Thanks @luvs01. Scoping update recovery to the service home that owns it fills a real gap, and the shared policy module is easy to follow. Two problems block it at
Repro: |

✅ Deterministic PR hygiene checks passed. |

The two regression points are addressed in Initial unknown service-home evidence now permits an otherwise-authorized package-only update while refusing service/tray control, repair, and restart. Changed authority and unresolved ownership/teardown still block replacement. The worker and child propagate restrictions in both directions, and the existing v1 probe remains compatible with old updaters through a separate package-only capability probe. The lease fixtures now declare service-home evidence without weakening their original stop/replacement/recovery assertions, and the stale source oracle is corrected. The final focused candidate run recorded 302 pass / 1 Windows skip / 1 fail (exit 1). The remaining sandboxed staged-update recovery failure also occurs on the recorded baseline: the history coordinator refuses an unsafe namespace. Our baseline two-file reproduction was 39 pass / 1 fail, rather than 40 pass / 0 fail; the preceding PR head added the ten regressions described in your report. The PR body records the exact command, successful static/docs checks, and coverage limits. Exact-head hosted CI is pending; full-suite and native service smoke are unverified, and the PR remains Draft. |

Remote validation of the carry in #7215 found that this change fails 9 existing dev tests in tests/update/update-job.test.ts and tests/update/update-restart-lease.test.ts (it refuses an automatic service restart where dev expects the direct-start fallback). #7154 is held out of that bundle and stays open; the other carried PRs land without it. |

Could you share the exact failing test names and logs for the remaining two so we can check them against this correction? Full-suite, native-platform, and maintainer-host reruns were not performed; the earlier staged-recovery sandbox failure was not rechecked. Scope update recovery to stable service-home authority across worker, Node and Bun paths. Preserve stopped cold updates, require compatible inspection before delegation, and release recovery leases before caller exit. Document the recovery contract and add focused regression coverage.
Replay onto current dev dropped content that only ever lived inside merge resolutions: the update-home test shard registration, the sanitized node <path> worker display, the worker authority seam, and the recovery-contract sentences. Restored verbatim from 4ca5868 so the branch stays the union of dev and the original feature.
…waits Two post-replacement awaits ran between the last authority check and the mutations they preceded: the service-args import before the wrapper stop/port reclaim in the worker restart, and the shim module import before the shim rewrite/tray refresh in the Bun update path. A home change landing during either window could see control actions run under stale authority. Re-probe at the mutation boundary; refusal restores only the own stopped tray and fails closed. job.ts stays net-zero lines to hold the file-size ratchet.
- reclaimListenPort gains mayMutateFn, re-checked after each availability await and immediately before every kill/TCP-row drop; a denial reports not-freed without touching processes or TCP rows. - job.ts and index.ts pass homePolicy.check() as that gate and bail on a denied reclaim instead of misclassifying it as a busy-port timeout. - index.ts moves the isCodexShimInstalled filesystem probe inside the guarded try so a throw after package replacement degrades to the shim warning instead of escaping post-replacement recovery.

Summary
Keep package updates and recovery within the service-home authority observed when the operation began. An initially unknown home permits an otherwise-authorized package-only update with manual restart guidance; it grants no proxy, tray or service-control authority. Changed registration, live package use, uncertain runtime ownership and unresolved teardown still refuse replacement or recovery.
The GUI worker carries that original baseline through protocol-v2 Node/Bun delegation and restart recovery. Stable foreign or absent service registration preserves recovery of the captured own foreground runtime without global service repair or wrapper control. Refusal cleanup can only restore this operation's previously running own tray through a verified launcher.
Post-replacement checks cover shim, tray and service actions. The worker rechecks after the service import, and both worker and Bun recovery pass a live authority gate into port reclaim. The reclaimer checks it after availability awaits and before each kill or TCP-row change. A denied or throwing probe stays denied for that recovery operation even if the registration later matches again. Shim-status probe errors remain warnings and do not abort otherwise-authorized recovery. Shared policy/probe modules, worker helpers, command redaction, registration layout, documentation and the related Node/Bun/Windows regression fixtures are included in the full change.
