay/opencodex-session` is answered locally), and `src/client/link-management-relay.ts` sends allowlisted reads through the existing connection-bound link relay, so the link key is attached only after the tunnel listener proves the link identity. Everything else gets `403 link_child_read_only` before a request exists. The Child's unauthenticated data-plane ingress still relays only the data-plane table.
- The dashboard shows "Managed by Home <name> over Remote Link (<link id>)", outside the page error boundary. The header quota strip now reads the Home's `/api/provider-quotas`.
- The Home answers every link read as a passive read (`src/lib/passive-read.ts`): it shows what the Home already knows and does not make it act on providers, accounts, processes or files. Model discovery returns no routed models. Provider quota and Codex accounts come from the Home's caches without a probe or token refresh. The startup diagnostic, Codex version probes, bundled-catalog refresh and native-main ownership re-probe are not started. Credential-store hardening and malformed-file backups are skipped, and memory-budget eviction only drops caches registered as memory-only. `/api/injection-model` and `/api/sidecar-settings` therefore list native options plus the Home's current picks.
**Home Codex settings (scope 1)**
I checked which Codex keys OpenCodex writes. The injector reads four policy fields from OpenCodex config: `fastMode` (`[features] fast_mode`), `multiAgentMode` (the `features.multi_agent_v2` reconcile), `webSearchSidecar.enabled` (root `web_search`), and the effective managed sub-agent defaults (`syncCodexSubagentDefaults` + `injectionModel` + `injectionEffort`). Effort caps, the sub-agent roster and fallback, the injection prompt, sidecar and compaction routing are applied per request by the Home's proxy, so they already followed the Home.
`src/link/codex-settings.ts` publishes those four on `/v1/link-management/codex-settings`. It is a separate authenticated read because the catalog bytes are written verbatim to `model_catalog_json`. Connect and `syncConnectedClient` overlay the strictly parsed document before injection. After the injection that applies it succeeds, a fresh read is recorded in `<configDir>/link/home-codex-settings.json` (0600, keyed by link id, removed on disconnect). A failed read reuses the record, and an older Home keeps the Child's local values and says so. `ocx sync` and `ocx status` list which values came from the Home. The record's host name is also how a Home-initiated Child names its Home in messages.
**CLI (scope 3)**
`src/cli/link-child.ts` applies the same table to `runtimeRequest`, the account client, observation and `ocx debug`. Reads go to the Home over the bound relay. Everything else is refused with `linkChildManagementRefusal`: "This machine is a Remote Link Child managed by Home <name> (link <id>). <METHOD path> runs on the Home, not on this Child: use the Home's dashboard or run the command there. No request was sent." The text no longer mentions a relay transport. `ocx usage` reads the Home with Home wording, `ocx account list` reads the Home, `ocx status` describes a Remote Link Home (rebased onto #6955's local Child relay for `/v1/hub-state`), `ocx provider list|show` and `ocx config get` print a stderr note that the values are local and inactive, `ocx config set|unset|import` write locally with that note, and `ocx provider add|remove|set-default` are refused. Account commands classify providers from the Home's `/api/providers` projection, so Home-only providers are listed.
