Summary

  • Invalidate an existing desktop compatibility trial when a usage record explicitly names another account, user, or plan, or when a fresh activation identity check fails. Previously the individual response or activation was rejected, but the old trial could remain active for a later matching response.
  • Clear the old trial's observations and outputs. Correction can resume only after another matching exhaustion observation and explicit activation. A delayed verification result from an older binding or generation cannot invalidate a newer trial.
  • Keep the existing final identity/generation/deadline checks. This change adds no dependency, UI, transport, build-admission rule, or certificate operation; it does not establish native client cache refresh behavior.

Verification

  • Initial production patch edf4f22642fc037ab113aaf78fb07ae16030f4cd, Bun 1.4.3 on Windows: bun test tests/clients/desktop-compatibility-native-identity.test.ts passed 20 cases (155 assertions); the unchanged source had 11 failures. Removing the stale-generation guard made its three new cases fail; restoring it passed all three. A separate focused controller selection passed 15 cases (102 assertions). TypeScript, structure ownership, privacy, and diff checks passed at that revision.
  • Current HEAD 815ec561a28d78aa051b815af549471e19f60126 adds only the bound-stream regression assertions requested in review; production code is unchanged. The stream is registered before the valid rewrite, with one validated SSE stream before a foreign identity and zero afterward. Removing only the foreign-record exclude() call caused all three SSE identity cases to fail (expected 0, got 1); restoring it passed all 20 file tests (167 assertions). TypeScript and diff checks passed for this test-only follow-up.
  • bun scripts/test.ts --changed=83af6f92f5f7f49f0296518aaca1ab2a1d50c102 selected 380 of 2,580 files and failed at its 900-second limit. Observed errors included Windows ACL inspection, EBUSY cleanup, spend-owner conflicts, and individual timeouts; output was truncated, and a complete failure total is unavailable. These failures have not been established as baseline-only or attributed to this patch. The command was not rerun.
  • Historical Ubuntu CI run 39889462325 passed for source HEAD edf4f22642fc037ab113aaf78fb07ae16030f4cd. Its actual checkout was refs/pull/7582/merge at 76ab4fd59abad7c95d2a388d9c26596c3a14c2ce, with base parent a9963bfc34e8861de185678934ff27d04684eabf and source parent edf4f22642fc037ab113aaf78fb07ae16030f4cd. All four Ubuntu test shards, gates (including Typecheck), structure, storage policy, Docker smoke, and the final CI aggregate succeeded. This is prior-revision evidence, not a CI pass for the current HEAD.
  • Current-head Ubuntu CI run 39896262028 passed for 815ec561a28d78aa051b815af549471e19f60126. Checkout logs identify refs/pull/7582/merge at d871ca4818407dbff71167d4c7afa619d2199310; its actual base parent is c51b0b4c875469548e70219a1be276a2395490d2 and source parent is the current HEAD. The PR API's base SHA is a9963bfc34e8861de185678934ff27d04684eabf, which is distinct from that tested merge parent. All four Ubuntu test shards, gates (including Typecheck), structure, storage policy, Docker smoke, npm-global/keyring/API-usage checks, and the final CI aggregate succeeded. The two production blobs and strengthened test blob in that merge match the source HEAD. Windows/macOS suite jobs and the privacy gate were conditionally skipped; this run does not establish a Windows full-suite pass.
  • The focused regressions exercise JSON/SSE account/user/plan mismatches, failed reauthentication, pending-response cancellation, stale verification results, and fresh-observation/consent requirements. They represent the two changed trial-state transitions; the new assertions additionally prove bound-stream exclusion. The documented focused-validation exception is used after the 900-second Windows changed-run failure. The focused results and Ubuntu results are not a Windows full-suite pass or a replacement PASS for that failed changed run.
  • Real desktop cache invalidation and native certificate/runtime lifecycle behavior remain unverified. No live service, account, certificate, or configuration was changed. The bound-stream review finding is addressed in the current HEAD; the review thread is resolved.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Usage records with explicit account, user, or plan details that don’t match the active account now invalidate the current trial and block further output until consent is activated again.
    • Failed fresh identity checks now invalidate the current trial. Checks tied to an outdated trial no longer affect a newer one, and pending responses are canceled when identity changes.

📝 Walkthrough

Usage records with explicit foreign identity values now invalidate the active trial. Failed fresh activation checks also invalidate the current trial. Binding and generation checks prevent stale verification results from invalidating a newer trial.

Changes: Trial identity invalidation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Usage record identity checks
src/codex/desktop-compatibility/usage-controller.ts, tests/clients/desktop-compatibility-native-identity.test.ts
When a usage record contains a nonempty account, user, or plan value that differs from the expected identity, the controller invalidates identity, excludes the stream, and returns null. Tests cover foreign identity values on usage and stream routes, reactivation, and cancellation of a response awaiting its final context check.
Activation verification and stale-result guards
src/codex/desktop-compatibility/usage-activation.ts, tests/clients/desktop-compatibility-native-identity.test.ts, structure/clients/codex-desktop.md
A failed fresh identity check invalidates the current trial when its binding and generation have not changed. Tests cover verification failures, pending responses, and stale activations. The documentation describes trial behavior and notes that native cache refresh remains unconfirmed.

Reviewed the complete diff at 815ec561a28d78aa051b815af549471e19f60126. The four-file diff invalidates only the current trial on explicit foreign identity or failed fresh verification. The binding/generation check precedes invalidation, so an older asynchronous result cannot revoke a newer trial; invalidation also fences a response waiting for its final check. The owning document states that another matched observation and explicit activation are required.

Independent capped Linux/Bun 1.4.3 with fresh private homes: bun test tests/clients/desktop-compatibility-native-identity.test.ts — 20 pass / 0 fail / 167 assertions. Current-head hosted CI 39896262028, including the gates/Typecheck step, succeeded. The current review-thread snapshot has no unresolved findings or standing maintainer objection.

The full local suite/typecheck were not repeated on the shared capped host; the completed hosted Ubuntu run supplies broader validation. Approval is bound to this source head and diff, and does not certify a later dev union, native platforms or live provider/client behavior. All external sends in the focused behavior fixtures were stubbed; no real account, runtime configuration, service or OS trust state was changed.

This approves the narrow consent-revocation correction, not activation of a trial, entitlement changes or the other product/policy units in #7587.
