Summary

This PR addresses two compatibility issues when proxying models through Vercel AI Gateway and other non-standard OpenAI chat endpoints:

  1. Vercel AI Gateway /decisions and Laya routing compatibility for JEV:

    • Detects ai-gateway.vercel.sh endpoints and automatically routes decision requests to /decisions instead of /systemone. Custom *.vercel.sh endpoints continue using the standard format.
    • Normalizes decision candidate discovery to recognize laya decision models.
    • Updates parseJevDecision to accept array-formatted answers ([{ name: "route", value: ... }] or choice) and array-formatted probabilities ([{ value: ..., probability: ... }]) alongside standard object formats, rejecting malformed probability items.
    • Formats the outbound JEV question payload with input (including bounded task, recent assistant, and tool-output context) and choice structures (value and description with route explanation and candidate profile note) expected by Vercel /decisions.
    • Supports up to 255 choices for Decisions endpoints while preserving the 2..26 limit for self-hosted System One endpoints.
  2. Thinking model reasoning replay for reflection/stealth models:

    • Resolves HTTP 400 (Missing required parameter: 'messages[N].reasoning_content') when using thinking models (such as reflection/beam or stealth) on multi-turn conversations without tools.
    • In planNativeChatReasoningReplay and messagesToChatFormat, generates reasoning placeholders for thinking models requiring full-history reasoning replay even when hasTools is false.
    • Accurately accounts for serialized byte limits in planNativeChatReasoningReplay when replaying message.reasoning.
    • In nativeChatReasoningCapture, captures both reasoning_content and reasoning deltas/messages.

Verification

  • bun run structure:check passes cleanly (all manifest-mapped docs within 600 line SSOT limits).
  • bun run typecheck passes cleanly with 0 TypeScript errors.
  • bun test tests/ci-workflows/repo-hygiene.test.ts passes (16/16).
  • bun test tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts passes (25/25).
  • bun test tests/responses/chat-native-reasoning-scope.test.ts tests/routing/jev-decision.test.ts tests/routing/jev-service-exchange.test.ts tests/providers/deepseek-reasoning-replay.test.ts all pass (131 pass, 0 fail).
  • Documented contracts, verification date (2026-10-23), and distinguished vendor acceptance from test fixtures across structure/providers/jev-decision.md, structure/providers/chat-compat.md, structure/transports/byte-accounting.md, structure/data-planes/inbound-compat.md, and docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/combos.md.
  • Tested live multi-turn chat continuation on reflection/beam and JEV routing via convaiinnovations/laya against Vercel AI Gateway.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Reasoning replay supports additional thinking-model families, including reflection and stealth models, even when no tool calls are present.
    • Decision routing supports Vercel Decisions endpoints, up to 255 options, and richer task and conversation context.
    • Decision responses accept additional formats for selected choices and probability distributions.
    • Model discovery recognizes additional model names when no query is provided.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Captured reasoning from streamed and standard chat responses is retained more consistently during replay.
    • Malformed probability distributions are rejected, and serialized request size limits are enforced consistently.
    • Decision endpoint URLs are normalized more reliably for supported hosts.

Walkthrough

The changes extend native reasoning capture and replay for additional model families and reasoning fields. They also add JEV support for Decisions endpoint recognition, request construction, and response parsing.

Changes: Reasoning Capture and Replay

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reasoning capture and family policy
src/adapters/openai-chat/reasoning-replay.ts, src/server/chat-native-reasoning.ts, tests/responses/chat-native-reasoning-scope.test.ts
Model-family checks and replay policy now cover DeepSeek, reflection, and stealth models. Native reasoning capture uses nonempty reasoning_content or falls back to nonempty reasoning.
Replay planning, placeholders, and size checks
src/adapters/openai-chat/reasoning-replay.ts, src/adapters/openai-chat/messages.ts, src/adapters/openai-chat/passthrough.ts, tests/responses/chat-native-reasoning-scope.test.ts
Replay planning uses nonempty reasoning directly and permits reflection-family turns without tools. The message path can add a reasoning placeholder for an eligible reflection model. Request-size measurement also runs when replay makes no changes. Tests cover replay, buffer accounting, and captured reasoning.

JEV Decisions Endpoint Routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Endpoint recognition and discovery
src/combos/jev-decision-contract.ts, src/server/management/decision-discovery.ts, tests/routing/jev-service-exchange.test.ts
Gateway URLs are normalized to Decisions paths and recognized as Decisions endpoints. Model discovery also accepts IDs containing laya.
Decisions request construction
src/combos/jev-service-exchange.ts, src/combos/jev.ts, tests/routing/jev-decision.test.ts, tests/routing/jev-service-exchange.test.ts
Request preparation includes the endpoint URL for Decisions endpoints. Those endpoints receive a questions structure with target and effort choices, task text or serialized state, and quota-bounded option counts.
Decision response parsing
src/combos/jev.ts, tests/routing/jev-decision.test.ts
The parser accepts object-shaped answers and array-form answers, and normalizes choice and probability values. Existing distribution checks remain in place.

src/combos/jev-decision-contract.ts:42
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Restrict the URL rewrite to the exact gateway hostname.

If a configured endpoint is https://my-ai-gateway.vercel.sh/v1/systemone, the substring check rewrites it to /v1/decisions. isDecisionsEndpoint correctly classifies that custom host as a legacy endpoint, so the request sends the legacy body to the rewritten path. Parse the URL and compare hostname with ai-gateway.vercel.sh before rewriting it.

As per coding guidelines, “Preserve existing public exports and configuration compatibility unless the task explicitly changes them.” Based on learnings, trusted-domain checks must use a parsed, exact hostname instead of a substring.

🟡 Minor · Reject probability entries without a route value. · jev.ts:596-603

src/combos/jev.ts:596-603
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject probability entries without a route value.

A Decisions probability item must contain value and probability. The array normalizer currently skips entries without a string choice or value. A complete valid distribution plus such an entry therefore passes the later checks. The parser then applies the selected route instead of rejecting the malformed response and using the fallback.

Suggested fix

       probabilities = {};
       for (const item of answer.probabilities) {

The current b279de0 head addresses my mapped-documentation and citable-contract requests, including optional builder URL, local 2-choice policy and explicitly scoped Reflection/Stealth fallback evidence. Withdrawing this specific objection; this is not approval, readiness, vendor acceptance or CI success.

Re-reviewed b279de0d6871c38f8eb1f2eb40dc4206f4bdb77e. The optional canonical builder URL, citable Vercel Decisions reference, upstream 1..255 versus local 2-choice minimum, and observed-model versus family fallback policy are now documented. I verified that all eight changed runtime-source blobs are byte-identical to dbc326fe74, which already passed my independent 135 tests / 640 assertions; that passing workload was not repeated for documentation-only follow-up.

I have formally dismissed both of my outstanding change requests (5625240232 and 5642139879), and confirmed their REST states as DISMISSED. I approved the existing exact-head Cross-platform CI 40196805545 and Catalog async contracts 40196805549 after checking the full diff and unchanged workflow/install surfaces. Approval to run those workflows is not a CI pass or a merge approval.

Keep Draft until the author completes exact-head readiness and the required checks succeed. No live vendor request or Codex Security scan was performed.

That defeated the empty-turn drop, and one call became two, with an invented result. The guard now skips the placeholder inside an unfinished tool batch. Reflection and Stealth regressions were added; they fail on b279de0d6 (2 fail) and pass with the fix. The combos guide now scopes Decisions formatting and the 255-option ceiling to ai-gateway.vercel.sh, matching isDecisionsEndpoint. 78036cae2 merges dev in; there was no rebase.
  • Required CI on the exact head (fork workflows approved after diff review): Cross-platform CI 40276411890, Catalog async contracts 40276411923, Enforce PR target branch 40276411777, PR hygiene 40276411936, all success. Not Windows-sensitive: no Windows path or marker in the diff.
  • Independent reviews (separate agent): round 1 was MUSTFIX with 1 blocking finding, fixed as above. Round 2 on 78036cae2 passed with 0 blocking findings: the duplicate-call reproduction is gone, the other placeholder cases (tool calls, thinking-only, standalone empty, DeepSeek, MiniMax opt-out) are unchanged, and the docs match the code. No security-boundary change.
  • CodeRabbit's outside-diff note on passthrough.ts:172 (unmeasured unchanged bodies) was raised on an older commit. At this head the base body is measured against maxSerializedBytes unconditionally, so it no longer applies.
  • Maintainer recheck on this head merged onto origin/dev 3b4e04ae1: bun test --isolate across 75 openai-chat, required-tool, reasoning-replay, JEV and decision files, plus the file-size ratchet and layout guard: 1322 pass / 0 fail (pinned Bun 1.4.4). Typecheck exit 0. An earlier combined run against 2971af856 (with feat(combos): add opt-in cooldown recovery with configurable interval #7723's combo cooldown) passed 89 JEV/combo files, 1617 / 0. origin/dev is now 2d8463aa8; its only new commit (fix(usage): retain Kiro prompt estimates in hosted tool paths (carry #7620) #7744, sidecar usage) touches none of these files, and the merge stays clean.
  • NOT RUN: live Vercel / Reflection / Stealth provider requests; full local suite.

Landing as a squash merge.
