Summary

On Windows, every qoder-cn turn failed with Invalid setting source: "--max-turns" when the official CN installer was used (#7518). That installer puts qodercn.cmd on PATH, and it forwards arguments through powershell -File ... -- %*. The real CLI, qoderclicn.exe, is also on PATH. Two things went wrong. whichFromPath tried .cmd before .exe, and resolveCodingAgentBinary returned the first candidate hit, so the dispatcher was launched. The PowerShell hop then dropped the empty values of --tools "" and --setting-sources "", and --max-turns was read as the setting source. As the issue's control B shows, re-quoting in escapeCmdArg cannot fix this, because the loss happens in the vendor's PowerShell hop.

This follows the repair direction from the maintainer comment on the issue. PATH and the profile keep ownership of the choice, and nothing is guessed from install paths. PATHEXT is untouched, and the empty tools/settings isolation is unchanged.

  • whichFromPath: inside one PATH directory, a same-stem .exe now beats the .cmd beside it, matching Windows' own PATHEXT order. PATH order still decides between directories.
  • resolveCodingAgentBinary: across a profile's own candidate names (qodercn/qoderclicn, qoder/qodercli), the first native hit wins over an earlier batch dispatcher. Only native hits are cached, so a native build installed after startup is found on the next turn.
  • Turn preflight (turn.ts + new batch-dispatcher.ts): when a turn must still launch a .cmd/.bat and its arguments contain an empty value, the dispatcher chain is inspected. The turn proceeds only if every file was read completely (64 KiB bound), every hop to another batch file resolved to a literal %~dp0 or absolute path and was inspected in turn (at most four files), and no file forwards through powershell/pwsh. Anything else is refused before spawn with cli_dispatcher_drops_empty_args: a PowerShell hop, a hop through a variable, an unreadable or oversized file, or a deeper chain. The message names the dispatcher by basename only and points at the native executables. CALL :label and calls of a .exe are allowed, so the npm cmd-shim layout used by Claude Code and CodeBuddy installs keeps launching through cmd.exe. cmd.exe delivers "" intact, as the Windows control test below shows.

Before, with the CN installer layout: cmd.exe /d /s /c "...\\entry\\qodercn.cmd ... ^"--setting-sources^" ^"^" ^"--max-turns^" ..." → Invalid setting source: "--max-turns".
After: ...\\bin\\qoderclicn\\qoderclicn.exe is spawned directly with "--setting-sources", "", "--max-turns", "1". With only the dispatcher on PATH, the turn fails before launch with an actionable error.

The Qoder guide in docs-site and structure/providers-and-adapters.md describe the new behavior.

Verification

Head 89b25a7ba1:

  • bun run typecheck → exit 0. bun run structure:check and bun run privacy:scan → passed.
  • bun test tests/adapters/coding-agent-windows-dispatch.test.ts → 20 pass. Red→green: 10 fail with profile.ts/turn.ts reverted to origin/dev, and the 4 chain/read-bound tests fail against the first commit's inspector. Covered: same-stem EXE/CMD in one directory, competing PATH directories, POSIX lookup unchanged, CN (qodercn/qoderclicn) and Global (qoder/qodercli) aliases, explicit resolver selection, cached discovery (a dispatcher-only result is not pinned; a native hit is), dispatcher inspection with real files (PowerShell hop; modern npm cmd-shim; comment-only mention; unreadable; a hop past 64 KiB; outer→inner PowerShell and outer→inner native chains; variable, relative, and missing targets; a self-reference; a five-hop chain), a .cmd-only Qoder CN install refused before spawn, a native executable spawned with both empty values, and a Claude CLI npm-shim install still launching through cmd.exe.
  • tests/windows/coding-agent-native-empty-argv.test.ts (win32 only) compiles a native receiver .exe that records the argv it actually got, and uses only fixture PATH directories. Cases: (1) control: the vendor-shaped PowerShell dispatcher drops the empty values; (2) control: a %*-forwarding dispatcher keeps them through cmd.exe; (3) a real qoder-cn turn, with the dispatcher first on PATH, launches the native receiver and delivers --tools "" and --setting-sources "" --max-turns 1; (4) a dispatcher-only PATH is refused before anything runs. At the first head (73fbdc4bd2, run 39786633222) all four passed on a real runner in windows 4/9/5/9.
  • The reviewer's affected batch (coding-agent-windows-dispatch, qoder-adapter, codebuddy-adapter, coding-agent-native-empty-argv) on Bun 1.4.3, three plain runs and three --isolate runs → 181 pass / 6 skip / 0 fail each time.
  • bun run test (Bun 1.4.3, isolated HOME/CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR/OPENCODEX_HOME) → 50759 pass / 136 skip / 14 fail. The 14 are the same test names that fail on unmodified origin/dev 0706074b80 in this environment (an inherited GOOGLE_ANTIGRAVITY_USER_AGENT breaks the Antigravity UA tests; the rest are Desktop observation-revocation cases), confirmed with a side-by-side run of the affected files on both checkouts.
  • lane=all at 89b25a7ba1: https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/39802220149 (result posted as a comment when complete). At the first head, run 39786633222: every leg passed after one rerun of windows 6/9, which had failed in the unrelated ocx-launcher-runtime cleanup test; the run's ci aggregator ran before the rerun finished and still shows failure.
  • NOT RUN: a live Qoder CN turn against the real vendor installer and account.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • On Windows, native executables are preferred over command-script dispatchers when resolving coding-agent tools, while PATH directory order is respected.
    • Dispatchers that preserve empty command-line arguments continue to work. If argument preservation can’t be confirmed, the CLI stops before launch and reports an error.
    • PowerShell-backed dispatchers that drop empty arguments are rejected; install or place the native executable on PATH instead.
  • Documentation
    • Updated provider guidance to explain Windows executable selection and dispatcher compatibility.

…opping dispatchers

On Windows, whichFromPath tried .cmd before .exe and resolveCodingAgentBinary
returned the first candidate hit. The official Qoder CN layout puts the
PowerShell dispatcher qodercn.cmd on PATH ahead of qoderclicn.exe, and the
PowerShell hop drops empty argv entries, so --setting-sources "" swallowed
--max-turns and every qoder-cn turn failed.

- whichFromPath: a same-stem .exe beats the .cmd in the same PATH directory;
PATH order still decides between directories.
- resolveCodingAgentBinary: the first native hit among a profile's candidates
wins over an earlier batch dispatcher; only native hits are cached.
- turn preflight: a remaining .cmd/.bat that must carry an empty argument is
read, and the turn is refused with cli_dispatcher_drops_empty_args before
spawn when it forwards through powershell/pwsh or cannot be read. npm-style
shims that forward %* directly keep working.

📝 Walkthrough

Windows coding-agent lookup now prefers native executables. Before a turn passes empty arguments through a batch dispatcher, it inspects the dispatcher chain. If it cannot confirm argument preservation, the turn returns cli_dispatcher_drops_empty_args without spawning the CLI.

Changes: Windows coding-agent dispatch

Layer / File(s) Summary
Windows executable discovery
src/adapters/coding-agent/profile.ts, tests/adapters/coding-agent-windows-dispatch.test.ts, tests/providers/codebuddy-adapter.test.ts
Windows lookup checks .exe before .cmd and .bat within each PATH directory. Resolution prefers native executables across profile candidates and caches native hits only. Tests cover PATH precedence, resolution, caching, and Windows command shims.
Dispatcher inspection and turn preflight
src/adapters/coding-agent/batch-dispatcher.ts, src/adapters/coding-agent/turn.ts, tests/adapters/coding-agent-windows-dispatch.test.ts, tests/windows/coding-agent-native-empty-argv.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/providers.md, structure/providers-and-adapters.md
The turn inspects a batch dispatcher when its arguments include an empty string. If inspection cannot confirm preservation, it returns cli_dispatcher_drops_empty_args without spawning. Tests cover PowerShell dispatchers, direct %* forwarding, native executable launches, and CodeBuddy command shims. Documentation describes executable precedence and dispatcher preflight.

Reviewed the full ten-file patch at 73fbdc4bd2d463e5bd68ae399bc98e7039cde624. Native candidate selection addresses the reported CN installer layout, but the dispatcher's negative verdict is not yet a complete empty-argument preflight. I independently reproduced the two existing review concerns using the real file reader on Linux (no native Windows CLI/account calls):

  • src/adapters/coding-agent/batch-dispatcher.ts:17-18: a file with a 64-KiB comment prefix and a subsequent powershell.exe -File ... -- %* returns { preservesEmptyArguments: true }. Detect an unread tail and refuse incomplete inspection; test the boundary with a real file.
  • src/adapters/coding-agent/batch-dispatcher.ts:47-52: call "%~dp0inner.cmd" %*, where the inner fixture forwards through PowerShell, also returns true. Follow only a bounded verifiable dispatcher chain, or refuse an indirect launch whose empty-argument behavior is unknown. Keep a direct npm shim control. The direct PowerShell control correctly returns powershell_hop; these probes establish the inspection decision, not native argv execution.
  • tests/windows/coding-agent-native-empty-argv.test.ts:109: the dispatcher-only test appends the machine PATH. A preinstalled qoderclicn.exe can satisfy discovery and launch instead of exercising refusal. Restrict the selection tests to their fixture directories and retain the explicit system PowerShell path for the control.

Independent bounded Bun 1.4.3 / Linux batch: coding-agent-windows-dispatch, qoder-adapter, codebuddy-adapter and the native-empty-argv file produced 175 passed / 6 platform/hook skips / 1 failed. The failure is CodeBuddy's in-flight abort test timing out at 5 seconds; the same case alone on the unchanged base passed. This does not establish a branch regression or a green affected batch. The native Windows receiver cases were skipped locally; the dispatched lane and current-head required CI remain separate evidence. Please address the preflight/test-isolation points and reconcile the affected batch before readiness.

…sting empty args

Review follow-up for #7527:
- a dispatcher larger than the 64 KiB inspection bound is refused as
  incomplete instead of approved on a truncated read;
- a hop to another .cmd/.bat is followed only through a literal %~dp0 or
absolute path, up to four files; a hop through a variable, a deeper chain,
or an unreadable target is refused (CALL :label and native .exe targets
  stay allowed, so npm cmd-shims keep working);
- the Windows native-receiver turns use only fixture PATH directories, so a
Qoder CLI installed on the host cannot satisfy discovery.

Thanks for the independent probes. All three points are addressed in 89b25a7ba1:

  • Truncated read (batch-dispatcher.ts): a file past the 64 KiB bound is refused as incomplete. Your probe (64 KiB comment prefix, then a PowerShell forward) is now a real-file test.
  • Batch-to-batch hop: references to another .cmd/.bat are followed only through literal %~dp0 or absolute paths, with each file inspected, up to four files. Variable or relative targets, missing targets, and deeper chains are refused. Your call "%~dp0inner.cmd" %* → PowerShell inner probe is a real-file test and returns powershell_hop. The direct npm shim control is kept, now in the modern cmd-shim form (CALL :find_dp0, title %COMSPEC%, "%_prog%" ... %*).
  • PATH isolation (tests/windows/coding-agent-native-empty-argv.test.ts): both turn cases use only the fixture directories.

On the affected batch: I ran exactly your four files on Bun 1.4.3 three times plainly and three times with --isolate (coding-agent-windows-dispatch, qoder-adapter, codebuddy-adapter, coding-agent-native-empty-argv). Every run was 181 pass / 6 skip / 0 fail. The CodeBuddy in-flight abort case (codebuddy-adapter.test.ts:681) runs on POSIX, where the new preflight is never entered and resolution returns the injected native path, so I could not reproduce the 5 s timeout. It passed in all six runs, but I am not claiming that rules out a load-dependent flake.

The full suite on 89b25a7ba1 gives 50759 pass / 136 skip / 14 fail. The 14 are the same test names that fail on unmodified origin/dev 0706074b80 in this environment. Red→green: 4 of the new inspector tests fail against the previous commit's inspector. lane=all for this head: https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/39802220149.

Re-reviewed exact head 89b25a7ba11e8f259e8bfcdd9ab6fd0fd7006b6e. The three defects in my earlier change request are addressed: the default reader refuses an incomplete >64-KiB file, literal batch-to-batch references are inspected within a four-file bound, and the Windows turn fixtures use only their own PATH directories. The added real-file tests cover both original probes, with the direct npm-shim control retained.

Independent capped Linux/Bun 1.4.3 run of coding-agent-windows-dispatch, qoder-adapter, codebuddy-adapter, and coding-agent-native-empty-argv: 180 pass / 6 skip / 1 fail, 653 assertions. The failure is an in-flight abort kills the child process gracefully with SIGTERM exceeding its unchanged 5000-ms test budget. That exact test also times out alone at this head and on trusted dev 26415a90e4 under the same envelope. This is baseline-reproduced evidence, not a claim that the batch is green or that the test is harmless. No timeout was raised.

I am withdrawing the earlier dispatcher/PATH blockers. Current-head hosted PR and dispatched cross-platform CI both succeed (39802229426 / 39802220149); native Windows argv controls were skipped locally, so their execution evidence remains hosted. Local project typecheck/full-suite were not repeated. This focused re-review does not certify every possible batch-language forwarding form or authorize a live Qoder turn; no live provider/client was called.

@Ingwannu
Ingwannu dismissed their stale review October 23, 2026 07:04

Withdrawing prior truncated-read, indirect batch hop and fixture PATH blockers: fixed at 89b25a7 and verified by the new real-file tests. The local CodeBuddy abort timeout also reproduces on trusted dev and is reported separately; this is not an approving review.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reject recognized launch lines that do not forward %*.

inspectLine accepts both @"%~dp0real.exe" %1 and @call "%~dp0inner.cmd" as batch lines. The first has no queued path, and the second queues the nested batch file, but neither check verifies argument forwarding. The inspector can therefore return preservesEmptyArguments: true.

When the turn contains an empty argument, turn.ts accepts that verdict and calls spawnFn. The batch launch then forwards only %1, or no arguments for the CALL, so the empty argument can be lost.
