Summary

When fewer than five models are featured on the Subagents page, Codex's spawn_agent tool still lists five models. The extra ones are whatever rows sort next by catalog priority, and nothing on the page or in the docs said so (#7366). This PR documents that fill behavior in guides/sub-agent-surface.md and its seven existing translations (fr, ja, ko, ru, tr, zh-cn, zh-tw). No code changes.

The new section Which models spawn_agent advertises covers:

  • How Codex chooses: it sorts picker-visible rows by priority and takes the first five. subagentModels only pins the lowest priorities, in roster order. It is not an allowlist.
  • What fills the empty slots:
    • No account selectors: other routed rows at priority 5, by provider and then model id alphabetically. Unfeatured native rows sit at 100 + featured count or higher.
    • With account selectors: account-qualified native rows come right after the featured band, and unfeatured routed rows move to 1005.
  • A worked example with two featured models.
  • With an empty roster, opencodex pins nothing.
  • The list doesn't restrict exact-name overrides.
  • How to control the list: feature five, disable or deselect a model, or use modelPickerOrder (routed-only vs. complete order, linked to Model ordering).
  • On v2, rows pinned "disabled" are skipped first. opencodex's {{roster}} guidance names only configured models, so filler rows appear only in Codex's own tool text.

A short FAQ entry points to the section.

Every statement comes from current source. Featured ranks and the default routed, account, and native bands are in src/codex/catalog/build-entries.ts (buildCatalogEntriesFromObservedState, nativePriority, retained-row re-ranking, applyFullModelPickerOrder). The five-row window and the v2 disabled filter are in src/codex/catalog/subagent-roster.ts (effectiveSubagentRoster). The guidance roster filtering to configured models is in src/server/responses/collaboration.ts. I confirmed the two catalog scenarios by running the builder and the sync merge in a scratch script:

  • No selectors, featured [e/m5, b/m2]: priorities 0 and 1, then the other routed rows at 5, then natives at 102. Window = e/m5, b/m2, a/m1, c/m3, d/m4.
  • Two selectors: window = e/m5, b/m2, acct1/gpt-5.5, acct2/gpt-5.5, acct1/gpt-5.6-sol, with routed rows at 1005.

Refs #7366. This PR does not close the issue: the dashboard hint is a separate UI track.

Decisions

  • Docs only. This follows the approved scope for this lane. The fill policy is unchanged, and the Sub-agents dashboard hint is left for the UI track. That is why this uses Refs and not Closes.
  • Translations. Each locale gets the same section, placed before its "Delegation model" heading, plus the FAQ entry. They reuse each page's existing terms (for example 선택기 in ko and Latin "picker" in ru). French uses the file's no-break spaces before :, ; and ?. The translated FAQ entries name the section in plain text and don't link to an in-page anchor, because translated heading slugs vary by locale.
  • No dedicated test. This is a reversible docs change, and a test that matched the prose would only mirror it. The existing docs gates cover link targets, screenshot policy, and provider claims, and the docs build validates internal links.
  • Published from a fork. The authenticated account (chlwnsgurg) has read-only access to lidge-jun/opencodex, so the branch is pushed to chlwnsgurg/opencodex.

Verification

All runs used an isolated HOME, CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, and OPENCODEX_HOME (mktemp), Bun 1.4.3 (~/.bun/bin/bun, also set as OCX_TEST_RUNNER_BUN), and flock /tmp/ocx-heavy-test.lock for the heavy steps.

  • cd docs-site && bun install --frozen-lockfile && bun run build: pass. 593 pages built. opencodex-internal-links checked 84,837 internal links, and the new #which-models-spawn_agent-advertises anchor resolves.
  • Focused: bun test on every test that reads docs-site content (the 14 tests/ci-workflows/docs-*, file-size-ratchet, privacy-scan-meta-key, skill-ocx-workflows, and zz-pr-coderabbit-readiness-revalidation tests, plus tests/codex-integration/codex-inject-history-wording.test.ts) and tests/ci-workflows/repo-hygiene.test.ts: 295 pass / 0 fail (16 files).
  • bun run test:changed: selected 0 tests. The diff has only docs files, which Bun's import graph can't follow. The runner exits 1 by design in that case and points to focused tests, listed above.
  • bun run typecheck: pass (exit 0).
  • bun run privacy:scan: pass.
  • bun run structure:check: pass.
  • scripts/ci/windows-sensitive-diff.sh (EVENT_NAME=pull_request PATH_SELECTED=false): windows=false. Only docs-site/ files changed, and no ci.yml windows path filter matches, so no lane=all dispatch is needed.
  • Not run: full bun run test. The change touches only Markdown under docs-site/ and no src/ or tests/ files. The docs build and the docs-reading tests above cover it, and the rest is left to CI.
  • No GUI changes, so no screenshot.
  • After the review fix (head 90947ec), I reran the docs build (pass, 84,837 links checked), the same focused set (295 pass / 0 fail), and privacy:scan (pass). The fix only changes one sentence in each of the eight Markdown files, so the typecheck, structure:check, and Windows-selector results from ea42615 still hold.

Review

  • CodeRabbit (FAQ said Codex "always" fills five slots): accepted and fixed in 90947ec across all eight pages. The wording is now "up to five", matching .slice(0, 5) after the filters in effectiveSubagentRoster. Thread replied to and resolved.
  • CodeRabbit additional comment, marked "unverified" (use typographic apostrophes in the French text): declined. The existing French page mostly uses straight apostrophes (54 straight vs 32 curly before this PR), including the neighboring FAQ heading "Le choix d'un modèle…", so the added text follows the majority style. Converting the whole page would be unrelated cleanup.
  • CodeRabbit re-review of 90947ec: no new findings.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. (None: docs only. No auth, credentials, dependency, workflow, or release changes, so no security summary is needed.)

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

When fewer than five models are featured, Codex fills the remaining
spawn_agent slots with the next picker-visible rows by priority. Document
which rows those are (routed rows at priority 5 alphabetically, or
account-qualified native rows when account selectors exist), how to control
the list, and that opencodex v2 guidance never names the filler rows.
English plus the seven existing locale translations.

📝 Walkthrough

The English guide and seven localized guides describe how Codex selects and advertises up to five spawn_agent models. They cover roster priorities, catalog-based slot filling, visibility and v2 rules, and FAQ answers about models that were not explicitly featured.

The FAQ said Codex always fills five slots; with fewer eligible
picker rows (for example after v2 skips "disabled" rows) it lists fewer.
Applied to every locale copy.

P2 Badge Correct routed-only ordering with account selectors

With one or more Codex account selectors, this is not how the routed-only path sorts: buildCatalogEntriesFromObservedState puts an unlisted unfeatured routed row at 1005, while a listed row is rewritten to 1000 + index * selectorCount (so at least the first listed row precedes the unlisted rows). If native account rows leave a spawn_agent slot open, following this advice can therefore advertise a listed model first—the opposite of the documented control; qualify it to catalogs without account selectors and update the locale copies.

P2 Badge Do not imply every new session reloads the catalog

When an already-running Codex App/app-server predates the roster's catalog write, starting a new session on that process does not reload the catalog: src/codex/app-server-processes.ts treats it as stale precisely because it retains an in-memory copy. The new session can therefore continue advertising the old roster; limit this promise to sessions launched by a fresh process or tell users to reload/restart the Codex surface, and mirror the correction to the locale copies.
