fix(history): rebuild large request-history indexes on a worker thread (#6990) - #7070
Conversation
#6990) Split from #6999. A full rebuild of a ledger of at least 1 MiB runs on a Bun Worker that writes a private build file; the serving thread swaps it in once complete. Async readers wait without blocking the event loop; the routing-time sync entry throws RequestHistoryIndexBusyError, which health scoring already reads as unknown evidence. Ingest moves to ingest.ts so the worker and the inline path share it.

… history in structure Addresses Codex review on #7070: the build that reaches the async wait limit is now refreshed and served instead of reported busy, and structure/manifest.json maps src/routing/history/ to dashboard-and-usage.md.

Addresses CodeRabbit review on #7070: during the worker-failure cooldown, async readers and manual rebuilds fall back to the inline rebuild instead of reporting busy; routing-time reads still never rebuild inline.

… colliding (#7089) * fix(usage): keep usage-ledger file ids exact so Windows NTFS ids stop colliding UsageLogRevision carried dev and ino as JS Numbers. NTFS file ids put a sequence number in their high bits and routinely exceed 2^53, so two different ledger files could round to the same Number and pass every identity check: the history indexer, the ingest tail guard, the cooperative ledger scanner and ledger retention would all treat a replaced ledger as the recorded one. This is what made the stale-ledger build case fail on Windows CI (#7070). Read dev/ino through bigint fstat (exactFileIdentity) and carry them as exact decimal strings end to end, including the schema_meta source identity, following the Aside profile precedent in #3842. Indexes written by an older build stored rounded values and rebuild once on mismatch. The stale-ledger test goes back to perturbing ino, now exactly, and asserts the revision matches bigint stats. * docs(usage): describe exact ledger file identity and index rebuilds * test(usage): cover colliding NTFS ids and legacy metadata reuse --------- Co-authored-by: jun <jun@juns-Mac-Studio.local> Co-authored-by: GOAT <goat@localhost>
Summary
First slice of #6999, which is being split into reviewable pieces. Part of #6990.
Rebuilding the request-history index ran on the serving event loop: one rebuild of a 2.34 GB ledger froze every provider for 487 s. With this change, a full rebuild of a ledger of 1 MiB or more runs on a Bun Worker, and the proxy keeps serving while it runs.
rebuild-worker.ts(driven byrebuild-job.ts) creates a private<index>.rebuild-<pid>-<n>file, ingests the ledger snapshot the refresh recorded, switches the file to WAL and closes it. The serving thread then closes the old index and renames the build over it, so readers never see a partial index. Rows appended during the build are picked up as a normal tail afterwards.indexer.tstoingest.ts, so the worker and the inline path write identical rows and meta. It gains an end offset (index the recorded snapshot) and a ledger identity check (a replaced ledger fails the build as stale, and the refresh restarts against the new file).openRequestHistoryIndex()and the management/analytics routes wait for the build without blocking the loop. The routing-timeopenRequestHistoryIndexSync()never waits: it starts the build if needed and throwsRequestHistoryIndexBusyError.health.tsalready catches that and treats the evidence as unknown, and its 1.5 s cache TTL picks up the new index soon after the swap.closeRequestHistoryIndex()discards an in-flight build, rejects waiting readers withRequestHistoryIndexClosedError, and removes the build files only after the worker thread has exited. A worker also sweeps build files left by dead processes. A failed build (other than a replaced ledger) is not retried by routing-time reads for 30 s, so a persistent failure cannot spawn a worker per routing decision. If a worker cannot be spawned at all, the rebuild runs inline as before.request-history-rebuild-workerinscripts/build-standalone.tsso compiled binaries embed it.Ledgers under 1 MiB keep the existing inline rebuild. Known limits, left to later slices of #6999: the swap (close, unlink, rename) and the per-refresh
quick_checkstill run on the serving thread, tails and checkpoints stay inline, and a close during a build surfaces as a 500 rather than a 503 at the management boundary.Verification
tests/usage/request-history-rebuild-worker.test.ts(9 tests): the worker build equals the inline build on an edge-case ledger (malformed, oversized, blank and partial lines); a timer runs during a worker rebuild and does not during the inline control; sync reads report busy and then use the swapped index; appends during the build arrive as a tail; a replaced ledger restarts the build; a close rejects readers and leaves no build files; the history endpoint waits and answers 200; dead-process build files are swept and own ones kept; a stale build fails and removes its file. Passed 3/3 consecutive runs. Removing the close-lifetime check or the ledger identity check makes the matching test fail.request-history-index,health-scoring,routing-analytics,route-explainability: 61 pass.bun run test:changed(1,300 files via the import graph): 29,411 pass / 10 fail.
